Billikenbooster
Rammer might be on now with Frank at midday....there is a God! Someone called, asking about who the Bills picked up to replace the Stemler spot. Rammer went on about how happy the Bills are with HD, a great athlete. How Obi may be the man there, but his conditioning may be suspect due to his knee. Said the key to the year again is DP's ability to regain his shot from the outside, so that the defenses have to pay attention to him. If he cannot hit the open jumper, it may still be a rought year, depending on whether DB progressed (the DB comment was mine) Good to hear Billiken talk at lunch. mhg
billiken_roy
what kind of fan (without an agenda) is even calling in september and asking that question?
Billikenbooster
He just wanted to know if the spot was filled. I bet only us hard core crazies knew about HD. The PDisgrace surely didn't give it a big splash or build up. I don't have any problem about the question. I'm just tickled to get the SLU name out there in a positive light...it's spring training time folks, we never miss FTs, everyone is fit and excited, and we're going dancin'! Let's come back in 3 months and see how excited we are about everyone. Notable is the fact that BR did NOT mention one word of JJ in that entire discussion. mhg
crymdg2
Are you saying that Rammer is going to leave Slaten's show and be on with Frank now, or was it a one time spot appearance for Ramsey? Ramsey/Frank show is sure to get some Billiken talk I would say.
billiken_roy
watch out booster with that appropriate rip of the post. phan will be attacking. your point is well taken though. you are correct. any billiken discussion is good. and having ramsey and frank together will be awesome for us. StLouBlue
Rammer & Frank are together now and Slaten is on his own. Monday is the first day of this.
Iggy
I think that will work out better for both shows. Slaten doesn't need a sidekick and Rammer & Frank should work well together. Here come the Billikens!!!

kevinfootes
There is SLU discussion on the radio during the beginning of football season and in the middle of the pennant stretch. You somehow find the negative in anything that is ever said about SLU. Maybe you should e-mail the program director and tell him that all SLU calls should be screened by you. Geez, why isn't that a fair question? I guess you're bummed out that Pravda has faded away.
Billiphan
>phan? pffffp! reasonable people ignore him. > >mhg I guess you, Roy, Rich and Skippy aren't reasonable. That sounds about right.

So if any Billiken discussion is good, why are you questioning why someone would be calling a talk show and asking about the Bills in the first place? According to you, it had to be someone with an "agenda." Footes is right, I guess the media should run everything by you before they do anything. Hypocrite Roy is at it again! tseugnekillib
While I think Frankie and the Rammer will have more in-depth Billiken conversations with their mid-day show.....I also think Slaten will have less talk about the Billikens without Ramsey at his side forcing the issue. Botton line....a better conversation, but less overall minutes about SLU basketball.
thetorch
Anybody hear the mizzou fan who called in? He was complaining how at some event two of his cousins (SLU students) were actively rooting against Mizzou. Then he goes how SLU has such an inferiority complex, but also states he roots for Mizzou over SLU but does go to a handful of SLU games. Good stuff from the Boone county morons. davidnark
The success of the season depends upon DP's shot? Am I missing something here? Is anyone really counting on Polk for more than 10-15 minutes per game off the bench? I would argue that the success of this year's team depends upon the continued good health of Tommie, Kevin, and Ian. The second biggest success factor would probably be getting quality minutes out of one of the power forward candidates. DP's shot would rank near the bottom of my success factors. Heck, Dwayne may struggle to find minutes this season with at least three other quality basketball players challenging for the same spots on the court. Billikenbooster
I see some validity to his statement. Maybe not DP, but some other option, whether DB, DP or Maguire, to be able to hit from the outside. If Polk is making his shots, he is better on the floor and defensively than the others. A contributing Polk creates match up problems for other teams, while a repeat of last year means he is just the defensive specialist who comes in to cause havoc while TL or KL are resting. As for the 4 position, I'll wait and see what we have. Two freshman, a redshirt frosh with a bum knee and a fifth year senior who hasn't lost the 'deer in the headlights' tag....geez, I don't know which one to pick. You would think someone would come up big, but it may just be no one of the four. I'll wait and see. Your point is fair, but which is more important...I guess I vote for a productive four as well. This will be a very competitive camp, and one which will generate much discussion for the group....I can't wait, David. mhg
slu72
Have to agree w/Nark here. The season doesn't come down to DP's finding his missing shot. No doubt that would be a plus, but finding a competitive 4 to take pressure off IV is the most important issue with this team. I still think the 3 guards are going to be KL, TL, and LM. I'd like to see DB make that next leap forward, but until he proves it on the floor, he's going to be the 6th man.
