pakapablo
I have seen references all day to local "big-time" donors influencing Biondi and the decision to dismiss Soderberg. If these donors are so big-time why isn't our basketball budget? Billy Gillispie's annual salary at Kentucky is larger than the Billiken's entire basketball budget! Billikan
This is a myth being promoted by those who want to justify the firing today. They do not exist.
Bluesman
I have heard Kim Tucci, the Pasta House guy is a big supporter. What "big" means is a matter of speculation I suppose.
willie
Tucci is the only one I can think of as being a trustee /donor who would have Biondi's ear. That said I'm under the impression that Tucci was a big supporter of Brad.
p diddy
did anybody hear doug goettlieb on his espn show last night. he said that chaefitz (sp?) the new arena guy said he would pony up the remaining 8 million that's needed for the arena, but the coach would have to go. bad boyz for life
slu72
Supposedly, Cheyfetz (sp) was a big fan during his time at SLU. Who knows maybe he got in Biondi's face and said this guy ain't the answer.
3star_recruit
Sounds plausible but how would Gottlieb know when none of our local media does?
Billiken Rich
I don't know why but, if true, that makes me want to miss the toity in the new building......
davidnark
If true, Biondi made the right decision and everything makes a lot more sense.
brianstl
If it is true I really don't see what choice Biondi had. They need the building paid for. I still don't like the timing. It should have been done a month earlier or a month later.
3star_recruit
Let's say it is true. What lie do you concoct for the press conference?
brianstl
It won't happen, but it is what should be done. It is harsh, but this program can not walk away from $8 million. It just can't.
jjray
> did anybody hear doug goettlieb on his espn show last >night. he said that chaefitz (sp?) the new arena guy said he >would pony up the remaining 8 million that's needed for the >arena, but the coach would have to go. This is the only explanation I have heard so far that makes sense. None of our long time boosters is individually big enough to force Bionid to fire the coach at this late date. And I fail to believe there was a mass revolt of the boosters against Brad. $8 mill from Chaifetz is a whole other kettle of fish. Fire Sodie and you get $8 Mill ... how long would Biondi think over such an offer (if true)? No more than 2 nanoseconds.
brianstl
You mean we are going to get a press conference? That would be nice.
Schasz
It makes a whole heck of a lot of sense to me. Too bad that the timing was off primarily from a recruiting standpoint because I still believe there are viable HC candidates that will be interested in the SLU job. We just need to get the right coach this time.
brianstl
If that is correct the move becomes a much easier thing to explain to any canidate. It also shows that there is a source for big time funds when needed. That also makes the job a lot more attractive.

Supersonic
Not all boosters like all of the publicity or want their names in the paper. Kim Tucci loves to been seen and recoginized but he isn't a billionaire. Who knows what is true at this point!
brianstl
I doubt Novelly had anything to do with this. This action is not his style at all, not even close.
jjray
Tony Novelly ... good point but I had the impression CBC high school was much more important to TN than SLU, especially SLU basketball. I would be shocked if he forced a change but have to agree that he is a big enough fish to do so.
billiken_roy
i agree, however explain why it wasnt done the day after the loss to george washington? we are a joke.
slufanskip
If Cheifitz had his input, it probably wasn't fire Sodie. It was probably if I'm putting up this kind of money, we had better have a top program. He may have also stated that he didn't think UB was the guy and it went from there. Official Billikens.com sponsor of H Waldman Official Sponser of the Stemmler and Ahearn could and would have helped club.
