Damn.  They are decimating a pretty good team.  Emily Gaebe is a cold blooded killer.

Larson and Gaebe absolutely burned the same defender on back-to-back goals. Ruthless.

Hannah Sawyer is out there looking like Midtown Messi in the past few minutes. Almost made it 6-0 with a really impressive run.

🤣 6-0 with 3 seconds left. SLU had a late corner, UMass defender popped it way up in the air with a header, and it came down right by the goal line and apparently went in off Macy Lutz (UMass wanted a handball and they may have had a case there).

Bring on Rhody.

SLU 6, UMass 0. Many were the vuvuzelas given away at this game, and I had the luck of sitting near a bunch of 8 year olds who throughly enjoyed making noise on them. Other fun activities with a vuvuzela at that age are apparently waving them around and dancing if you are a girl, and whacking your friends with them if you are a boy.  Fun times!  In any event, I was expecting the Billikens to have a tough time scoring goals against the tough UMass defense, but I was wrong. UMass came into the game allowing only 9 goals all year per the program, with their goalkeeper having a .69 goals against average, which are impressive numbers. Numbers are not so impressive now, with the Billikens scoring 6, and it didn’t look as close as the score indicated. Goals by Emily Groark, Hannah Larson, and Emily Gaebe in the first half, and Caroline Kelly, Emily Gaebe, and Macy Lutz the second half. On both the Larson and Gaebe goals in the first half it looked like there wasn’t a single UMass defender who thought those two could move down the field that fast. The UMass offense could not muster a shot the first half. They also didn’t do much the second half, then in came all the subs. I really liked the last goal because it showed two things you need to do in soccer, 1.) Always hustle, 2.) Play to the whistle. SLU got a corner kick in the closing seconds, Nina Preusser hustled, but didn’t allow herself to be rushed and delivered a great ball after the 10 second countdown had started and Macy Lutz won the scrum in front of the goal with 5 seconds left. Hustle and play to the whistle. As for the handball complaints by UMass, hey, that wasn’t why you lost. Did they have some horrible travel delay or something coming here that affected them? Oh well, great win.

Discussion point: which player in the SLU freshman class has impressed you the most? I’m going with 1- Eva Schreiber, 2- Nina Preusser, and 3- Alyssa Bockius in that order.

Scouting UMass:

They like to play a 4-2-3-1. They will often build wide up the wings, especially the left side through Lamond. She works well with Racinos at central attacking mid. Those 2 provide the bulk of the UMass attack. Very experienced center backs with Kane and Peric who adds a lot of size. Ryan likes to get forward at RCB and tackles well. Mendoza is solid in goal. A defense first team that finds ways to keep opponents off of the board.

This is one of the the top tier A10 opponents for SLU.

SLU 6 UMass 0

4-2-3-1 for both.

UMass had 1 first place vote in the preseason A10 poll. SLU noticed.

SLU failed to convert a few of about a half a dozen chances in the first 7 minutes of the game. (Gaebe alone on a diagonal run over the goal, Larson from 5 yards deflected Luebbert corner loose inside the 5, free kick Houck to Heckel headed wide, off of the keeper wide, etc…)

The difference is SLU had sustained 90 minutes of pacey pressure, and defensive positioning. And this was quickly turned into offense.

…………….

Talked recently that Emily Gaebe is a very good and willing passer, and her efforts helped set up SLU’s first two goals and it moved Gaebe into a tie for the team lead in assists on the season. She switched fields and played a ball to Kelly who chips to Groark for the far post header 1-0. She then curled a nice left footed ball diagonal ball in space dor Larson to run onto for the bottom far post left foot finish from the left side. 2-0.

……………….

Gaebe went on to score 2 goals on 2 equally great passes from the central attacking midfield into space, one was a diagonal ball from Julia Simon, and the other was inside out classic from Emily Groark between 2 defenders.

……………….

It was the 3rd straight game Gaebe has started, and it was the 2nd straight game where Kelly started at the same time. SLU has outscored opponents 10-0 in those 2 games.

It’s still a 4-2-3-1 formation. It moves Groark to the middle and brings in Simon at that spot later in the half.

The attack often begins with Larson and Gaebe. But with tweaked personnel and positioning, extending it with Kelly, Groark, Simon, etc…and some others, is what can separate SLU from some other teams.

………………

2nd straight game Jordan Gary played up top (and wing) as Sam De Luca has been out with injury. Sawyer also played up top later in the game. SLU is keeping Koch on the wing even though she played exclusively up top prior to SLU. She’s learning the wing.

Defensive midfield for N Preusser the past few games. Started the season there, switched to attacking mid awhile and she’s back to dmid. She’s an attacking mid player that’s playing both positions. (J Preusser played the central attacking mid position in the game)

……………….

