Class Record Watch - 2017-2018

This is Goodwin's first full year playing point guard and he's already one of the school's best passers in the last 30 years. I suspected he was capable of this with athletes around him but I wasn't sure. I am shocked by his poor shooting. Half of his shots come from inside the paint. I understand that he was adjusting to his specs early on but that close to the rim it doesn't matter that much. I speak from experience.

Even if Goodwin shot as well from the perimeter as he did in high school, that wouldn't be good enough to get him to the league early. At his best he was a 30% 3pt shooter at Althoff. He's starting from a much lower point in college. But he's so good at so many other parts of the game. Sit back and enjoy all the records he's going to break the next four years.

21 games in, so we're about 2/3 through the season (31 scheduled games, 32 minimum with the A10 Tournament). I now have to include the disclaimer that this assumes Goodwin plays a full season, as we don't yet know the outcome. Trust me, this isn't any easier for me to write than it is for you to read. So I'll lead with a quick fun fact if you don't want to read the rest: As of today, Goodwin has the exact same scoring and rebounding averages as Roland Gray his freshman season (11.5 and 7.6). So he's basically Roland Gray, if Gray were also a point guard and led the team in assists and steals. Again, I'm GUTTED to consider the fact that he might not play this season out, but here we are.

-Jordan Goodwin's 11.5 points per game would tie Roland Gray for 7th in freshman scoring average, bumping Cody Ellis, and he'll be solidly in the mix for total points, currently looking to finish anywhere from about 3rd through 7th, with a chance to reach Monroe Douglas' 406 points (Larry Hughes is comfortably holding first at 670 points and 20.9 PPG). If his average holds, he'd be tied for 2nd in rebounding average (with Roland Gray, at 7.6). He's already 8th in total rebounds, bumping Yarbrough from the list, and he's on pace to beat Roland Gray for 2nd. He's already tied for 4th in total assists with Josh Fisher with 89, and he's on pace to beat Kwamain Mitchell's all-time lead of 113. He's going to be very close to first in steals, too - Hughes had 69 and he's tied with Jordair Jett in 2nd, with 44. He's got 11 blocks, and he needs 20 to crack the list so that one's possible but unlikely.

-Hasahn French is third on the freshman blocks list, with 39 on the season, and he's about to pass Willie Reed, who is second at 40. He should best Melvin Robinson's all-time record of 51. French is currently on pace for #6 in rebounding average (one lower, if Goodwin bests him, which is likely), and would be about #5 in total rebounding (same caveat re: Goodwin), with an outside chance to climb into the top 5 if he can top 196 (Willie Becton; Johnnie Parker is 6th, with 180). If his current percentage held, he'd be just outside the top 10 in FG percentage with .490, needing .495 to tie Dwayne Evans.

-Jalen Johnson's 3-point percentage continues to slide, leaving him outside the sophomore top 10 (.360 is 10th, he's at .347). But he's still on pace to crack the total 3-pointers list, with 26 and needing 39. With 14 blocks, he's also on pace to be in the middle of the top 10 all-time for sophomores.

-Javon Bess' scoring needs to pick up significantly for him to crack the top 10 lists (Bonner is 10th at 15.5 and Bess sits at 13.1 currently, while Kevin Lisch's 453 points are a little out of reach unless he picks it up. He should be close to the steals list, which is a tight bunch - 44 would tie him for 10th, and 49 would put him alone at 5th. He's got 27, so he's got a chance, but needs to get back on his early-season pace to crack it.

-D.J. Foreman would be the all-time leader in FG percentage for juniors, currently at .648 (Tom Frericks is currently tops on the list at .574). It's weird to have the inside track on a #1 spot on one list and have no shot at any other lists, but that's looking like the most likely outcome for him.

-Davell Roby is now in the mix for three pointers made, currently at 36; Cobbin is 10th on the senior list, with 52. At .387, he's now outside the top 10 for the 3-point percentage list (John Duff is 10th at .401), but he's been streaky and could end up on either side of that threshold.

-Aaron Hines, Rashed Anthony, and Markos Psimitis are currently not on pace to come within reach of any class records.

Adding to your recap Pistol, Roby moved to 30th on the Career Scoring List last night, jumping over Bob Cole.  He is also now 18th on the Career Minutes played list, bypassing Cobbin.

Average Minutes Played in a Career is based on a minimum of 40 games.  So none of this season's players will make that Career List.

Foreman will make the Single Season FG% list, for all players.  At his current 64.8%, that would be the best single season EVER by any Billiken.  He is 9 FG attempts short of being eligible for the record.

