Not sure what to make of that.  Perhaps the MVC teams can't compete financially to hold onto their players as well as the A10 and other higher ranked mid-major conferences that may have more NIL resources.

Regardless of 1.2/2.0, I think this is pretty much an accurate summary of SB’s point at large. We’re lucky Schertz is an awesome person and Avila/Swoope are coming with vs. going P5 for more $.

I'd like to see a comparison of transferring "up & down" in the pre-NIL/free agency era v. today. My sense is that it is benefiting the P6 even more now than it did previously. The gap is growing, IMO.

I just think that it was obvious that he was copying and pasting it.  Plagiarism is when you hold something out as being your own creation even though it was created by someone else.  That is not what he did.
Also, I would think that someone who has been very wrongfully, and comically, accused of plagiarism on this board would be a little bit more sensitive to that word being thrown around and used improperly.

Schertz comments about Casey: "The things that really pop out to me are his athleticism and versatility on booth ends of the floor. He is a true hybrid, which means offensively he can play with a big and also a small ball 5. Defensively, he has the quickness, length, strength and lateral quickness to guard 1-5."
I also saw a report on him coming out of highschool that was projecting him as a stretch 4, though his statistics at Miami don't reflect that.
My own view is that if he requires a Double team to keep him from scoring inside, that opens space on the floor for another player. If Casey can recognize the double team and pass out of it, then he works with Shertz system.
I think Schertz is primarily looking for him to play with Avila. Schertz system is frequently described as 5 out, but his philosophy is really more about having players recognize the spacing of the defense, create spacing problems  and attack them. Ideally every player would be a good 3 point shooter, but the system can be modified to a player that creates spacing problems  in other ways.
With a man to man defence teams will have to decide  which of their bigs they put in Avila and which on Casey. Casey will probably  make Avila a better player.

One of my faves.  Earl summed it up, just a cool dude.
He was the leading scorer on the 1st Floyd Irons Championship at Vashon.  As was the case with many Vashon teams, that group just ran guys off the floor.  That State title team had to forfeit most of their games because Irons let an ineligible player play.  They won that title with nobody over 6 feet 2 and 200 lbs on that squad.
A lot of the Vashon guys would play on this team called the Zips.  They were like a Jr High Globetrotters team that would perform at HS and college games.  Trice played for them and I always remember he could do some real tricks with the ball that I had never seen before.  He could shoot from anywhere as well.  Various things, his knees were always messed up, he was never in shape, he played like a track star but didn't have that real burst anymore.  If he still had that speed he maybe could have been a point guard.  Grawer would dump on him at practice every day.  Guy who made 7-7 3 pointers in a game his Jr year wasn't allowed to shoot outside the paint his Sr year.  Newberry eventually replaced him.  Trice should have been like a Duff or Virgil Cobbin but Grawer pretty much wasted him.  His Sr year team was full of headcases and quitters and he had the worst time of it and played with a smile on his face.

The chance of Josh Schertz being interested in a transfer portal player is first determined by a 15-minute video cut-up created for his viewing by a graduate assistant at St. Louis University.
Those snippets can include the moments in games when a particular player touched the ball, every catch-and-shoot, the drives, the cuts, ball screen defense, rebounding.
They’re short bursts that tell Schertz whether he needs to proceed to watching full games and then a deep dive into that player’s character.
Of more than 100 players he has watched in those videos since being hired at SLU, Schertz estimates he has eliminated 75%.
“I’m a pretty hard grader,” Schertz said. “I spend most of the time I’m not doing a recruiting visit on my phone or computer watching video. My assistants get mad because I’m always, no, no no.”