Clare Nicholas sat out the rest of the game as a precaution after picking up a later first half injury sprinting forward, jump stopping, defending the UMass wing from right back. She sat out the rest of the game just as a

……………..

Izzy Luebbert places many high level end swing corners over and over again, with good pace, height,’location. And another goal happened there as Miller headed to Kelly for the volley goal off of a corner.

……………..

This is more of the 90 minute start to finish dominant performance that SLU is looking for as a team against the top tier A10 teams. Pressuring turnovers into quicker transition offense, sharp passing combination play, instead of methodical build from the back East/West possession mode, knock it around a bit.

…………….

It was a good RPI night for SLU.

RPI after Thursday:

SLU 23

BYU 5  (Nation’s best offense)

Brown 7

Nebraska 19 (20 goals for Dale)

Xavier 25

Dayton 73

Utah State 83 (have won 5 of 6)

Creighton 117 (2 straight league wins)

I might go with Preusser. Glad they're all getting some run lately, too.

The UMass keeper was really frustrated after that first goal and of course it kept getting worse for her from there. I really expected a good game here but they were just outclassed from start to finish. Shields was beaming when the postgame interview started. "This is the performance we've been waiting for" and "Emily Gaebe is special" and then some comments about not getting too complacent, but using this to raise the standard and building from there. Hopefully they can indeed do that, and that everything is coming together at the right time.

3 games left and they're against the teams that are 5th, 6th, and 7th in the standings. La Salle and Dayton are right behind SLU right now and it would be nice to take care of business and lock up that 1-seed.

The confidence last night from the whole team was off the charts. At least 5 times I said aloud "Oh no don't do her like that". They overwhelmed UMass and then just clowned on them the rest of the match, but did well to stay alert when UMass was threatening in attack. A lot of reasons to be excited with their form down the stretch.

SLU has moved into the top 5 nationally in both scoring offense, and, total goals.

………………..

3 Billikens were named to the Top Drawer Soccer midseason top 100. Heckel, Puricelli, Stram. (Gaebe and Larson should be added by season’s end) 10 players from SLU’s opponents made the list.

………………

Haven’t posed the video of the goals as often this season. Just haven’t gotten around to it as often. Sometimes the video shows part of the play developing and sometimes it doesn’t. And they may need more context. These need more context.

SLU’s first goal:

Far left side, changing fields with a target back to goal pass to Gaebe who makes a good pass to Kelly on the wing. Here, Kelly makes a nice play with Groark for SLU’s first goal. It’s an example of one of the many small overlooked things that Groark does well:

https://x.com/sluwsoccer/status/1712628554553270626?s=46&t=TsCCkuE48YmnkWfoKqc_Ng

Here is Larson’s goal, which doesn’t show the great play and left footed diagonal curl pass in space from Gaebe to send Larson in for her goal:

https://x.com/sluwsoccer/status/1712631014827176410?s=46&t=TsCCkuE48YmnkWfoKqc_Ng

SLU’s 3rd goal was similar to SLU’s 2nd goal. But this time Simon makes a great play and pass in the middle of the field to send Gaebe in 1v1 for one of her goals.

https://x.com/sluwsoccer/status/1712632207402061874?s=46&t=TsCCkuE48YmnkWfoKqc_Ng

SLU’s 4th goal is a classic SLU win the corner set piece goal. Luebbert to Miller to Kelly:

https://x.com/sluwsoccer/status/1712640012896924098?s=46&t=TsCCkuE48YmnkWfoKqc_Ng

SLU’s 5th goal:

Another Groark play, inside long ball splitting defenders for Gaebe from the middle of the field. 3 of those types of  goals on the night:

https://x.com/sluwsoccer/status/1712642760988115164?s=46&t=TsCCkuE48YmnkWfoKqc_Ng

SLU’s final goal was another corner, failed clear straight up into the air and bodies in front for the tap in N Preusser to Lutz:

Does anyone have any insight into why no live stream of the game tomorrow? That’s what the SLU website says, and also the Rhodey website doesn’t give a link to watch it. The stadium is right on campus, I’ve driven past it (Kingston, RI is not a huge place at all), so shouldn’t be an access to place issue.

I wanna say this happened with the Men's team last year at Rhode Island.

So, stupid question, if URI is not broadcasting a game tomorrow, which has been put out on the Billiken website and is not on the ESPN+ app as something that is scheduled, exactly what will be shown at the watch party at Dave and Busters, which is still being advertised on the Billiken app as a thing that’s still happening?

Ladies need to take these last two to finish first and host all tournament games.  Dayton has one game left againsdt lowly Rhode Island and should win to finish with 24 points.  Bills win both and finish with 28 points.  La Salle wins out over Loyolas and Davidson and also gets 27 points. (Three for a win; one for a tie). Duquesne currently fourth; St. Joe's fifth.