Goodwin is 8 steals short of making the Single Season top 10 list.

24 games in, so we're about 3/4 through the season (31 scheduled games, 32 minimum with the A10 Tournament). I reiterate the disclaimer that this assumes Goodwin plays a full season, as we don't yet know the outcome.

-Jordan Goodwin's 10.9 points per game would just barely squeak him into 10th on the all-time freshman scoring average list, bumping Cody Ellis, and he's in the hunt for total points, needing 321 to tie Lisch and Yarbrough at the end. If his average holds, he'd be 3rd in rebounding average. He's already 7th in total rebounds, and he could be as high as 2nd (currently Roland Gray). He's already 3rd in total assists with 98, and he's on pace to beat Kwamain Mitchell's all-time lead of 113. He's going to be very close to first in steals, too - Hughes had 69 and he's currently 2nd with 51. He's got 15 blocks, and he needs 20 to crack the list so that'll be close, too.

-Hasahn French is now alone in second on the freshman blocks list with 43 on the season, passing Willie Reed (40). He should reach Melvin Robinson's all-time record of 51. French is currently on pace for #5 in rebounding average (one lower, if Goodwin bests him, which is likely). He's already in the top 10 in rebounding with 160 - he and Goodwin have bumped Winfield and Yarbrough - and is on pace to be as high as 3rd in total rebounding. If his current percentage holds, he'd be 9th in FG percentage with .509, bumping Dwayne Evans (.495).

-Jalen Johnson's 3-point percentage has bounced back into the sophomore top 10 (.360 is 10th, he's at .382, which would put him 6th). He's close to the total 3-pointers list, with 34 and needing 39. With 15 blocks, he needs three more to tie Evans and Bonner for 10th. His FT percentage is .785, which would tie him for 9th with Miles Reynolds.

-Javon Bess' scoring needs to pick up significantly for him to crack the top 10 lists (Bonner is 10th at 15.5 and Bess sits at 13.2 currently, while Kevin Lisch's 453 points are a little out of reach unless he picks it up. He should be close to the steals list, which is a tight bunch - 44 would tie him for 10th, and 49 would put him alone at 5th. He's got 31, so he's got a chance, but needs to get back on his early-season pace to crack it. He could also have an outside shot at total rebounds (236 for 10th) if he increases his pace there, currently with 161.

-D.J. Foreman would easily be the all-time leader in FG percentage for juniors, currently at .628 (Tom Frericks is currently tops on the list at .574). It's weird to have the inside track on a #1 spot on one list and have no shot at any other lists, but that's looking like the most likely outcome for him.

-Davell Roby is in the mix for three pointers made, currently at 40; Cobbin is 10th on the senior list, with 52. At .360, he's outside the top 10 for the 3-point percentage list (John Duff is 10th at .401), but he's been streaky and could end up getting there if he gets hot again. He continues to climb the all-time scoring and minutes lists, as well.

-Aaron Hines, Rashed Anthony, and Markos Psimitis are currently not on pace to come within reach of any class records.

French has cracked the list of top 10 All Class Season Blocks sitting at 9th.  Al Matim is 8th with 44 and again 7th with 46.

Goodwin is tied with Jett for 11th on top 10 All Class Season Steals.  His next steal will tie him with Burns and Dillard for a 9th place tie.

As Pistol reported, Bess possibly won't make the list for any Junior Class Records.  However, he is currently 7th on Average Minutes Played in one Season, All Classes 35.46 mpg.  Bonner's 38.1 mpg record is not attainable, but Perry's 2nd place of 36.2 mpg is possible. On the other end of the list, J Luck, Dobbs and Liddell are all tied for 10th with 35.0 mpg.  Bess should also make the Total Minutes Played, All Classes.  With a minimum of 8 games left, an average of 32 minutes per game would put him in the Top 10.  Goodwin has a lesser shot at both lists, but he is still in play for Top Ten on both lists.

Roby is sitting in 8th with Career 3's made, and tied with Rob Loe for 8th with 3's Attempted.

This number is insane for a whole season. There are players who get used a ton during certain stretches of a season, but for the whole ride? Man, that's something we're probably not going to see again.

Not only getting used a ton, but also avoiding foul trouble that would limit minutes.  As you said, insane.

Pistol I want to thank you for the research and posts on records and recruits.  I love reading your posts, especially in this year with S2. Hanging over our heads.

Thanks! I liked digging into the records starting during the Crews era, as a way to distract me from the massive setback we were experiencing. I planned on doing this thread again this year and didn't expect it to have the same purpose - a distraction - again, but by the time the season started, that's what it was for me yet again.

