Billikenbooster
Quote My buddies and I get together every three weeks to drink beer at different establishments around town. We rate each place on the FART scale....food, ambience, refreshments and ......(referring to our ratings of the server's Txxts). I guess an acronym, eh? Regardless of the number of letters, "Txxts" was supposed to stand for [a euphemism for what women breastfeed with]. I've made some posts some people take umbrage with -- but not necessarily any more than others -- but how does that make me any different from anyone else or mean I have "a history of problematic posts"? If it's true of me, then it's true of you and many others, also.

That doesn't necessarily make them right (or wrong), but just what I believe.

I don't have a problem with the word "retarded" when it is used properly. There is no proper use for the term tard, ever.

So why is it okay to call someone a nerd but not okay to say, "'tard"? When I was in school, my contemporaries would use the word, "retarded," as generically as "Smurf" (yeah, I grew up in the '70s and '80s!), but weren't really using it to denigrate people with developmental disabilities. A couple of generations later would say "that's gay" even when they weren't talking about same-sex relations. I don't agree that moderators should be held to a higher standard. Moderators get to have opinions just like non-moderators. And you don't have to agree with the moderators' opinions.

Calling people a 'tard' as an insult implies that you think someone who has retarded mental development or similar developmental disabilities is some how less human than others. You aren't really putting the person you called that term down, but you are exposing how you really feel about a whole group of other people. This stuff isn't that difficult. I honestly don't have the energy to explain why calling someone a nerd is different than 'tard (retarded/retard). If you're using it as an insult to somebody or something: that's retarded!, you're a retard!, that's gay!, you're gay! then that's equating tard/gay with something that's bad. You're an educated adult, get a thesaurus.

You aren't really putting the person you called that term down, but you are exposing how you really feel about a whole group of other people. This stuff isn't that difficult. This has snowballed into an avalanche! This will be my last comment on this sub-sub-topic. I have never insulted a person with a developmental disability, and I don't recall using the term "retarded" when I was a youth — I concede it's possible though, to try to fit in with my peers — but, as I said, its usage wasn't really connected any person's intellectual ability or functioning. I never said it was, is, or should be permissible to use the term to attempt to offend someone. Mostly it was the youth of the day doing the stupid stuff youth have been doing for millennia and will probably continue to do for centuries to come. It was in the context of that immature usage — not as a shot to anyone with a developmental condition — that I said, "It's better to be a nerd than a 'tard." I apologize to anyone who finds the term offensive; I wasn't intending for anyone to interpret it as an accusation of anyone or to belittle anyone who has any developmental disability. I certainly do not harbor any uncivil attitudes towards people who live with such or who care for them. When I was "teaching" at Wellston as a Jobs for Missouri Graduates job specialist, I took my students — paying out of my own pocket — to a Cardinals game (first season in Busch III) for Career Day. While we were at the perimeter of the stadium, we saw a young man in a wheelchair (I don't know the name of his condition — maybe severe cerebral palsy), and one of my students, who himself appears to be at least somewhat learning disabled, just busted out laughing, pointing at, and ridiculing the guy. I was astonished at the behavior! I wanted to slap the mess out of him, but I refrained (I had to!). I admonished him (my student), but he didn't respect me and I had no way to drive home the educational point to him. During my years working in schools, I worked around many young people served by the Special School District. I never treated any of them as if they were less than human, and I don't think anyone would accuse me of that if you asked them. Nor have I ever directed a derogatory term towards any of them or spoken of any person with a developmental disability using a derogatory term. My use of the term in an earlier post was not intended to do so, either. It was more in jest, in response to be called a nerd. I assumed that was in jest, as well. The thing about jokes is that, unless it's something like a pun, unless it pokes fun at someone or some group, offends someone, or makes someone uncomfortable, it's hardly even a joke. Perhaps that's wrong, and perhaps I'm wrong; again, I'm sorry. But — and this is the last thing — if you're going to bristle at "retard," then you shouldn't be using the derogatory term nerd, because it's offensive to those who are intelligent but socially awkward.