While this game wasn’t broadcast, statistically it was about the same as the UMass. Which is a real shame, because last game was a blast to watch. URI went into this game having only given up 10 goals all year, so logically it should have been a low scoring 0-0 tie or 1-0 win when two highly rated defenses match up, just like it should have been against UMass.

5-0 win by SLU. Goals by Emily Gaebe (assisted by Emily Groark) and Alyssa Bockius (assisted by Izzy Leubbert) in the first half, and goals by Caroline Kelly (assisted by Hannah Larson and Sophia Stram), Abbie Miller (assisted by Katie Houck) and Hannah Sawyer (assisted by Emily Groark) in the second half. Billikens got 35 shots, 15 on goal, 8 corner kicks to only 5 shots, 2 on goal and 1 corner kick by URI. Once again Emily Puricelli had to only make 1 save, was replaced by Becca Wolterman late, who made 1 save to complete the clean sheet again. Only real differences appear to be 1.) - the Billikens 3rd goal came in the second period instead of the first and 2.) - the last second shot by Hannah Sawyer (at the 90:00 mark per the stats) was saved by the URI goalkeeper instead of going in.  Two late season games against 2 of the best defences in the A10 result in 11 total goals and 2 clean sheets for the Billikens. I’d say they are in good form as the regular season winds up. Last home game comes up against Duquesne on Thursday, then on the road at St Joseph’s.

With the amount of $$ the A10 gave schools to invest in ESPN+ broadcasts, there should really be a rule.

I think there is a rule on how many games get broadcast in total across all sports, but it’s not all games must be broadcast, and each school can determine what games it doesn’t broadcast. SLU, for example, doesn’t broadcast field hockey because it’s an off campus location and it would be expensive to do with any attempt at quality ( I suppose someone could film it with an iPhone and stream it on line and it would be at least equal in quality to Flo Sports).  That gives schools a way to deal with offset locations and still comply with the contract.  Rhodey though plays on campus where it plays all other sports, so they should be able to broadcast them all. I would guess they are in contract compliance overall, but I couldn’t prove it.

??? Good question. I have no idea.

P.S. found the answer, and it’s no. Looking at the Rhody website, football is on FloSports, which is apparently what the conference they are affiliated with (CAA) in football contracts with.

It helps to see some of the other teams play other games. But even if you haven’t, and even if you don’t know their recruiting level, there are other notable differences between the teams.

1) UMass has a significantly better offense than Rhode island. They have more than twice as many goals. And they have done it against better competition on the season getting better results. They are roughly 100 plus spots better in the RPI. They have 4 RPI top 200 wins, a top 50ish road draw, along with another Power 5 win. Rhode Island doesn’t have any of that. Also understand that SLU is competitive with top 25 teams non-conference. And they recruit at a higher llevel. Those other teams don't have that.

2) The other thing that’s different is SLU. This is the 5th straight game where Gaebe starts. And it’s the 3rd straight game where Kelly started at wing and where Groark started in the middle, with Larson on the other side.

3) While SLU is a pretty well balanced team, one of its strengths is offense. It’s leaving a lot out to simply count goals allowed and say these are two defensive teams. And again, whom you play and getting results against those teams matters.

These things matter as SLU prefers a 4-2-3-1.

SLU goal 5th minute v George Mason.

SLU goal 9th minute, v VCU.

SLU goal 16th minute v Richmond.

SLU goal 24th minute v UMass.

SLU goal 10th minute v Rhode Island.

Gaebe either scored or assisted on 4 of 5 of those goals early in the game. And of course, her presence early in games creates space and opportunities for other players too.

Prior to that SLU hadn’t scored in the first half in its previous 4 games. They made a few adjustments.

Scoring early in games relaxes a team, and, it forces the opposing team to not sit 8 or 9 players defensively behind the ball. It can open up the game. SLU plays much better and much more effectively against these types of teams. It’s what they like. BYU and Nebraska play this way. UMass had a chance to try to make their game v SLU a defensive game but they didn’t. UMass tried to play SLU straight up and it didn’t work at all.

Two (or more) different games for example, can have the same scores or similar stats and be very different games.

Found out something which may explain this, URI is starting to compete in women’s lacrosse this year, next spring is their inaugural season. Maybe they are putting money into pushing the new program, so they found some money to do that by not broadcasting some games in other sports, especially games where they think they are going to get their asses handed to them. Shiney new thing usually gets more attention.

Except they put volleyball on ESPN+ that afternoon and their volleyball team is the worst in the A10. (Volleyball started at 3:00 and soccer was at 1:00.) I'm still trying to figure out how to blame football.
