BLIKNS Posted October 18 Posted October 18 Tony Bennett announced he is retiring.. So UVa needing a coach, really don't expect it to be Uncle Brad though Quote
TheA_Bomb Posted October 18 Posted October 18 Just saw that...is another Bennett retiring in a way to get Soderberg a job? Quote

HoosierPal Posted October 18 Posted October 18 Virginia players have a 30-day window to enter the transfer portal, but the season-opener against Campbell looms in less than three weeks. Quote
brianstl Posted October 18 Posted October 18 You got as much money as Tony and it isn’t enjoyable anymore, why not retire. Quote
thatskablamo Posted October 18 Posted October 18 I’ll be in Charlottesville today, of all days. Incredible. The Hoos are besides themselves. I don’t blame ‘em. Waiting to pick up a colleague in RVA, at the moment. Rivers Edge Coffee Co. - great little spot for a morning cup! Quote
Taj79 Posted October 18 Posted October 18 Brad isn't the top assistant, Ron Sanchez, former HC at Charlotte is likely the next coach if only on an interim basis. We shall see. Sodeberg is listed as the fifth associate/assistant coach on the roster currently behind Sanchez, Jason Williford, Orlando Vandross, and Isiah Wilkins. Edit: Sanchez gets interim title (10/17). Quote
gobillsgo Posted October 18 Posted October 18 Brad got his first big gig at Wisconsin when Tony’s dad retired three games into the season… Quote
HoosierPal Posted October 18 Posted October 18 Quotes from his retirement press conference, via ESPN. Bennett, 55, has long bemoaned the direction of college athletics and increased emphasis on the transfer portal and name, image and likeness. "I think it's right for student-athletes to receive revenue. Please don't mistake me," he said Friday. "The game and college athletics is not in a healthy spot. It's not. And there needs to be change, and it's not going to go back. I think I was equipped to do the job here the old way. That's who I am. "It's going to be closer to a professional model. There's got to be collective bargaining. There has to be a restriction on the salary pool. There has to be transfer regulation restrictions. There has to be some limits on the agent involvement to these young guys. ... And I worry a lot about the mental health of the student-athletes as all this stuff comes down." Quote
slu72 Posted October 19 Posted October 19 You have to wonder when the combo of the portal and NIL will destroy college sports for the fans like it has for the coaches. Jay Wright saw this coming. Nick Saban did as well. Now Bennett. If the sports starts losing their coaching greats how long until the fans come to the same realization that the current model truly sucks? That the do or die spirit for the olde alma mater is nothing more than a money grab. Old rivalries are falling to the wayside due to conference realignments brought on by broadcast/streaming $$’s. Cheering for your favorite players is a temporary fling once they decide to enter the bidding war for their skills. When will big money donors get tired of shelling out every year for players who care less about the colors of their uniforms than they do the size of their checking accounts. When will fans stop buying the jerseys of their heroes when they realize they’re basically mercenaries who could end up playing for your most despised rival a year later? And the whole David beats Goliath dream becomes just that, a dream. I’m afraid we’re seeing the end of an era in college sports as it will eventually evolve into the pro business model. There will be Major League schools, ie the power 4 or 5, and a whole gaggle of minor league teams. Quote
Taj79 Posted October 19 Posted October 19 The only "stuff" I buy has to say "Saint Louis University" on it. I got to that point at least a decade ago with the pro sports and the college sports will soon follow. But I'm a grumpy old man who has evolved to this point now. My 40-year-old son-in-law still goes to bed mad when his NY Giants lose. That's not worth it to me ..... pro sports is just another option for my disposable entertainment dollar. College is there as well but lives on longer due to alma mater U. I'd buy a team-related jersey to dress with the crowd but it would have to be a retired player who was financially loyal to the organization. I'd buy a Gibson Jimerson jersey but not a Larry Hughes. Mike Schmidt. Cal Ripken Jr. Brian Dawkins. No to Aaron Rodgers, Odell Beckham Jr, Saquon Barkley. Just me. Quote
