FYI: -I hope SLU gets into NCAA's and beats Missouri in the first round by 30 points and the MU players all cry like little girls on national TV. -Then I hope we beat Duke in the second round. I think margin of victory should merit some measure of consideration, and it has no bearing on the RPI. Nonetheless, since SLU is better in Pomeroy, Sagarin, and The Wiz, as opposed to RPI this year, then clearly Pomeroy, Sagarin, and The Wiz are better ratings! At least this year, that is. Whatever it takes, whatever it takes. Hmm...what happened to the thread I started. That'll teach me to be away from the board. Well, to get back on topic or at least answer B A Billiken....The margin of victory plays some importance in my system, particularly in the first 9 points. At 9 points the probability goes up to around 90% ...at 11 points about 95% ...at a 20 point margin 98 1/2 %....at 30 points about 99%. So once you get to double figures it doesn't do you much good to run the score up. The weighting at that point will add little to the overall ranking. What really makes a difference is when you do something you are not supposed to do. Two teams both win by 2 points. Team 1 was supposed to win by 2 ...they get a small boost . Team 2 was supposed to lose by 2 ...they get a big boost....even though it is only a 4 point swing. The biggest jump would come from a team picked to lose by 10 and they win by 10. A team picked to win by 10 , wins by 20 ...little effect. This is a simplified version of only one part of the computer system but is my attempt in a general way to explain how margin of victory works in the system I use. Would that help explain how LMU jumped up to a C+ team with their win at BYU? Basically, BYU were huge favorites and LMU won against them? Also, noticed that LMU lost to St. Mary's by 7...how much was St. Mary's favored by? You are correct.... a big boost for LMU (and a help to the Bills) with the win over BYU....I had BYU (an A team at home) by 13 over LMU and LMU won by 14....that boosted LMU to a B-. In tonight's game I had St. Mary's by 7 ...so right on target as St. Mary's wins by 7 ...which means this game will have little effect on either team. It is interesting to note that the St. Mary's game should have been easier for LMU than the BYU game. BYU and St. Mary's are about equal yet LMU beat BYU at BYU and lost to St. Mary's at LMU.
