How many scholarships do we have? And how do they divide them. Does anyone get a full? How does our higher tuition hurt versus a state school? Thanks

Women get 14 scholarships. Men get 9.9 scholarships. Yes, some players get full tuition room and board scholarships. Many get a combination of athletic, academic, grants, financial need based $ as well. Some of the elite academic/athletic schools have strong financial assistance programs.

Youth club soccer also has financial tiers in terms of costs and assistance.

Recruiting is often a negotiation back and forth to work out the financials.

SLU specifically targets players knowing which financial tiers, even within the same playing position, they will allocate for each player. Example: SLU Women’s Soccer lost a player last year because the offer, while strong, was not a full ride. A similar level, non-Power 5 soccer school, did offer the full ride. SLU was offered a chance to match but didn’t. Example: A SLU Men’s Soccer commit turned down a much better $ offer at a comparable soccer program to go to SLU. It all depends.

For elite level recruiting targets, it’s less of a factor. SLU knows it has to have a very strong offer to even be in the recruiting mix for those players. It’s also less of a factor with players who are filling the last spots on the team. Those players have less options at SLU’s program level. Where it is more often a factor, are players in the middle.

-I didn't know there's a difference in the number of scholarships between the soccer teams, guessing Title 9 driven, are basketball scholarships the same for women and men?

13 for men's and 15 for women's in basketball.

Hate to clutter up a soccer thread with actual soccer discussion but has NIL made an appearance at all, with elite level programs?

Some, but not like basketball of football, a lot of it is more in line with what NIL is supposed to be, advertising promoting a product.  Earlier this year, for example, Chris May said in an interview that one of our women’s soccer players had her picture on a billboard in Union, MO promoting a bank I think. There was also an article I read about some North Carolina women’s field hockey player who was getting a ton of money, but it was all from manufacturers of field hockey equipment getting her to promote their gear.

I've seen either Emily Groark or Abbie Miller promoting liquid IV on Instagram. You'll see a lot more of those influencer deals ie free product for promotional posts on social media.

Good luck to Tyson Pearce who is off of the board. As expected, he signed a homegrown signing with St. Louis City SC. 2026 Holding midfielder, that can play elsewhere. U17 St. Louis City Academy player, U16 National Team pool player this past year. He’s a top 30 player nationally in his age group, and he is now a former SLU recruiting target.

4-0 SLU

Rough in-game notes:

Starters Buredia Almonal (goalie) Diego Grady Max Johnson Seth Vrobel Mads Flynn Redmon

Shaky early on. Guys not in sync. Not connecting passes.  Kalish up off bench, barking at front line early.  Finally make a nice offensive move down right side, squares pass across goal but goalie cut it out.

Flynn growing on me. Good hustle, good size, enough skill to be a nice addition on right wing.

Goal ...Seth. Mads picked up ball at 30 and drove at 18, laid Seth in, onetime ping off near post.

Vrobel playing well as target fwd, using size well and connecting with middies.

Second Anderson goal….after Flynn got whacked at 18, ball came back to him, then played Seth and he one timed it. Slight deflection on shot as well.

Coppola and Leatherman in 22 min in. Leatherman at right mid....very, very dynamic.

Buendia. Gamer. Gets ball, passes ball. Shows for ball.

Tanner and Sully on for Seth and Mads. 30 min Mika on for Johnson SLU/UIC: 32 7/2 shots. 6/2 ck

Second half: Starters same except Leatherman on for Redmon and CJ up top for Vrobel. Mason in goal now

20min…Mads grabs ball at half line. Plays Seth in  who beats two defenders, goalie comes rushing out and he dinks over goalie at full speed and drifting right.

Subs. 24 min…Komodo, Sully, Mika, Ukraine kid, Tanner. Immediately grab goal  with CK goal header near post flick to far post. Max F scored it.

Rest of game was a bit ugly as Kalish subs out starters and put in guys for playing time.  Definitely could tell a drop off in play.

While it was great to see all the students in the stands, could we please find something besides vuvuzela’s to give them as free giveaways?

Probably still left over from the initial order 13 years ago 😂.

I know they are divisive and I would be annoyed if I was sitting next to one, but one game out of the year 60 yards away from me. I can live with that. As long as the kids are having fun and making noise I’m happy. Except for ole dudes voice at halftime. Jesus Christ, somebody get that kid a Ricola.

Flynn is an outside back that is playing some wing. Dougherty is a center back playing some wing. Carlos may play there, as we discussed before,  He is an outside back/holding mid at the MLS Next pro level. But he may play some wing at SLU where there is more of a need.  He is the one player that as we discussed, was a homegrown signing possibility at MUNFC.

It took Max a while to go from holding mid to center back to outside back. So  the preference is to keep him there.

Preseason rankings are largely based on the previous season. SLU finished 28th in CSN poll last year.

It’s similar with other polls too. Even the United Soccer Coaches Players to Watch List are previous season’s All Americans, and, First and Second Team All Region players.

So, much of the preseason stuff is often more marketing tool than any type of predictive measure.

There are a few more analytics based places out there that will have more variation.

SLU has a new 2024 commitment from Xavier Holloway.

Xavier is an outside back and holding midfielder, who recently signed an amateur USL Academy Contract with North Carolina FC at age 16.

A 5 year NCFC Academy player, Xavier has been a U16 USYNT invitee, as well as a U17 ECNL National Conference Cup participant where he was named to the best 11 team in Chula Vista, CA.

Xavier was selected to play in the ECNL National Selection game in Virginia. He is an ECNL First Team All Mid-Atlantic Conference player.

He tackles well in space, frequently gets forward on the wing, and he controls distribution in the midfield.
