JohnnyJumpUp
I hope they call it the "Pure Catholic League." I know Sister Amie down at the convent agrees I asked her "what you gonna do" if this conference shakeup happens? They could call it Pure Catholic League (PCL) and add a rule that only 1 non-catholic schools are allowed. Similar to the Black American Softball Association (BASA) having a rule that limits the number of non-black players per roster to 3.......
davidnark
Good money says SLU is "in" regardless of the final size. The media reports whatever shiny object is in front of them (in this case current rankings and NCAA tourney results), but SLU has more to bring the conference in the long-term than nearly all of these programs, including Xavier. I would guess that if Xavier is target 1, then SLU is target 1b.
ACE
Yeah, right. You are a mind reader, people say things 100 times and you know they really mean something else. He said a lot in 5+ years, what other things did he say that you and all reasonable people know were a ploy? Oops, one minute after my post, kshoe posted something similar to what I said regarding Majerus, the Valley and Charter fligthts. You know what they say about great minds! Oh, but I'm sure you will dismiss it as some kind of socialist plot.

Only way Butler and Creighton make it is if it goes to 12.These things matter to the priests that are the university presidents.
IndyDawg
Two independent sources have indicated that Xavier and Butler are the targets. Everyone else comes after. There is no confusion over who is getting invites, only how big. If its 9, its over. http://zagsblog.com/articles/big-priest-schools-cut-ties-with-big-east/ http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/12/13/report-butler-and-xavier-to-join-the-catholic-7/

JohnnyJumpUp
The Catholic thing was never the central theme to this thing, but people are going record on it already anyway. From yesterday.... @Aaron_Bracy Villanova AD Nicastro says new conference will not be limited to Catholic schools. #philahoops #bigeast #catholic7 ----Butler and Xavier, then a third is evidently the most likely. But 12 is still possible, as is staying with 9. Agreed
AMDG
What does Butler bring other than Brad Stevens? It has a large market but one that is dominated by other programs. It spends way less on athletics than any of the other schools. I see Butler staying in a non-Catholic A-10 with VCU.

A pretty decent market. A commitment to the program (e.g. Stevens' contract extension). That should be more than enough.

Now that Butler has moved to 19 in this week's poll, that means every year since 05/06, barring last season, they've been in the Top 25. That along with playing for a 5th Sweet 16 in a decade this year, having the winningest coach in D1 history over 5+ years, and averaging >22 wins per year for 20 years probably contributes. Butler is in, why else would ADs and HCs be saying the common link will be basketball not religion? Because a non-catholic team, Butler, will be included in the New conference. Butler and Xavier are LOCKS.
brianstl
I think it is clear that the members of the BE7 don't agree yet in the direction the new conference wants to go. At a minimum some members want an all Catholic conference. According to people actually willing to put their name with their statements, this whole thing started with Notre Dame over a year ago looking at forming a nationwide all Catholic conference. Cowboy
Neilson television markets (BE7 and others being considered) 1. NY 3. Chicago 4. Philadelphia 9. DC 21. St. Louis 25. Indianapolis 34. Cincinnati 35. Milwaukee 52. Providence 64. Dayton 76. Omaha There is no way they add Creighton over SLU when St. Louis becomes they're fifth largest tv market. -if there was only one criteria, I agree, there is more than one criteria I would expect

JohnnyJumpUp
HCs and ADs won't be making the ultimate decisions. That may be correct but they have a good idea of what is going on and what decisions are going to be made. You think they are saying these things by accident? Sounds like a done deal to me. Don't forget, according to the tweet on Saturday from the guy in Peoria, Creighton is also a done deal. I have a twitter account too. Maybe I could tweet Timmerman or BWeix that it is a done deal SLU is in, get a retweet from one of them and then a retweet from Jeff Goodman and CBS Sports. Then it would be all over the twitterverse.
