Pretty strong endorsement from Pitino for his former captain.

This was weird.Â

I thought this graphic was interesting. This shows every Elite 8 team’s  starting lineup by where they began their college careers. 11/40 (28%) of the starters came from mid-major (or lower) programs.
I find it funny that Duke and NC State are exact opposites when it comes to portaling.Â
Also, Bronny James to Duquesne is actually a possibility?! Crazy.

This slots him in as the 59th highest paid college basketball coach. Seems REALLY low for a blue blood-adjacent program.Â

FWIW I think Grawer said on Frank’s Show some big hitters were calling on Ahearn’s behalf. A donor who I know pretty well said that is 100% true, college and nba coaches/players have called Chaifetz, Fred and May endorsing Ahearn. He said biggest knock on him internally is no college coaching experience obviously, however current college coaches, who have won multiple national championships, all said that should not be a concern. Heard some local high school coaches agree with that sentiment as well. So maybe we don’t know enough about the guy other than he’s from Stl and wants the job? Sounds like he’s connected, has an excellent reputation and the recruiting piece won’t be an issue….no matter who we hire it’s a gamble. Ford and Crews had a lot of college experience, that worked out great. DeVries would be my 1st choice. However, I really don’t think you go wrong with DeVries or Ahearn. SLU either gets the big fish hire or biggest risk vs reward guy.Â
ÂÂ
Ahearn would be an interesting hire, for sure. Not among my top choices though.
Why wouldn't all of these pro-Ahearn advocates suggest he first take a job like SIUC to learn the ropes. Coaching a bunch of hero ball dudes in the G-League and NBA doesn't really impress me and doesn't really demonstrate that you can build and maintain a college program.Â

- Indiana St. potentially getting screwed of a bid this year is criminal, but Dayton being a near lock given their resume shows the A10 still gets a certain amount of respect. I'm really not sure why Dayton is a lock, but they are.
Dayton, to their credit, has put on a masterclass in terms of scheduling to the computers this year.Â
NET of 23 (8-7 vs Quads 1 & 2)
KPI of 11
SOR of 25.Â
Ken Pom of 33
BPI of 34
All while not having any 'signature' wins. And they only finished 3rd in the conference as well as got bounced early from the A10 Tourney.Â
This is the blueprint for success in today's college basketball...and it requires us to consistently perform well in conference (13+ wins), take care of business against teams we should in the NonCon, and try to schedule a handful of tough games (even if it's on the road). Sounds deceivingly so simple
This year Dayton had the good fortune of playing LSU, St. Johns, and Houston in their NonCon Tourney.

im really enjoying the Dukes.  they play belly button defense and they play fast. this is fun to watch. this is what Ford should have been developing the last 8 years but never did. Â
Duquesne hasn't made the Tourney since 1977. It would be a good story for the A10 if they were to win.Â

I think it's way too early to panic. Hell it's too early to feel uneasy. I am actually very chill, surprisingly.
It's definitely not panic. We'll see, I guess. I just don't view the pool of viable candidates as being that deep. Sure, there are plenty of coaches to choose from, but as soon as you drop out of that top tier the risk profile goes way up. If we put all of our eggs in the Schertz basket, we could easily end up getting Pantsed.Â
And given the state of college ball, I also don't believe we are operating from as strong a position as we think. It's a problem when we are no longer competitive for/attractive to coaches the caliber of Darian Devries.

It’s been 24 hours, how can it be trending anywhere?
Holtmann to DePaul. Vandy, Oklahoma St, and likely Michigan jobs all opening up. McCollum to Missouri St. Lousville talking to Schertz. No rumors about coaches currently not working (Mack).Â
Oh, and a big one: May is still seemingly in charge.Â
-
Maybe it's my pessimistic attitude towards Billiken basketball, but I'm starting to feel real uneasy about this hire.Â
A week ago I was pretty confident that we would land one of our top targets (Schertz, McCollum, Devries or even a Mack, Moser, Holtmann-type). And we still might. But now, I'm more on the fence.Â
This process appears to be trending towards a desperation hire, especially as the number of attractive jobs increases.
In order to evaluate candidates effectively, expectations need to be set. I think this program needs to achieve 4 outcomes:
1) Aim for 3 NCAA Tournament appearances every 5 years (5 or 6 out of 10)
2) Consistently finish top 4 in A10 play. Given our spend/commitment to basketball and the league's recent downward trajectory, I don't think 4 of 5 years is unreasonable.
3) Make it to the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament. We need some national exposure and credibility. And unfortunately winning the A10 or the A10 Tourney ain't it.
4) Successfully navigate the changing nature of recruiting and talent acquisition (NIL, portal, etc) by building a consistent, strategic, and scalable system.
That asks a lot. But, to me, it's pretty apparent just by looking at a candidate's track record which ones are likely to fall short of these expectations.

