FromGreeceWithLove
The summer is a slow time for college basketball and it is obvious on this board. The subject of the majority of the posts seem to be bashing other posters. I am a fan of the Morning Grind on 590 and every Friday they do a segment called 5 Questions. I propose we do a 5 questions every week relating to Billiken basketball, short questions with short quick responses. Here are my 5 questions for the week: 1. Are you on board with Coach Soderberg; if not, how long do you give him before giving him the ax? 2. Who is your favorite Billiken player of all-time and your favorite Billiken coach of all-time? 3. Who is your pick to win the starting spot at the 4? 4. What is your prediction for the upcoming season? a. Around a .500 record with an early exit from the A-10 tournament b. Around 18-19 wins and a trip to the NIT c. 20 plus wins, a trip to the Dance, but an early exit. d. 20 plus wins, a trip to the Dance and a run to the Sweet16. 5. Channel 5 anchor Deanne Lane, would ya?

slu72
1.) If this team fails to make post season and fall recruiting is blah, he should be canned after the season. 2.) Bonner/Spoon (he got us to the dance first to do it in a long time) 3.)By seasons end AK, gonna be a round robin affair until then 4.)20 wins NIT(rats) 5.)Don't know but she must be hot. Of cours Billiphan would say I'm too old to care or lost my viagra.
LoveforVouk
1. Soderberg is a good guy and a good coach at times. I think that this is the make or break year. If we don't perform well, then I say he be done. If we can't go to the tourny with Lisch, Liddell, and Vouyoukas plus whoever we decide to play at the 4, then we have no reason to keep coach around. After next year, we have no center so that will be a concern 2. Favorite Billiken would have to be Erwin Clagget. Erwin worked at a basketball camp I attended and he was my coach and I got his autograph. Nice guy and good player. Give me Angres Thorpe as favorite coach of all time. Not a head coach, but still a good coach. 3. Depends on what coach wants. Horace is the athlete, Luke is a battler but undersized, don't know if SLU is getting a jersey for JJ next year, Obi is slow but has a nice shot, and Adam is suppose to also be a battler but not a great shooter. I would say that Horace will start since he's got size and can rebound. Coach loves a rebounder and another athlete on the court always helps plus Ian can't be expected to get every rebound. Coach will sub this position a lot next year depending if he wants the shooter, rebounder, or depender in there, 4. I'll say B. Since we got a weak conference, the tourny pickers won't show us love. 5. Cindy Prezler would be a yes. Give me a six pack and I'm on board with Deanne. billiken_roy
couple of observations first: morning grind is horrible. like walking into a bar sober and trying to grasp the conversation of the three drunk guys at the end of the bar. they are laughing there a$$es off, but you think they look stupid. plus, they rarely talk about sports. i would think sports is necessary at a sports talk station. franks show is the purest sports talk show that also has fun and bernie is second. i'd rather listen to slaten than the morning grind. anyone else think, "HUHHHHHH?" when they read that vtime's favorite billiken coach was ron coleman? here are the questions again: 1. Channel 5 anchor Deanne Lane, would ya? 1. totally. imo, unless the team just totally falls apart or he is caught doing something unethical, i have no timetable/deadline for coach soderberg. 2. Larry Hughes is the most incredible billiken I have ever seen, however, Justin Love and Anthony Bonner were just huge shoulders. favorite coach was Coach Romar. No one was more personable and geniune imo. 3. either Adam Knollmeyer or Obi Ikeakor 4. unless a fourth star emerges, imo it is C. 5. deanne is an attractive woman, however if we are picking experienced local news talent beauty winners i would take KMOV's Donna Savarese or Virginia Kerr. STLfan
1. Yes, but if we fail to reach the post season this year (NIT/NCAA) I probably won't be. 2. Marquee Perry, Spoon 3. AK some games, HD some games, OI some games, JJ who knows. 4. 1st or 2nd in conferece and a trip to the ncaa tournament. How deep we go will depend to much on our seed and match ups to predict now. 5. Yes

They have two pf's inside or a pf and sf. You dont need a true center in college basketball and soon wont need them at the NBA. They will be a luxury, but are far from a necessity. Box and Won
Good idea for a thread, FromGreeceWithLove. 1. Yep - for now. I give him two seasons to turn things around. 2. That's a tough one. Love, followed by Perry and Waldman. 3. Knollmeyer. 4. Somewhere in the B-C range. I think we'll be on the bubble. 5. Heck yeah. I'd rather give it to Virginia Kerr from Channel 4 though. Pistol
