We have probably had better teams, but those teams in 88-89 and 89-90 really were exciting. As ClockTower noted, we were seriously close to dropping to DivIII before Grawer turned things around. I was an undergrad during the Ekker debacle. It was a thrill to see the team turn things around and AB was an absolute beast.

That's pretty tough, Roy. It would be my hope that your years at SLU might have encouraged you to be a bit more compassionate. Kids that are allowed a second chance and succeed, as many do, validate the actions of those who trust them. I do see your point about holding scholarship kids to a higher standard, but it occurs to me that having your dirty laundry aired in public probably pays for that. Frankly, I would feel differently if this was an offense involving weapons or violence. IMO, some idea of the punishment fitting the crime is in order.

I agree that there is a distinction to be made between the two scenarios. However, if you believe that SIU will feel that way, I believe you are mistaken. I'm not real wild about recruiting kids that have verballed because it adds the possibility that competing programs will yell "foul", whether it is or not. Appearance of propriety is of value in and of itself.

I too am embarrassed by the University's actions. The lack of integrity in the handling of this matter is appalling. Frankly, I would feel the same way if there was a superstar coach ready to to take over. Apparently, CL herself made representations to the parents of prospective recruits regarding Brad's status. All the kids in the program have been left in a bad spot and no explanation has been made to the loyal fans of the program and none is likely to be forthcoming. To answer 72's question, I've been a fan of the program for 30 years. Today, I'm not a fan of the University. I don't give a tinker's damn about the landscape of "Big Time Hoops". The school and it's administrators are supposed to stand for something. I'm afraid I now know what that is.

Get serious. How are we not starting over? New coach, new philosophy, new offensive and defensive systems and at least a possible loss of current scholarship players. You are kidding yourself if you think this is anything other than a fiasco. It's going to be a rude awakening for many when it becomes apparent that Brad wasn't the problem to start with.

I watched a few Billiken games with my Dad as a child. The Bills used to get quite a lot of coverage in the old St. Louis Globe Democrat which was the paper that was delivered to our house. I read the sports page in it's entirety all the time. At some point, along about my Junior year in high school I was sitting around watching television on a Saturday afternoon, thinking about possible college choices, and ended up watching the Bills play DePaul. The Billikens rallied to win that game in thrilling fashion. Randy Albrecht was the SLU coach and Ray Myer was coaching the Blue Devils. Months later, when it can time to choose between Illinois State, SIUC or SLU, I picked SLU. There were certainly other factors involved in that decision, but I remembered that game for some reason.I've been a fan ever since, although the team mostly stunk during my years I actually attended classes as a undergrad and grad student. Grawer was just showing up as I was leaving. In fact, he lived in Lewis Hall for a brief period after first taking the job and I had dinner with him on a couple of occasions. BTW, Bay Area, I was at the Greenville game at West Pine. I believe we also played William Penn at the old gym on one occasion. This is a great thread.

You raise a point which I believe had an impact on DM, AK and the bench in general. We played a lot of close this year; not blown out much and not blowing people out. It's tough to find time for unproven commodities when winning and losing is on the line.

Gentlemen, my comments were not directed at either of you two in particular, or any one person at all. I'm not that tactful. It's just an observation that being a fan of any program is a purely voluntary association. If one's associations cause anguish and dismay, it may be time to reevaluate their benefit. All of those that support the program are certainly encouraged to soldier on. To those that wish us well, God bless them. To those that don't...oh well.

Drew looks for reasons to get worked up. I read that release and it's a typical puff piece for the kids issued by the AD's dept. What the Hell do you expect them to say? Have you ever read a media guide? The use of the word "historic" is a poor choice of words as the writer never goes on to say what is historic about the season except that it's over. Did you expect to see an acknowledgement that things aren't as we would wish? Get serious. As to whether you should continue to support the program, everyone has to make their own decision on that. I would certainly not advise one to follow a course of action they found aggravating or unrewarding. I could literally care less what the tubs on the radio think.

I agree with your assessment of the situation. It may be that it's a question of one's own reality. I just don't see the athletic dept. changing, regardless of who the coach is. From my perspective, the only way to get anything accomplished is to work within the system that is in place, trying to make changes wherever possible. I suppose those hours of philosophy and theology weren't wasted on me. I place a high value on intregrity and, admittedly, prop Brad for that.
