    15 games in, we're close to the mid-season mark (31 scheduled games, 32 minimum with the A10 Tournament).
    -Hasahn French has really slowed his blocks pace in the past few games. He now stands at 27 blocks, still stuck at 8th on the all-time freshman blocks list. Darryl Anderson is the next guy to pass; he's 7th, with 31. Then there's a logjam at 32, with four players at that number, and Reed is second at 40. So it'll be a few more games, but he should be 3rd very soon and he still has a good chance to best Melvin Robinson's all-time record of 51. French is currently on pace for #7 in rebounding average, and would be about #6 in total rebounding, with an outside chance to climb into the top 5 if he can top 196 (Willie Becton; Johnnie Parker is 6th, with 180 and French is halfway there through 15 games). If his current percentage held, he'd be outside the top 10 on FG percentage (.475, needing .495). He's also got a chance to crack the top 10 in steals, but needs to pick up the pace a bit to get there.
    -Jordan Goodwin has picked up the pace with his scoring, and his 11.8 PPG would put him at 7th on freshman scoring average, and he'll be solidly in the mix for total points, currently looking to finish anywhere from about 3rd through 7th, with a chance to reach Monroe Douglas' 406 points (Larry Hughes is comfortably holding first at 670 points and 20.9 PPG). If averages hold, he'd be 5th in rebounding average and in the mix for 2nd-6th in total rebounds. Since his scoring has picked up, his assists have dropped; he was on pace most of the season to comfortably top Kwamain Mitchell's 113, but now at 3.5 per game, he's going to finish closer to Kevin Williams' second place spot (108). He's going to be very close to first in steals - Hughes had 69 and he's on pace for the low 70s. He's got 5 blocks, and he needs 20 to crack the list so that one's looking like a long shot now.
    -Jalen Johnson's 3-point percentage remains a little outside the sophomore top 10 (.360 is 10th, he's at .349). But he's still on pace to be as high as 7th on the total 3-pointers list, with a chance to be a spot or two higher. With 11 blocks, he's also on pace to be 5th-7th all-time for sophomores.
    -Javon Bess' scoring has dipped in the past couple weeks, so he'd miss the junior scoring average and total points lists (Lisch is 10th at 14.6 and Bess sits at 13.3 currently, while Bob Ferry's 447 points are a little out of reach unless he picks it up a bit). He should be close to the steals list, which is a tight bunch - 44 would tie him for 10th, and 49 would put him alone at 5th. He's got 20, so he'd just miss at this pace. We remarked in the GDT last night that his FT shooting has fallen off, so he's now well out of range for that and the other shooting percentage lists.
    -D.J. Foreman would be the all-time leader in FG percentage for juniors, currently at .581 (Tom Frericks is currently tops on the list at .574). However, you need at least 100 attempts to make the list, and he's not going to hit 100 if he doesn't get out of the doghouse and play more minutes. He's got 43 attempts, which would put him in the low 90s for the season. Foreman has the unusual split of being .581 from the field and .381 from the line.
    -Davell Roby has a chance at three-pointers made (currently 24), but he's either going to have to pick up the pace slightly or make sure we get above 32 games played in order to exceed Cobbin's 52, currently 10th on the senior list. At .400, he's also now threatening to make the 3-point percentage list, which has John Duff 10th at .401.
    -Aaron Hines, Rashed Anthony, and Markos Psimitis are currently not on pace to come within reach of any class records. If Rashed Anthony played more minutes, he'd have a shot at making the senior blocks list; he's got 10 despite playing under 10 MPG, and he'd need 27 blocks to tie for 10th. But that looks like a longshot at this point.

    As Coach K says after Duke messes up....next game.
    Which is.....Davidson...a solid B rated team.  We remain as a C rated team which is a full letter grade above last year (and the last 3 years) So while some think we suck this year ....we are better....just below expectations.
    Davidson is  better than us on offense (who isn't) and we are better than them on defense.
    Here is what the report card looks like.....
    ..................Stl..........off........Dav..........................................Stl..................def................Dav
    PPG...........F- ........................B- ............................................B+.......................................C-
    FG%...........F+.........................C+...........................................B-........................................D-
    3P%............F...........................B..............................................D- ........................................D
    FT%.............D-.........................A.............................................................................................
    Reb..............D+.........................F..............................................B.........................................C-
    Top Performers in the nation
    Goodwin.....Stls.....27th
    French..........Blks....50th
    Aldridge.........PPG....31st
    Gudmundsson...Asst..50th
    Bottomline...It is no secret our shooting has been terrible ...here is the target for this and future games....44/35/ 71...Why these numbers? ...because this is what a C team shoots like. Combined with our Def,  we would win most of the rest of the games this season.  We need to stop Aldridge ...he is their go to guy...hold him to 15.  This is another good FT shooting team....We need to at least equal them on FTM....which probably means we need more shots than them. Also at least equal them on TOs. But unless we make the slash line none of this matters. ...at least make the layups and the bunnies.
    I think I will end with a post I just made in the S2 thread.  This was in response to Metz asking what did it mean to beat Va Tech...the #1 shooting team in the nation in both in FG% and 3P%...................
    What it says to me is....We have faced the best offense in the nation and beat them....there is no excuse to lose to lesser or crappy teams. Overall VT is an A team....They are 11-2....half of all their losses are to us. They are a potential sweet 16 team. If we played the entire A-10 season like we did against VT we would have 1 loss  in conference and it wouldn't have been  to LaS.  We need to fire up and start playing some bball. Forget about all this S2 stuff.  Just do it

    Bottom line, Giannini's 7 out hustled, out played and out classed our 8.  Blame whomever you want to.  You can blame Ford, you can blame Hines, you can blame the other 7 not named Hines, you can blame Crews, you can blame Pestello, you can blame the 3 who couldn't keep their pants zipped, you can blame Richard Nixon who signed Title IX, you can blame Guy Phillips.  Pass the blame around.  Make excuses.
    This team wasn't ready to play and layed the biggest egg in recent history.

