Name the last successful first time head coach with zero college coaching experience? Most of the guys that have landed jobs like that are former NBA stars that also spent time coaching in the NBA. Rich Grawer. Not disagreeing with your point, but Grawer coached us through some good years with Bonner, Douglass, Gray, etc.

I agree that Grawer had plenty of success, especially with very limited support from admin. That said, I would not be in favor of hiring Tatum. SLU is at a different place than the 80's when Rich was hired. Let's see how this year plays out. If we have great success this year, this discussion will be moot. Maybe Harriman is making a difference. We'll soon know.
thetorch
This is just the same story we've heard over and over again. Anytime SLU's HCing position is up a local HS coach must be considered. It has made us seem small time for decades. Tatum doesn't have enough qualifications to be the head coach here. Why would we need local recruiters. We have Corey Tate already. Everyone locally loves Tate. Has he gotten us the best STL players? Not even close. Tatum can't do better. He isn't close to being that liked or respected. You’re old enough to remember Gerry Faust. Cincinnati Moeller to Notre Freaking Dame.

No I was just echoing your sentiment that it’s foolish to take someone from the HS ranks to the upper echelon of college sports. Faust’s hiring was the death knell for Moose Krause. Going that route would be the death knell for any athletic director moving forward. And, of course, Faust is a Dayton alum.

DOC
I don’t get why anyone would want Tatum. Jerry Faust ran one of the most successful high school football programs in the country and failed miserably. Tatum didn’t even run the most successful program in St Louis. Does he come off as someone who would be a great recruiter? I mean he couldn’t even get his own kid to play for him. No thanks. gabriel, thatskablamo and billiken_roy like this