Yeah it's an interesting situation. Sounds like Porter is saying no. DeVries and Mack seem like they're shooting higher or waiting for a perfect fit. McCollum is likely off the board. I'm all for getting someone on board ASAP but if things fall apart with Schertz, we need to be patient and not panic on a Tom Crean type move.Â
That's exactly the scenario where we end up with a clown. Patient, thorough, well-informed decision-making aren't exactly among our core competencies.Â
-
I think Schertz would be a great hire. My concern is that there is a nonzero chance Indiana State makes some noise in either the NIT or NCAA Tournament and a Power program enters the picture.Â

He coached really well at DII Lincoln Memorial multiple final fours. He took over Indiana State and led them to regular season MVC Championship, something they haven't done in 23 years, I think.
As for your comparisons using KenPom: ISU SOS 125, SLU SOS 88. ISU KenPom rank 43, SLU 196. OU is 40. ISU offensive efficiency is #23 and effective FG% is #1 in the nation. SLU is 89 and 143. ISU effective defense 96, SLU 340.
Â
So maybe Ford wins a few more games against a slightly easier schedule.
Also Schertz runs a 5 out system that you often see in the NBA. It's the future and the future is here. Would you like to know more?
Watch this video
To add...It's pretty damn hard to win at Indiana State. I know they play more games in this era, but ISU has only won 50+ games over a 2-year span twice in their history, once with Schertz and once with Larry. It's hard to recruit to Terre Haute and their NIL infrastructure is almost non-existent. Success through adversity.
Plus, their top 5 minutes guys are all Sophomores and Juniors. They could be loaded next year.Â
I'd prefer Mack or McCollum personally, but Schertz would still be in my top tier.Â

If a coach's system can succeed without standout athletes, that's a good thing. Expands the pool of players from which he can recruit.
Absolutely. That's certainly not an indictment of Schertz. And Ian was a great Billiken so it's a favorable impression. But Avila has achieved near mythical status, which I think is currently above his pay grade.Â

Watched him briefly today. Not particularly impressed. What did I miss?
I watched him a handful of times this season. But today I saw him in person, and every time he touched the ball I felt like I was in a wax museum. Dude is seriously sloooooow. He definitely has some all around skills, but I wasn't super impressed either. Kinda reminds me of Vouyoukas with better ball handling.Â
Tucker DeVries is a straight up dog. Total gangster. If AJ Green from Northern Iowa made the League, this guy is definitely going to get some playing time.Â

In college sports, when you can't beat your rival, you get fired.
There is no ambiguity here.
Anyone who disagrees can go away. Anyone uncomfortable with this fact (and the conversation around it) should probably take a break for the next few weeks.
It's not just Dayton and VCU though, it's against ANY good team. I did this before the season, and have updated it so far this year.
SLU vs Top 4 A-10 opponents, including the A-10 Conference Tournament (Regular Season record in parentheses):
2016-17: 0-5 (0-5)
2017-18: 1-5 (1-4)
2018-19:Â 4-4 (1-4)
2019-20: 2-2 (2-2)
2020-21: 3-2 (2-1)
2021-22: 3-5 (2-4)
2022-23: 1-5 (1-4)
2023-24: 0-7 (0-7)
TOTAL RECORD: 14-35Â (9-31)
TOTAL RECORD (factoring 16-17 out): 14-30 (9-26)
TOTAL RECORD (factoring 16-17 out, 19-20 COVID out, 20-21 COVID out): 9-26 (5-23)

Did Ford try to fight anyone last night?
-
I'm livid. While I may not be among the largest donor class, I give a decent amount. And I'm not giving a damn penny to the university unless and until May and Ford are gone. The fact that this administration felt that Ford's production warranted that kind of extension is incompetent at worst and irresponsible at best. Why donate to the athletic department if they are THIS poor at managing money?

My fear is that we'd hire someone like Josh Pastner, Ford 2.0.Â
Peeling somebody like Chet Frazier away from Illinois would be interesting.
I also think NBA guys should get a look...Dan Geriot (Cleveland), Ronald Nored (Atlanta), and Chris Quinn (Miami).Â
I really like McCollum or Mack though.Â
