Billboy1
Must face the fact the missed layups and rebounding are killing the team. Even thought the stats show not much of an edge in rebounding-a lot of ours were when the ball bounced off the rim right into our hands. On most of the rebounds UMass just out positioned and out muscled us. There is little hope that any of our bigs will be dominant in the paint. Hope Neufeld and Welmer are more of what is needed to compete.
JettFlight5
You realize there were two teams on the floor. You do realize that UMass was trying to stop what we were doing. What do you think Kellogg told his players, don't guard Crawford. They have Crawford and McBroom blanketed. Gillmann was left open. If the coaching staff didn't want him to take an open shot, then he shouldn't have been on the floor. Anything in the paint gets swatted out for UMass block #8. The zebras would have swallowed their whistles and let what ever happened happen. I'd rather Crawford take a contested 3. That's not a good defensive team....have the player playing the best take the shot no matter what. Crawford against 3 UMass defenders was a better shot than Gillmann, period. VeniceMenace
We have the worst offense in the A10. Crawford was out best offensive weapon yesterday .... So why is he getting 23 minutes instead of 30-35?

bonwich
Three of the four prior posts make no sense to me. Crawford 1 on 3? He's good, but he's not that big, and he's not that good. Poor substitutions? The staff used a subbing-in-and-out pattern that put us in a position to win the game after having been down what, 9? Yeah, you can argue that poor subbing got us down 9 in the first place, but I'd say that in fact poor shooting and a bad game by our current "best" player got us there and we almost rallied back. And it's not like our geeky, gangly frosh big-men are suddenly going to turn into mature players anytime soon -- with luck, Gillman could be our next Rob Loe, but it'll take time. (Someone needs to send Jolly to a shrink and/or give him back his binky.) Yesterday we were one shot (and/or better long rebound opp on that shot) short of playing just good enough to win. That (playing just good enough to win) is our next step up the ladder. PS Someone tweeted yesterday that UMass's final shot was a scoreboard error, e.g. the clock mysteriously stopped for two seconds. Anyone verify? slufan13
Yeah last basket shouldn't have counted. Wonder what the spread was? And I've questioned the subs all season. It's the subbing in the middle of the game that is most confusing to me

Bizziken
Overall, UMass is a pretty experienced team (Lalanne and Esho are Seniors/Gordon, Bergantino, Davis, and Hinds are Juniors). The fact that we played poorly and still took a relatively seasoned team to the wire is a little heartening, especially since UMass could very well end up with 10 (or possibly more) conference wins this year. However, this is exactly the type of game that we MUST win (and expect to win) next year.
GOSLU68
Substitution: Here is our official game plan and general rules from which we can not deviate: 1)choose starters; 2) no matter what is going on sub guards at 3:50 don"t wait until the rest of the subs come in at 5:00 into the game. 3)inbound goal get the ball in were only freshmen. Prefer to throw past mid court as number one option- try not to lose the ball 4)don't rebound on our free throws since we make 60% it is not worth the chance someone might not get back on defense on time 5) if we were close at half time stick to game plan we might get lucky in second half 6)we are only freshmen so learning plays is not required play one on one street ball if teamates are standing around 7)if coach yells at us about a mistake or something not working look the other way or walk away something else will happen to distract him in next ten seconds. 8) if our player shoots run to other end as we hardly ever get the rebound anyway take players out who stay to rebound 9) if I shoot run to other end as follow up has not produced many points this year 10) if we have a lead check to see if we can substitute as some of the players have not got their time in. 11) even though it is mid season be sure to substitute all players after they are in 5 minutes because since they don't play 30-35 minutes they tire easily after 5 minutes. 12) if your shot has not been falling stand around coach will probably take you out soon anyway 13) if your shot has not been falling look to pass rather than quick release shot 14) don't reach in to steal the ball sometimes refs call a foul if you foul you will get substituted for 15) if it is the last shot of the game and we miss don't try to rebound it is useless 16) if it is the last shot and the rebound goes to the other team don't foul maybe they will miss too 17) if the opponent starts a run don't use a time out. save it we may want to use it later. 18) for difficult inbound plays under our basket put in tall guys to catch long passes instead of fast people with good hands who can get separation; 19) remember what worked in past games and try and do that again. 20) remember what did not work in past games and try and avoid that. If they rotate over, so what? He was playing the best, and he should have looked for his shot.
brianstl
You have to run something at the end that has Crawford at least touch the ball at some point.
slufan13
The last thing I'll say about the last shot is that we never seem to draw up a play that gets our best guys open. Yes they're seeing tough defense but our set plays seem incredibly predictable and not creative.

I'm glad you are not the coach if you would seriously rather have Crawford against three guys than let someone who was 2/2 from three take a wide open shot.