Should St. Louis taxpayers kick in? Teen charged with breaking into more than 35 cars in St. Louis County   And that’s just the start of the process he has used to rebuild a roster that was decimated by departures. It is not a coincidence that the first 10 players to fill roster spots were known to Schertz or those around him before he arrived at SLU.
A player might look great in video, but will he fit the system? A recruit might consider himself a team player, but how is he viewed by those who play with him? And someone might not appear to bring baggage, but does his inner circle include potential poison?
Most coaches talk about wanting players who fit their culture. Schertz is consumed with the concept.
“You need a unified group so we’re being purposeful about the pieces of the puzzle,” Schertz said. “You’re not acquiring talent, you’re building a team. There’s a big difference. You can get talented players, but if they’re not team oriented and possess the right competitive character — if the inner circle around them isn’t right — you can completely tear away the dynamics of the team. Teams are fragile, and it just takes one or two to be outside the team and it crumbles.”
Josh Schertz meets St. Louis University students after a news conference to introduce him as the school's men's basketball coach on Monday, April 8, 2024 at Chaifetz Arena.
Vanessa Abbitt, Post-Dispatch So far, 10 have passed the eye test, the background check and have wanted to play for SLU. Three spots remain and Schertz continued to watch video as a new batch of players scheduled visits starting late last week.
Schertz runs an offense that revolves around his center, in this case Robbie Avila, while the remaining players on the floor are essentially positionless. So, while he is hard on his grading and research, he considers the field of talent for the offense to be large.
“When you have 10 spots, you need everything. When you have three, it’s much more specific,” Schertz said. “I do think the way we play gives us tremendous bandwidth. Being positionless one through four gives us more variety in what we can do and create rosters with great versatility.”
Schertz started by determining who from last year’s team wanted to stay and fit his prerequisites. He used assistant coach Corey Tate and others to gather information and targeted Gibson Jimerson, Larry Hughes II and Kellen Thames, all of whom will return.
Then sights turned to the Indiana State roster and who among Schertz’s former players might want to join him at SLU. He landed Robbie Avila and Isaiah Swope.
That left eight spots to fill. SLU has signed two incoming freshmen who Schertz was recruiting at Indiana State and knew well. Schertz also had recruited transfer guard Josiah Dotzler at Indiana State and was familiar with his game and family. Transfer AJ Casey was well known by Avila, who played with Casey starting in elementary school. And transfer Kalu Anya received a thumbs-up from assistant Antone Gray, who recruited him at Brown.
Schertz said he still is seeking an impact perimeter player who is strong defensively, a backup to Avila, and a “wildcard” player, who would not necessarily have to contribute next season.
In that search, Schertz remains hyper aware of how the remaining players might impact the team dynamic. A new element in that equation is money in the name, image and likeness era. SLU has lost out on some transfers who were offered more than SLU could at other schools.
“The first question everybody asks is ‘What can I expect to make here?’ Everybody wants to know a range,” Schertz said. “The second is playing time. There are things that tear at team dynamics and now NIL maybe become No. 1 if you let it. Guys are unrealistic about what their value is. One thing that’s been good is I know we have a number of guys that have taken a lot less than they could have made because they wanted to be part of something here. That bodes well.”
As he adds players, Schertz can only hope he finds a player like Jayson Kent, who transferred to Indiana State after two years at Bradley. Schertz’s system allowed Kent to lead the country in points scored on cuts with the help of Avila’s passing.
He has high hopes for Anya, who he sees as a potential double-double performer, and Casey, who he said was in a “terrible system” for his skill set.

Alabama and Clemson were just in the Final 4. I assumed they had so much football NIL $ it was also boosting MBB. 15% is probably more than enough to raid the portal every year

Good, because if past performance is indicative of future results:
    1) It will take Schertz three seasons to achieve success instead of one
    2) Sexual assault and/or immigration/eligibility issues will prevent us from having a full roster at various points
    3) Schertz will immediately leave or die after reaching the NCAA tournament

I see it now. Elite 8 run. Big east comes calling. Schertz signs another extension. All the local car dealerships get into an extreme bidding war to be our official sponsor. The biggest donors pump in further NIL donations. We are a perennial top 15 team.

Well it started in Fairfax, VA  (vb) then to Richmond (ws) on to Myrtle Beach (mbb).  Then it was baseball in Port Charlotte, FL, Millington, TN, Hammond and New Orleans, LA.  On to Edwardsville, IL (wbb).  Now at the A10 Tennis Championships in Orlando.  Amazing complex.   #4 seed men playing in the quarterfinals this morning against Mason.  The ladies play tonight in the semis.   They are the #2 seed and #1 VCU was upset last night.  I don’t think either SLU team has ever made a regional.  That would be really cool.

Welcome Josiah! Best NE player his recruiting class on a very good HS team. I follow Creighton closely (med alum). His family is very involved in serving the Omaha community and brother played there. Surprised he transferred given his ties, but I think he saw playing time limited. They have the best BEast recruiting class/one of the best in the country and will be active in the transfer portal. I think he will fit in just fine here!

According to The Athletics rankings, Avila is 3, Jimerson is 28 and Swope is 31. From what I can tell, they would join Indiana as being the only schools to get 3 players in the top 35 so far.

Big guard with real PG skills.  Can fill it up, is a big time scorer.  Like Kwamain give this kid the keys to the car on day 1.

We need wins - is this a guarantee - no but given our current roster condition and our need to show immediate improvement we should be happy that anybody is willing to invite us to anything.  Lets not get ahead of our skis.

The Tate discourse is kind of dumb because there were hardly any posts about the other assistants upon hire. We just assume they are all fine/good because go Schertz. Same with Tate

I stated elsewhere that hiring Corey Tate was the best decision Coach Ford made during his tenure.  Tate has good relationships with the top local high school players and top juco players in the region.  I'm pleased that Coach Schertz recognized his value and retained him.

Majerus kept Thorpe on staff for the transition. It happens. I think Schertz has given us a sense that he knows what he's doing. If it's good enough for him, LFG. Sign some transfers. Get McCottry. Roll the balls out and let's get to work.
