Kevin Lisch Update

Looks like Kevin and his team are off to a great start at 3-0 this year. He's averaging a little over 24ppg and playing his usual tough defense.

Anyone know what any of the other past Billikens are up to that are still playing?

It wouldn't hurt the program if someone like KLisch or Claggett came back as an assistant at some point.

when torch told us a couple of weeks ago how much we were going to like the new asst coach (prior to crews being named) i thought for sure that meant a former billiken star was going to be named. what a disappointment when it was mini-rickma instead.

Vouyoukas had a good first game in the Greek league. Here is a list of 9 former SLU players playing in leagues that have started their 2011-12 season (some players might be playing in South American leagues who may not start until 2012). Interestingly, Fergerson, Fischer, and Heinrich play as "citizens" of their respective league countries.

I believe Luke Meyer is still starting for the Bendigo Braves in AU. They just finished up their season (21-5) about a month ago, losing in the SEABL championship game. Averaged 18.4 PPG and 5.3 RPG this year in 30 games. Excuse me, matches.

Fisher married a Spanish woman and citizenship was always part of the plan for him. Interesting about Fergerson and Heinrich, though. Maybe German citizenship wasn't too hard for Heinrich, given the last name and that he's from Pennsylvania Dutch country- might not be too far removed from the old country.

Danny Brown was playing in Mexico up through last season and also played in a tournament in Paris this year- not sure if he will be playing anywhere this time around, though. He and Drejaj each got married in the past couple months, as well.

Apparently Ian Vouyioukas grew 4" after leaving SLU. Imagine that.

What kind of proven recruiter could we have gotten right before the season started? Based on the comments made by Majerus it seems pretty clear that this is a one-year stopgap.

Even you have expressed admiration for RM's Xs and Os ability, and RM has expressed great respect for Crews' knowledge, so that should count for something.

that's one year that could be used to teach an up and comer young coach about the ins and outs of recruiting. making network connections, etc.

if not a former billiken player, tony young or some other former college player looking to get into the college scene.

if they arent working out after a year then steal an existing college assistant next year. no worse off than we will be now if crews is a one and done deal.

there is absolutely nothing about crews that we need. everything he could bring to the table is covered by both majerus and whitesell.

Roy:

I'm absolutely amazed it took you so long to post your feelings on the Jim Crews hire.

What young, (i.e., not over the hill) hip, flashy and top flight recruiting specialists would have been available, especially several days prior to the opening practice? Are you able to name any? Do you even know if any fitting your profile expressed interest?

Crews had a remarkable run at Evansville; some might say he was more successful there than UB was @ SLU. He must have recruited some sort of talent to make Evansville that successful.

Yes, Crews has the reputation of being demanding on his players; I don't know of many successful D-1 coaches who are not. Maybe you should go show interest in the local east St. Louis metro area Kindergarten sports programs, who have priority of post-game snacks and drinks as opposed to winning at the D-1 level.

I always have wondered if you really believe you own BS or if you just post to stir up trouble but this post confirms what I suspected--you do believe your own BS and you know absolutely nothing about college basketball. First of all, every decent assistant who has potential as a recruiter ALREADY HAS A JOB!!! Second, Al Jensen had a very important role on this staff as a teacher and person who worked individually with players. He will be missed but we were very fortunate to get someone who can be an additional teacher and can work with our still very young team. We needed both Al and Whitesell along with our other coaches. Crews was nice to help out under a very tough situation for the staff. By the way, who do you know who is not a tough guy when it comes to coaching major D1 basketball. Coach K is known as a very tough guy in practice, as is Bill Self, as is Calhoun, as is Calipari, as is Roy Williams. They get on their players hard for mistakes and make them prove they can play on the team. This is another example of your constant whining when the school does not do exactly what you want. You are only a fan on your own terms.

I heard Crews like everyone else but also a couple different names as well in the mix. They apparently weren't even given an interview so no need to mention them now.

I'm okay with Crews on a short term basis. Many national pundits have applauded the hiring. Crews is not a long term solution though. Majerus could have gone another direction looking towards the future but he decided to put things on hold till the end of the season. It makes great success this season that much more important.

Are you suggesting that we fire someone if it doesn't work out? Then you suggest replacing them with someone better. Wow! Interesting read when it comes from the puppy dogs and ice cream king. Quite contrary to your previous ideas (don't tell me it's different when they are the players).

Face it you would have found a reason to be disappointed with whoever was hired. Landing a guy like Crews on short notice was tremendous.

I am not a Jim Crews fan and you can count me in the group harboring that opinion HOWEVER given the timing of the Jensrn piracy, there was not a lot of options at our feet. So withthat in mind, getting Crews as we did is okay by me.

But Crews himself said (I believe) that he committed to one year and on eyear only. I am okay with that as well and would expect that when he is replaced, the right, long-term move gets made. Now, what that is I don't know but i think it will go as a harbinger as to Rick's long-term intentions as well.

I still believe Majerus will ride these next two years into his coaching sunset. IMHO with nothing to support said opinion other than my gut.

No I'm suggesting that's par for the course when rickma's concerned.

and your comments are par for the course as far as you are concerned.

By the way, non Billiken roy, Lindenwood has it's season tickets for sale. Why don't you buy one, and revisit the glory days with BS. Oh , I forgot, he hired 60 year old coach Terry Hollander to be his assistant coach.

Come on Billikan. There is being a hard a$$ coach like some of the ones you mentioned and then there is Jim Crews. Crews got fired from West Point for being abusive to players. Let me repeat that.........Friggin West Point thought Jim Crews was too tough on his players.

Why don't you show me the link to the most recent time I supported soderberg. Considering. You knew about the hollander thing (I didn't and I laugh at that) it appears you care more about soderberg than I do.
