SLU 1 VCU 0

4-2-3-1 for SLU throughout. 4-3-3 for VCU. SLU doesn’t see a lot of 4-3-3’s.

……………

VCU is a tricky inconsistent team. They looked pretty good against Stanford and a few other high level teams, and not so in a few other games. They have not been getting results. VCU and Loyola have been the two biggest league disappointments thus far.

………….

SLU was fine in the first half except for judging some final 25 yard passing pace with the wind at their back. I counted 13 times, where this was an issue. That’s a lot.

Many of these were well developed possession with triangles and give and go passing but there was a bit too much pace on through balls, down the line and over the top in the final 18. Several of these would have otherwise been higher level scoring chances.

One that wasn’t was a long ball in space from Miller to Gaebe who ran on to it and one timed a left footed shot far post for an early goal.

It’s a little bit of an issue when SLU subs out Gaebe and Larson at the same time. And this was mid way first half.

VCU had 2 dangerous opportunities by comparison and little possession in the first half. One chance was their only set piece corner loose ball, cleared away. The other was a transition turnover give and go side of the box shot that hit the bar. There were 2 other transition plays that didn’t result in much for VCU.

……………..

In the 2nd, against the wind, these similar plays and passes above were kept in play offensively by SLU which resulted in more opportunities in and near the final 18.

SLU opened the half maximizing effective offensive personnel, and SLU applied some pressure and had a Gaebe miss off of the post, and a few other chances over the bar. Miller wide off of a Houck free kick. Gaebe had a nice diagonal ball for Sawyer to run on into space and she put it off off the bar.

But again some of the substitution patterns were less effective. And, SLU would have benefitted from moving Larson to the middle during parts of that game.

VCU’s approach with the wind was to often launch 35 yard shots that were ineffective. SLU did well to defend the final 22 yards. Little inside the 18 in the 2nd. They had one chance off a long free kick, loose ball in the box and a save by Puricelli. And they had one failed clear that bounced back into the box and the shot was pit over the bar.

SLU’s back line was better in the 2nd half. SLU dominated possession in the first half. But 1) SLU isn’t a possession team 2)! SLU is better in more direct, wide open games. That tends to happen more in the 2nd half against tight marking teams.

Credit to VCU for playing a hard 90 minutes. They were physical and they gave little space in the first half.

RPI after Sunday’s games:

BYU 9

Brown 18

Nebraska 24 (Dale has 17 goals)

SLU 26

Xavier 28

Dayton 48

Creighton’s RPI worsened 80 points in a few weeks with four straight league losses. Not ideal.

I'm not sure if other SLU teams have posted similar links to team stores but they have some nice looking Nike gear along with the hosts "BSN Sports" gear (not sure of that quality though).  If anyone is interested in buying for you or others it looks like you have 15 days to order.

Now this is how you support chick sports.

BSN Sports is a division of Varsity Brands. They do both entire athletic departments, as well as individual teams high school and college. Often they are preseason short window pop up sales, etc…apparel and sporting goods. They partner with many major brands.

For those of you who watch this team, opinions of Emily Gaebe?  She is becoming my all time favorite.   She is like a bowling ball plowing defenders at will while maintaining possession.  The closest comp I have is Jordair Jett.   Both highly skilled and relentless.  Glad we have her another year.

She’s deceptively quick and when she gets going downhill you’re not gonna stop her. Only knock on her is that one track goal scorer mentality. She can try to force things sometimes when she should make a pass.

Emily Gaebe is a fun player to watch, she always looks like she is going to run over the defenders. She probably should make a pass sometimes  instead of trying to score, but she’s great to watch.

Emily is a high level forward who excels as both a target, and in space. strong finisher, heavy shot, both feet, can dribble down hill with the ball close to her feet. She’s often dragging 2 or 3 defenders in the box or from the wing on diagonal runs. And this has also freed up space for other players who have taken advantage of it.

Emily is one of the country’s best at earning corners in the attacking 3rd, which is how SLU scores many of its goals. (2 today) She is a high IQ player that does many things well that many of probably don’t notice. She’ defends both with pressure and backtracking.

Emily is a very good and willing passer. She had the great pass today to set up Sawyer’s goal. She is 2nd on the team in assists. She combines well with those who excel at that aspect of the game such as Larson, Groark, Simon, J Preusser.

What’s interesting about Emily is that she has been underestimated several times in the past at each new level. She’s from a smaller town. She didn’t play on a high profile club soccer team for a while. But she has excelled at every new challenge.

She helped lead her small town high school team to 2 state soccer final fours. When the competition level increased at both the high school and club level, she continued to put up big numbers. She eventually landed on a club team coached by a current SLU assistant. They were the USYS national champions. No problem, she kept producing the same way.

When she arrived at SLU, some wondered and even asked if she could play at that level and now, an annual top 25 team level. No problem. She simply adjusts to each new higher level.

Last season and part of this season she has been asked to come off of the bench because she’s better at it than some other players, and SLU only plays one player up top. No problem. She does need to be starting games, and she has the last few games, and her minute level needs to be closer to 70 plus in more competitive games.

An accomplished hooper, Emily’s nickname in high school hoops by her teammates was Bulldog.

SLU 4 Richmond 0

4-2-3-1 for SLU. 4-4-2 diamond for Richmond.

(Gaebe up top, Larson and Kelly on the wings and Groark in the middle.)

Adam Denton is in his first year at Richmond since coming over from Davidson where he had some success. It will take a couple of season for him to get it going a little bit there.

Sustained heavy pressure throughout for SLU. Larson from Heckel left side of the box beating 3 defenders far post. Kelly set piece header from Luebbert’s corner. Lawler off of Luebbert’s corner, and Sawyer from Gaebe.

25 shots, 12 corners, and several more chances and near misses for Larson, Simon, and others.

Every healthy/available field player, played double digit minutes. (3 injured/unavailable)

First place in the A10.

Scouting UMass:

They like to play a 4-2-3-1. They will often build wide up the wings, especially the left side through Lamond. She works well with Racinos at central attacking mid. Those 2 provide the bulk of the UMass attack. Very experienced center backs with Kane and Peric who adds a lot of size. Ryan likes to get forward at RCB and tackles well. Mendoza is solid in goal. A defense first team that finds ways to keep opponents off of the board.

This is one of the the top tier A10 opponents for SLU.