@HoosierPal is doing a ton of work on the record books, giving Brian Kunderman assistance where needed. The online archive has already had some updates and fixes, but by the time we head into next season, the SLU record books will be in great shape.

I've been trying not to overdo the updates here, but with 2 more games played and some milestones reached, not to mention a week between games, I figured it makes sense this week. 26 games in now, so we're in the home stretch. (31 scheduled games, 32 minimum with the A10 Tournament). I reiterate the disclaimer that the below assumes Goodwin plays a full season, as we don't yet know the outcome.

-Jordan Goodwin's 11.5 points per game would put him tied with Roland Gray at 7th on the all-time freshman scoring average list, bumping Cody Ellis, and he's getting close to the total points list, now at 300 and needing 321 to tie Lisch and Yarbrough at the end. Willie Becton is at 3rd, with 376, and that's certainly within reach. If his rebounding average holds, he'd be 3rd on the freshman rebounding average list, just behind Gray's 7.6. He's already 6th in total rebounds (195), just behind Becton's 196, and he should get to 2nd (currently Roland Gray, 228). He's already 3rd in total assists with 103, and he's on pace to beat Kwamain Mitchell's all-time lead of 113 in the next few games. He's going to be very close to first in steals, too - Hughes had 69 and he's currently 2nd with 52. 52 also ties him at 10th on the all-class season steals total. He's got 16 blocks, and he needs 20 to tie Loe in 10th, so that'll be close, too.

-Hasahn French is now tied with Melvin Robinson for first on the freshman blocks list, with 51 on the season. They're tied at 6th on the all-class season blocks record. He is currently on pace for #5 in freshman rebounding average (one lower, if Goodwin bests him, which is likely). He's already in the top 10 in rebounding with 174 - he and Goodwin have bumped Winfield and Yarbrough - and is on pace to be as high as 3rd in total rebounding. If his current percentage holds, he'd be 9th in FG percentage with .517, bumping Dwayne Evans (.495).

-Jalen Johnson's 3-point percentage has bounced back into the sophomore top 10 (.360 is 10th, he's at .375, which would put him 8th). He's close to the total 3-pointers list, with 36 and needing 39. With 15 blocks, he needs three more to tie Evans and Bonner for 10th. His FT percentage is .776, which would put him in 10th, bumping Harry Rogers.

He's got 32, so he's got a chance, but needs to get back on his early-season pace to crack it. He could also have an outside shot at total rebounds (236 for 10th) if he increases his pace there or if we go on a postseason run, currently with 187.

-D.J. Foreman would easily be the all-time leader in FG percentage for juniors, currently at .630 (Tom Frericks is currently tops on the list at .574). This would also be good for 3rd all-time in single-season FG%. It's weird to have the inside track on a #1 spot on one list and have no shot at any other lists, but that's looking like the most likely outcome for him.

-Davell Roby is in the mix for three pointers made, currently at 42; Cobbin is 10th on the senior list, with 52. At .353, he's outside the top 10 for the 3-point percentage list (John Duff is 10th at .401), but he's been streaky and could end up getting there if he gets hot again. He continues to climb the all-time scoring and minutes lists, as well.

-Aaron Hines, Rashed Anthony, and Markos Psimitis are currently not on pace to come within reach of any class records.

Adding to Pistol's always detailed recap, here is where our players stand on Career and Single Season (All Classes) Lists.

French his tied with Big Chill for 6th on Single Season Blocks.  He has Ian Vouyoukas in his sights twice, with 55 blocks in 05-06 and 57 blocks in 06-07.  Willie's single season 73 is out there, but French will have to average 3+ blocks per game to reach #1.

Goodwin has tied for 9th with David Burns 80-81 season and Q Dillard's 90-91 season of 52 steals.  To hit Waldman's record 74 steals in 94-95, we are looking at 3+ per game.

Foreman has slipped 0.002 behind Big Chill's 89-90 season for 3rd on the FG% list.  Big Chill's record of 0.646 would take a few perfect nights.  DJ is signficantly clear of Skinner's 4th place of 0.616.

Bess is currently 7th on minutes per game. There are 7 players who averaged in the 35 minute bracket, so Bess moves up or down each game. Javon will end up in the top 10 in minutes played in one season, and depending on how many A10 tourney games plus foul trouble, could top Roland Gray's 2nd place total of 1199.  A longer run would put Bonner's record of 1246 minutes in sight.

For Career numbers, Roby is up to 26th in scoring, 8th in 3's made, 8th in 3's attempted, 14th in minutes played, and tied for 20th with games played.

