HoosierPal Posted October 31 Posted October 31 @studurando Josh Schertz said he “would be shocked” if Monday’s starting lineup against Santa Clara didn’t include Johnson, Swope, Jimerson, Anya and Avila. He said it’s likely he’ll use 7 or 8 players but that the game would dictate if others are needed. Stu last night speculated Thames first off the bench and then mix and match Dotzler, Hughes and Casey. Quote
slu72 Posted October 31 Posted October 31 I like Johnson a big guard and a D oriented guy. But he also went off for 17 against Marysville. Big guards do well in the A10. Quote

thetorch Posted November 1 Posted November 1 I really don't see Hughes playing more than spot minutes this season. Don't know why the board clings to him so much. Zink and SLU_Nick 2 Quote

He used his length and hustle to effect the game, which is why I was ready for him to take a big leap last year. If his game is going to be limited to floating around the perimeter launching 3s, I agree he doesn’t really earn minutes this year Quote

Presumably to expand his potential role. Quote

I don’t know why last season he seemed to regress. Quote

Don't know why the board clings to him so much. Well, you said it yourself Quote He can contribute. He gets too much attention because of his name but having him play on the team adds other things to the program. I hated seeing Monroe Douglas Jr get rebuffed by us and walk on at Dayton and contribute. Now he has an awesome daughter at Burroughs who if he went to SLU would be a no brainer for the womens program. She has tons of BCS offers and is not considering SLU. We wouldn't be talking about the WNBA potentially coming to St. Louis had his father and close friend gone somewhere else. Some things are bigger to a program and city than playing time. Quote
billikenfan05 Posted November 2 Posted November 2 Who cayuhs if he gets minutes? He had every opportunity and reason to go start fresh somewhere else. He chose to stay, based on what I would hope are honest conversations with Schertz about his role and future with SLU. Clearly Schertz finds value in his presence, doesn’t matter if it’s on court or intangible. If we’re winning and he doesn’t see the floor, i guarantee you nobody is going to care and again based on him deciding to stay Larry understands that this was a reality he is willing to live in. Now if we’re losing and he’s not playing, people might start caring. Players are more likely to ignore playing time if their team is winning. Remember, we left the “best player available” model when we dumped Ford. This is about putting very good basketball players in the right positions to play at an elite level as a team. If Hughes plays it’ll be because he’s a very good ball player who understands the system and his role. Fraz, slu72, Aquinas and 3 others 5 1 Quote

I think the dots are that since Jayson Tatum has expressed interest in a St. Louis WNBA team, it leads to the Hughes and Tatum families. https://www.si.com/wnba/celtics-superstar-jayson-tatum-involved-in-bid-for-st-louis-wnba-expansion-team Quote
