Joe actually allowed me to graduate.  And he was one of my substitutes as the PA address announcer for Billiken hockey games at the Checkerdome.  When it came to my final semester, I need a three-hour "internship" to complete my degree.  I assumed the role as associate sports editor at the Unews would suffice; Joe was the editor.  But saying so didn't work and I had to declare it and have it approved by Avis Meyer.  Seems only the editorship got you the credits not the associate role.  Joe could have easily said fuok off but he just stepped aside and gave me the title for that last semester and I graduated.  But Joe was that kind of guy.  Very eclectic (that whole damn newspaper staff was) but really a good guy.  It was great to see him again at an Old Boys Club gathering/lunch when I was back in town some years ago.  My life is richer for knowing Joe then and then reacquainting with him over these last few years back in this community.  Back in the days, his loyalty waivered between Wisconsin and the Bills.  But we won out.
Joe was always class.  He was the epitome of "we can agree to disagree"  and then go get a beer.  He will be missed.

I'm still processing this.  Absolutely heartbreaking.
Joe was a stand-up guy and a terrific human being, not to mention as dedicated a Bills fan as you'll find anywhere.  He was a loving husband and father to his five daughters (two sets of twins!), one of whom just got married a few weeks ago.  Doting grandfather, too.  His youngest daughter was his regular companion at Bills games, and I know he loved that.
He was something of a renaissance man.  Most people know him from his days as a restaurant critic, but he had advanced degrees in economics and computer science.  That's ridiculous.  It's rare to find anyone who combines right-brain and left-brain thinking like that.  In addition to writing for the Post-Dispatch, he worked for a number of marketing agencies here in town and back in the 90s was even a partner in a software company that went public and eventually sold.
He would crack me up talking about his house, which is in Stepford (Chesterfield - his words, not mine) but built in the 1800s, as he was always quick to point out.  And I liked ribbing him about the fleet of cars he maintained.  Joe was likely the smartest, wittiest poster out of all us MBMs, and I will certainly miss him on and off the board.  I'll even miss his corny puns.

I don’t know what to say.  I know some posters on this board have been freinds with him for decades.  I know it does not make what happened easier to deal with for them or the others that loved him, but my prayers go out to you all.  He always came across to me as a super sharp, good and decent man.
    i am just stunned.

I love the logic that goes into that conclusion.  The same people praising Burwell don't like Ortiz because of his race.
Sometimes people just aren't good at a specific job.  Ortiz might have been a good beat writer, but he has been a lousy columnist.  Neither of those facts are impacted by his name or his ethnic background.

The connections you would make as a premier athlete at an Ivy are just below NBA lottery pick on the value scale.  Go to the Ivy and be surrounded by attractive ladies the rest of your post college life because you are rich and connected  thanks to playing basketball at Harvard.

I understand that the priorities of athletes are different. But I've never ever ever understood athletes who decline offers from Harvard and other top academic schools.
I get it, Clemson as better facilities, fans blah blah blah. But damn...

If you have the chance to go to Harvard you do it. But maybe that’s just me

Rodrick Monroe was another bearcat that was built like a brick sh!thouse. Sadly, just googled him and he passed last May.

I'm starting to picture physical dominance of other teams like Cincinnati in the 90's.

College was cheaper, music was better, people were nicer because everything wasn’t political and you could actually get away from it all for a weekend because technology wasn’t so pervasive.

It won’t surprise me if this is Welmer’s last year at SLU.

Leniency for players has never happened with the student conduct committee.  What they did Reed and Mitchell was a miscarriage of justice.  Especially what happened to Reed in light of what the police report contained.

Being the the top ranked class in the conference one particular year isn't important.  The key is stacking good classes on top of each other.

They have to use AC/DC's Back in Black when they break out the black unis.

If you put their highlight tapes next to each other, it is hard to notice a difference, tbh

The NBA and NCAA are really similar games too.

I wouldn't say they are finished.  I think if THT or Rhoden said they wanted to commit, they would find a way to make it work.

13 is right, but the thing is you don't even understand what Majerus meant When he used that statement/

By the way, I know people don't like clicking on articles like Ortiz's hack job and that is fair, but you really should click on articles from Stu. The post believes clicks are a direct sign of interest level and if SLU articles don't get clicks they'll stop writing about us even more than they already have.