    Certainly a question mark.  This team isn't ready to play CYC ball.

    Ouch.
    I know I am in the minority, the VAST minority, but Welmer is #1 on my list of MIA.  We can certainly use more shooters, but we have Roby and Johnson.  The missing shooters are no better or no worse.  You can always use more ball handlers, but we have Goodwin and Bishop.  What we don't have is a decent backup for French (and Johnson) that can play inside and outside.
    Just my opinion, and I'm not looking for anyone to agree.
  7. HoosierPal liked a post in a topic by The Wiz in A Visit From The Wiz...A Billiken Xmas Story
    'Twas the night before Christmas when all thro' the Fetz
    Not a creature was stirring, not even a Metz
    The banners were hung from the rafters with care,
    In hopes that The Wiz would soon be there;
    The fans were nestled all snug in their seats;
    With visions of Bills wins, while they munched on their treats.
    And Mama in her 'kerchief, and I in my Bills cap
    Had just settled in for a win streak without a gap-
    When on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
    I sprang from my seat to see what was the matter.
    Away to the window I flew like a flash
    Tore open the shutters, and threw up the sash.
    The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow,
    Gave the luster of mid-day to objects below;
    When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,,
    But a basketball team as quick as reindeer,
    With a little old driver, so lively and all biz,
    I knew in a moment it must be The Wiz.
    More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
    And he whistled and shouted and call'd them by name:
    Now! Johnson, now! Goodwin, now! Bess, oh my lord,
    On! French, on! Hines, on! Roby, and Ford;
    To the top of Gate A ! To the top of the wall !
    " Now dash away ! Dash away ! Dash away all !"
    As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
    When  they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;
    So up to the arena top the coursers they flew,
    With a bus load of stats and The Wiz too:
    And then in a twinkling I heard on the floor
    The bouncing of b-balls making baskets galore.
    As I drew in  my head, and was turning around,
    Down Section 103 The Wiz came with a bound:
    He was dress'd all in Bills gear, from his head to his toe,
    And his clothes were all blue, he was ready to go;
    A bundle of spreads was flung on his back,
    And he look'd like a peddler just opening his pack:
    His eyes- how they twinkled ! His dimples: how merry,
    His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry;
    His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
    And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
    The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
    And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
    He had a broad face, and a little round belly
    That shook when he laugh'd, like a bowl full of jelly:
    He was chubby and plump,  a right jolly old elf,
    And I laugh'd when I saw him in spite of myself;
    A wink of his eye and a twist of his head
    Soon gave me to know that The Wiz had a spread.
    He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
    And calculated point spreads, ; then turn'd with a jerk,
    And laying his finger aside of his nose
    And giving a nod, up the concourse he rose.
    He sprung in the Chaifetz , to his team gave a whistle,
    And away they all flew like the down of a thistle:
    But I heard him exclaim, ere he shouted out clear--
    Happy Christmas to all, it will be better next year.
    To all that follow the Billiken Biz
    Merry Christmas to all , best wishes from The Wiz

    I have certainly benefited from the tax deduction on SLU Athletic donations in the past, but this was one of the worst loopholes in the old tax code and I'm glad its gone. In no way shape or form should donations to big-time D1 athletics be tax deductible and the fact schools would make such donations a requirement for seat purchases is abusive. While SLU did this on a small scale, try buying football season tickets to an LSU game without making a significant tax deductible donation.

    Read the second half of this Phil Mushnick, NY Post's article about Martin buying teenagers.
    https://nypost.com/2017/12/02/complacent-media-give-broken-sports-world-a-pass/
    'In April, Missouri signed the nation’s No. 1 high school recruit, 6-foot-10 swingman Michael Porter Jr. He was injured in the season’s first game — he’s likely out for the season following back surgery — but he’s still considered NBA-bound, as early as next season.
    Why Missouri? Funny you should ask.
    The school hired his father as an assistant coach. And unless Porter Sr. is working for free, how can any logical human — or shrub — not conclude Missouri paid off Senior to deliver Junior?
    Any college president with an active sense of fundamental right from wrong would have told Missouri coach Cuonzo Martin, “Oh, no you don’t. We don’t buy teenagers.”
    You think this would pass muster in Missouri Law School’s ethics classes? Then again, the academician who enabled the North Carolina no-show-classes scandal was fully enabled by a professor of ethics.

    The problem with this game was the title to the thread, flooding beavers?  They live for floods, and control flooding.  Maybe we should have focused on trapping them?

    In my opinion Bonner is the greatest Billiken of all time.  He scored 360 points (10.3 ppg), 337 boards, (9.6 rpg), hit at a FG rate of 59%, and had 32 steals as a freshman.  He also lead the team in blocks with 18. He played with Douglass and Gray, two other great Billikens.

    Well you may be right, but those three don't have any improvement over Johnson and Roby, in particular.  For the 8 games, Johnson is 40% this season and Roby 37%.  Past full season for Henriquez was 36%, Bishop was 37% and Welmer was 37%.  So they are right there with what we already have.  If you want to start whacking minutes off of poor three point shooters, you know who is last on the list at 9%, followed by Hines at 21% and Bess at 27%.  Not as easy an answer as you may think.

    Fun fact: We're raving about French's performance and he tied his season low in rebounds, with 4 (also had 4 vs. VT).
    He just made big plays when we needed them, played tough defense, and the difference he makes doesn't always show up in the stat sheet. Werewolves gonna werewolf.