1. Yes, absolutely. No timetable- Kramer's freshman year (and that whole class) is currently the last year of his contract. If things go well, extend it after that. I like giving coaches time to build. 2. Marque Perry, Lorenzo Romar/Brad Soderberg tie 3. AK or Dixon. I would also like to bench JJ as much as possible. 4. C: 20+ wins, early exit from the Dance 5. Yes, absolutely. Good idea for a post. This ought to be a weekly tradition in the offseason to keep things interesting. NashvilleBilliken
1. Yes. But if we don't make the post season this year (barring significant injuries), i will probably change my mind. In BS's words "This is the most talented team since I've been at St. Louis."...post season is mandatory. 2) My tenure only goes back to '98. I have to go with Marquee and Soderberg. I liked Romar, the person, tremendously, but he left this program in shambles. 3)JJ...i'm going out on a limb here, but here's hoping he realizes this is his last year and get's his $hit together 4)C - exit second round 5)Just looked her up on the internet...sure, why not
FromGreeceWithLove
1. I am currently on board with Coach Soderberg; this is a make or break year for him in my opinion. 2. Marque Perry and Lorenzo Romar (has so much to offer the kids who play for him, both as a player and as a man) 3. Goin with Dixon for now. 4. c. Dancin, but a first round loss; after seeing GW's experience last season I see us getting a bad seed. 5. A little past her prime, but I would be game for Mrs. Lane. Quality Is Job 1
Here are my 5 questions for the week: I suppose it's a good idea, but, like Roy, I have nothing but contempt for the morning show on KFNS led by the three heads in the gutter. I would request that we keep it clean and related to the SLU athletics program. Also, as this is a discussion board where people can come anytime and doesn't have to be quick to include a lot of responses, I'm not going to make my answers short. Are you on board with Coach Soderberg; if not, how long do you give him before giving him the ax? I'm on board, and I hope he does very well. I want to see the Billikens become a program that annually competes for conference championships and plays in the NCAA Tournament, getting at least as far as the Final Four at least once in my lifetime. Who is your favorite Billiken player of all-time and your favorite Billiken coach of all-time? My favorite Billiken player has been Larry Hughes, though I wish he'd stayed longer. If we amended the question to include only players who completed their SLU eligibility, then my favorite is Erwin Claggett. Tommie Liddell could eclipse them both, though. My favorite SLU coach is Lorenzo Romar, though Soderberg could surpass him if he establishes a pattern of excellence (i.e., NCAA Tournament wins). Who is your pick to win the starting spot at the 4? I think Justin Johnson will win the spot, but he may not play much more than 20 minutes per game. I think there will be plenty of playing time in the other one-and-a-half frontcourt reserve spots (Bryce Husak will get at least half of one) for the three frosh forwards (if one of the newcomers doesn't redshirt). What is your prediction for the upcoming season? a. Around a .500 record with an early exit from the A-10 tournament; b. Around 18-19 wins and a trip to the NIT; c. 20 plus wins, a trip to the Dance, but an early exit; d. 20 plus wins, a trip to the Dance and a run to the Sweet16. Put me down for "D," though it appears that "C" would be more likely. My daydreams include SLU's going 23-6 (13-3 A-10), reaching the A-10 Tourney championship game, getting a No. 6 seed in the St. Louis regional bracket, winning two games to get to the Jones Dome, where they will win one and then push the regional winner (the team making the Final Four) to the limit before succumbing, if they can't do what George Mason did. Nevertheless, if the Bills go 20-11 and reach the NIT, I will consider it a successful season. Channel 5 anchor Deanne Lane, would ya? This is the kind of question that degrades the discussion and makes me dislike the KFNS morning show. Nevertheless, because others have humored you, I, too, will respond to the question. No, because she's not my wife. Nor would I choose her as my wife if it were possible. I prefer chocolate. I don't watch the news enough to be able to tell you who in local media I think is attractive that I would consider.
FromGreeceWithLove
I think most of the people have enjoyed this little game and it looks like you have done your best to take the fun out of it. Obviously the last question is not on the topic of Billiken basketball, but it is all in good fun. I leave it to your judgement to monitor those who take it too far or post something inappropriate. I do not think anyone would say anthing from the above discussion has gotten out of hand or completely void of any discussion of Billiken basketball. I was just proposing it as something fun during this slow period of college basketball, I leave it to you to decide if this is something we can continue. I am not doing this to humor myself thicks, I just thought it would be fun and open up some good discussion, instead of the constant bickering we currently have. I get enough humor reading posts from those who feel JJ is a super athlete deserving of a starting spot.
