The New York Times did an interesting piece on Fordham's home court several years ago (here). It's NY, so no fans. It must be strange for today's players in empty gyms, but perhaps even more unusual at Fordham, on a court from the era of Naismith, the inventor of basketball. A few interesting bits from the NYT article: after becoming famous, Vince Lombardi led a capital campaign to get a new gym, but he died before the money was raised. Digger Phelps, the Fordham basketball coach at the time, left Fordham for Notre Dame. There seems to be no desire for a new Fordham gym any time soon. While coaching football at Fordham, Lombardi was on the faculty (when Jesuit education was old school): Lombardi taught Latin and Roman military strategy before he left to coach in Green Bay. The Fordham football team, which dissolved for a long stretch, was reinstated about 30 years ago, in the Patriot League. Our basketball attendance is typically better than Fordham's football attendance. Let's hope the Bill's visit to the "historic" fanless Rose Hill Gym today produces a good result, and that the better Jesuit school wins.
