Recruiting - 2016

Recommended Posts

The closest thing to an inside source I have is a good friend of mine who is an assistant football coach at CBC. He knows Justin Tatum fairly well, and says Justin still claims that Jayson is seriously considering SLU but is also seriously considering Kentucky/Kansas/Duke. My friend says he never mentions any schools beyond those four when talking about Jayson's decision, and his sense is that it will come down to SLU and Kentucky. For what it's worth, my friend is a SLU basketball season ticket holder, but he also played football for Rich Brooks at Kentucky, so he has a rooting interest in both those schools.

Not sure how much any of it means, but anything suggesting Tatum is at least considering SLU at this point sounds like the best possible news you could hope for.

He went to the SLU - Harris Stowe game. He's either interested in SLU or he's a masochist.

I had someone tell me recently they heard from someone close to Tatum it was Kansas or SLU.

Bweix used to imply Duke was the leader.

So basically, it sounds like no one has any idea where Tatum is going.

I wouldn't put any stock into what Bweix says.

Everybody just needs to stop chasing their tails on this one. Let it play out - he will either come to SLU or not. For those of you who think it is a 50/50 situation I outlined above you are wrong - it is possible that SLU may be a 60 or a 40 chance - who knows.

Profound analysis.

personally id go to SLU out of laziness. I've helped a few people move lately and it sucks. Its only one year. Do you really wanna pack all your stuff just to have to move it all out again in a year?

This is an excellent point. Can we tweet this to someone who's a friend of Jayson's friend?

Believe this might be one of our best selling points. And to to expand a little -- it's not just moving costs and hassles.

When a kid goes away to college, they usually go to get away from the home environment as well as the high school coach, the high school weight coach/trainer, etc. and receive an upgrade: D1 facilities, trainers, coaches, weight lifting coaches, diet specialists, etc. As with SLU and most schools, the kids leave home and move to campus to start getting used to college, to start training, to start playing with their teammates, etc. And these relationships usually last their 4 years of college.

With respect to Tatum, I assume he is not only playing basketball year round but I also assume he is working out with a personal trainer or trainers for everything from basketball, to weights, to diet, etc. already. If he is going to be a "one and done" playing only 1 year of college, then which trainers will best get him ready for the NBA? I presume these guys may be outside of any college program. The summer prior to his Freshman year of college and the Spring following college is really the critical times. I would assume that it would easier to continue/start these sessions here in St. Louis, including the Bonner League, as opposed to Lawrence KS or Lexington KY. College is really only 8 months. In this regard, attending SLU might actually better prepare him for the NBA rather than KU or UK. The training and preparation, it would seem, are more important than the actual college games. Just a thought.

I don't buy this. His trainer, Hanlen, will be available to him regardless. Saying that SLU would prepare him better for the NBA than other schools is wishful thinking.

I don't care to argue specific points, but it seems like the top tier recruits all tend to go to the elite programs regardless of where they are from even if it is just for one year. Elite programs offer support staff, resources, and facilities that trump those a high school kid would be working with prior to going to college. I would have to imagine the facilities at Kentucky are quite a bit nicer than Lifetime Fitness and the strength and conditioning coach is slightly more knowledgeable than their father. I would also think that the vast majority of trainers would jump at a chance to work for a college program if given the opportunity and would make significantly more $ (a guy like Drew Hanlen may be an exception).

In the documentary, titled "Carmelo: Made in New York," Anthony talks in detail about how strongly he considered signing with the Bulls.

"It came down to Chicago and New York. Chicago was the one that, from Day One, was something that I was very impressed with. They was looking for a person like me to come in and just take them to the next level," Anthony said. "So it was perfect. It was a perfect setup, perfect fit for me in Chicago. But then also I had to think about just living in Chicago. Do I want to live in Chicago? Do I want to take everything that I created in New York and move all of that? It came down to that."

Tatum will not leave what he's building in STL

^ Yeah right! It's one thing to be optimistic but another to have blind bias. I hope FBJT chooses SLU like everyone else but to say that he's worried about moving material goods or his "legacy" is ridiculous. He's a college kid with the world at his fingertips and will be looking to go to the school that gives him the best opportunity to achieve his goal of playing in the NBA.

would it help if I did this:

SLU has NBA Hall of Famer Calbert Chaney. I don't care if CC isn't a hall of famer, we should just start saying he is. By the time people fact check, FBJT will be cutting down the nets from the National Championship game with his SLU teammates.

Haha. All these kids who agree to play in places like Lawrence, KS, Ames, IA, , etc., etc., are better men than me. You'd have to give me a lot more than free tuition to get me to live in a place like that, even if I was one of those rare top recruits who actually intended on completing a degree.

I guess. Either that or he's the son of a basketball star and a law school alum from his hometown school, which incidentally is the only D-1 hoops game in town. Hopefully he's both.

Larry Hughes and Calbert Cheaney were teammates that rivaled Jordan and Pippen.

You're missing my point completely. It's not that SLU might have better trainers, coaches, facilities, etc. than Kentucky. Instead, my point is that the continuity of specialists might better prepare Tatum for the NBA. You mention Drew Hanlen. Will he be available to Tatum regardless - such as relocated to Lexington? How do you figure? And if my son were Tatum, I would be having him work out with a team of specialists -- including NBA veterans. Godfather Larry Hughes??

In short, I would have a plan to get my son into the NBA (2) years from now and would not rely upon coaches and trainers from SLU, UK, KU or anyone else to coach up my son. And since my son lives in St. Louis, these trainers would be based in St. Louis.

How did I miss you point? If he goes to Kentucky, he will still work out with Hanlen (who currently trains out of town players such as Beal, David Lee, John Wall, etc. So he would not be losing his trainer. I have not seen anything to suggest that Tatum trains with Hughes. Any weightlifting and nutrition programs he has here would be even better at a place like UK.

If you had a son would you rather him play in the Bonner League or in a combine that UK puts on in front of lots of NBA execs?

You might be right Im not suggesting I really know these things but it seems iffy from what I understand.