Taj79
... to finding both, the closer you get to a much better season. We need another shooter (or two) and we need development in the four with expected continued success and more development from what we had. Without another viable out-court option, the dependence on Lisch grows. A dreaded sophomore slump would be killer. Opening up and making them from outside frees Ian up more. Development at the four allows for even more room to both shoot and space for Ian because even if the dump down gets doubled, a closer option that is viable makes that next pass easier and the shot presumable shorter than an out-court shot. A double jeopardy on the inside should allow for even more looks on the outside as well. We need both to develop for a greater success potential this year as well as to lay a foundation for years to come. The three new fours are intriguing, to say the least. The only newbie on the outside is Maguire. I like that there are more options on the inside and expect that to be our development point .. coupled with this being Ian's last year. Winning at SLU has been hard enough; and I don't recall ever winning "easy." But more options would make excruciating seasons like last year and the year prior less regualr occurences. I don't think there is one answer for this team ... to be truly successful, the three returnees must improve over last year, another out-court option must develop, and one of the three fours has to show that this positioned is answered not only now, but in the three years down the road as well. Wouldn't that all be nice?!?!
cheeseman
Kevin had a very good summer session in Europe so there is no reason to believe he will have a Soph slump. That being said, if he has a fall off it will be because the defense is keying on him more than last year so the development of another outside shot will be important to making sure he does not get blanketed. I do agree that in a perfect world, we need another shooter to occasionally step up at appropriate times - no need to score 20pts just be consistent enough to keep the defense honest and that is not asking too much. Also, if a pf or a pf by committee could surface that would help take some defensive pressure off Ian that would be perfect. The pf setup does not have to be a beast just get a few rebounds and a put back or short shot in periodically. I think that one or both of these things could easily happen since nobody has to be come a star just serviceable.
brianstl
I think DP shot is a huge key. If DP can hit it will allow them to play the more up-tempo style that everyone on here seems to want them to play. He is clearly the best option for this style of play. Luke and Dustin are not the best suited for this style play. DP is a much better athelete, defender, ball distirbutor, and ball handler than Maquire and Meyer. He is a better ball handler and a better defender than DB. Having him on the floor will also allow Tommie to do alot more on the offensive end. He and Tommie both can run the offense. He can set-up Tommie. DP's play will be the difference from this team being a bubble team and being a clear choice for the tournament. I think it is funny how after one bad year everyone is ready to throw DP under the bus. Everyone should remember that the rise in the level of play from year two to year three is historically huge. I think we can look forward for good things from DP, LM, and DB.
slufanskip
First ... Of course if DP can turn his shot around it is a big key ... but the biggest key is the play at the 4. DP hasn't just had one poor season shooting the ball. He's played 2 seasons of college ball and shot poorly both of them. I'm a big DP fan and have been in his corner since day 1, but the fact is the better options as the 3rd guard come from LM and DB. DP will have his role and be a contributor, possibly a big contributor if he can find his shot to go along with the rest of his game. billiken_roy
polk being a better defender than meyer or brown is probably subject to the player he would be guarding. for example, if he is forced into guarding a bigger stronger guard, that quickness will likely be nullified by the size strength advantage of his man and brown or meyer would be better matchups. on the other hand, just the thought of anyone on the team but polk guarding lavender makes me a little ill. that third guard/wing will rotate based on our opponent is my bet. brianstl
I tell you all right now, Polk is the coaching staff's first option for the third guard spot. That said, if he shoots the ball like he did last year he will find himself stuggling for minutes.
3star_recruit
I'm rooting hard for Polk. Having a productive 4 can make us a tournament team but a Polk revival could do that AND transform the very nature of the offense, making SLU a lot more attractive to up-tempo players in the future. And the vast majority of today's top players prefer to play up-tempo.