This team has to be on pace to rank pretty high in block shots as a team.

Willie's record year (2009-2010), when he had 73 blocks as a sophomore, the team registered 169 blocks, a school record. The year before that, when he had 44 blocks as a freshman, the team only had 80.

I could find block totals going back to 1986. The lowest number the team had was 33, which it did twice, in 1993-1994 and 1994-1995. Those were Tournament teams, which is crazy. The highest number is 169, followed by 142 (2006-2007) and 138 (2013-2014).

The team currently has 118 blocks, which is the fifth most team blocks all time for SLU. Next number to beat is 126 (1999-2000). SLU has had 100 or more blocks in 11 seasons.

The current pace is 145, assuming they lose in the first round of the A10 Tournament and don't play beyond that. That number would be good for second all-time. If they go on an A10 run and/or play in a postseason tournament, they could challenge that 169 record, but it would take a solid run or a handful of team effort block parties down the stretch.

Pistol, there are two more years on the Men's BB website, 81-82 with 73 blocks and 82-83 with 71.  Then there are several years between 83 and 86 with no data.  (Brian is working on this.)

I am also watching total and average rebounds.  I started my tracking in 90-91, and this year's 37.2 rpg would tie the mark of the 1990-91team. The total record in these 28 seasons is 1226, both in 90-91 and 13-14.  We would need 2 or 3 A10 tourney games to best that record.

Hate to do this so early, but it's the wrap-up post for Jordan Goodwin. Here's where he ends up on the freshman class lists (pending French's final rebounding numbers):

-Total Points: He needed 321 to tie Kevin Lisch and Milik Yarbrough for 10th, so he's going to come up short. He had 300. Probably just needed two more games. Mike McCall was 8th at 323, so with two more normal games, he could've been 8th.

-Total 3-Pointers: He needed 37 and he ended with 19, so this one was probably not ever in play.

-Scoring Average: Tied for 7th with Roland Gray at 11.5 points per game. If he had a few more nights like he did against La Salle, he might have been able to catch Leartha Scott in 6th (12.4).

-Total Rebounds: Currently 6th, with 195. But he's going to be passed in 3-4 games by Hasahn French, so he'll end up 7th. Together, they bump Julian Winfield (9th, 156) and Yarbrough (10th, 154) from the list.

-Rebound Average: Currently 3rd, at 7.5 per game. Gray is in second, at 7.6. He could hang on to this spot, but French (7.0) has an outside shot of catching up so we can't call it final yet.

-Blocked Shots: Because French already bumped Liddell off the list, Goodwin would've needed to post 20 blocks to catch Rob Loe. He had 16, so it would've been close.

-Field Goal Percentage, Free Throw Percentage, 3-Point Field Goal Percentage: Never in play, especially given his ice cold start to the season. I'd like to think the first one will be in play going forward because he gets to the rim. But his outside shooting might keep him away from that, given his overall volume. We'll see.

-Assists: With 103 on the season, he will finish 3rd, behind Kwamain Mitchell (113) and Kevin Williams (108).

-Steals: He will fall short of Hughes' record of 69, but his 52 steals are still good for 2nd. He is tied for 9th on the all-class season stills list.

He registered the first triple-double in SLU history and came close to doing it more than once.

His season is over immediately after having hit his career high in points (28).

All in all, he's now on 5 freshman top-10 lists without having played a full season, and would have definitely been on 6 and possibly 7 had he finished.

The only other players to be on 5 freshman top-10 lists are Roland Gray (who is on 6), Anthony Bonner, Scott Highmark, Larry Hughes, Kwamain Mitchell, and Mike McCall (who was also on 6 but has since been bumped from Steals). Good company.

Expect a BIG sophomore season from this young man.

Pistol, I don't like ties when the data is there to break a tie.  Gray's freshman scoring average was 11.47 ppg.  Goodwin ends with 11.54 ppg.  I know they will be listed in the Records as tied at 11.5 ppg, but it ain't so.

Yeah, it's unfortunate, but they're only going to round off one decimal place, so hopefully they put Goodwin first, then Gray when listing them.

French should easily shatter the career blocked shot list. Goodwin will have a decent shot at both the career steals and assists marks.

French is currently 6th on the Single Season block list.  He will catch Ian Vouyoukos, who had 55 in 05-06 for 5th, and 57 in 06-07 for 4th.  Big Chill has the third best season with 66 in 90-91.  Ian is the career blocks leader with 135 which is easily attainable in 2 or 3 years by French.  Of course both Willie and Robinson didn't stay four years, or the record would be much higher.
