Rob Loe Makes the New Zealand National Team

Recommended Posts

Rob Loe has officially made the New Zealand National Team that will be playing in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Venezuela for one of three remaining spots in the Olympics. Unfortunately, it appears that four of New Zealand's best players are either injured or withdrew from the team. Therefore, I do not expect that the Tall Blacks have a very good chance to qualify. Hopefully, this will give Loe a chance to step up, be the star of the team, and gain some confidence.

Let's hope for an IV levle of improvement. IV came back from the Greece team and was a force for us his JR year. RL's a different style player from IV, but hopefully they'll have him do some heavy lifting on the inside and not just stick him on the perimeter to create mismatches.

"When forward Isaac Fotu withdrew to prepare for his upcoming scholarship at University of Hawaii, coach Nenad Vucinic was left with just 12 candidates for 12 spots and no decisions left to make."

Is this the same kid that visited SLU on an official visit this past fall despite the fact he had already signed with Hawaii but didn't bother to tell anyone at SLU about the signing. He sounds like a real reliable guy to have around...

and I saw from fb, that CE has a chance to still make the team? hes on his way to china with the Aussie team

Timmerman notes that this is an Australian "B" team game exhibition games (well, these days this is the "emerging" team) including against New Zealand. This could lead to more but it is not a spot on the "big boy" boomers.

Congrats and good luck to Rob!

Also, I would love to see Rob and Cody square off against each other in those games.

This is great news all around. Rob will be immersed in an incredible experience playing against big time players in practice and in games. He will get to play in other countries, with games in Brazil against big time teams like Brazil and Greece and then off to Olympic qualifying in Venezuela. Even if they don't get to London this will be a fantastic life experience for Rob and he will come back more mature and seasoned. Cody will get to play and practice with some of the best young players in Australia and he will be tougher and more experienced when he gets back to St. Louis. These experiences will help build their basketball IQ and their all around games.

Better experience than playing in the Bonner league against Femi "does he really have bad knees" John?

Wikipedia shows him as the backup center. I'll see if I can figure out how to copy the roster, which is in table format.

http://www.fiba.com/pages/eng/fc/news/presRele/p/newsid/50506/presReleArti.html

Group A: Greece, Jordan, Puerto Rico

Group B: Lithuania, Nigeria, Venezuela

Group C: Dominican Republic, Korea, Russia

Group D: Angola, F.Y.R. of Macedonia, New Zealand

Top 2 teams from each group go to the quarterfinals. FIBA rankings of these 12 teams:

4. Greece

5. Lithuania

11. Russia

15. Angola

16. Puerto Rico

18. New Zealand

21. Nigeria

22. Venezuela

25. Dominican Republic

28. Jordan

31. Korea

33. Macedonia

So New Zealand got a nice draw with its group. Maybe even with the injury issues, the Tall Blacks can still get out of Group D and pull a few upsets to grab the third place spot. It will probably be Greece and Lithuania in the final and then everybody else chasing the third spot.

Anyone know of a link to watch the games between the Tall Blacks and the Emerging Boomers today and tomorrow? I think they should be great games to watch to gauge RL's and CE's offseason improvement. Unfortunately I didn't see the game listed on firstrowsports.eu
