courtside Posted October 4, 2024 Posted October 4, 2024 SLU 1 Saint Joseph’s 1 Last year, the first year of no overtime, SLU had just 2 draws/ties. This season they already have 5. …………….. 4-2-3-1 for Saint Joe’s. It’s what they play every game. And they played it deep with 8-9 behind the ball. 4-2-3-1 for SLU. This is the preferred formation of Katie Shields over the years. The twist is that SLU has moved Lucie Schwartz to defensive midfield. She is a left wing and a forward. The idea is to provide a 2nd defender there, but have it be someone that can get forward, distribute, offensively too. Similar to Elise Le next to her. she is new to the position. SLU tweaked late to 4-1-3-2 with new personnel. ……………… If an opposing team sits 8 or 9 behind the ball. you have to get numbers forward. Any time you move 1 or 2 defenders forward, there is some risk defensively. But if your top issue is scoring goals. you have to do it. SLU did not most of the game, until the 75th minute. ………………. 1st half …………….. 1 of 2 Hawks chances in the entire game came very early. A bad deflection in the attacking 3rd SLU knocked the ball hard up the middle of the field with Schwartz and Le caught forward. Transition pass was placed in space beyond Heckel and Stram to Hanrahan their best player. A better finish and it’s an 0-1 game. 3rd minute. In most instances, a speedy forward is going to beat a center back in space in transition. Happens often. …………: Gaebe long diagonal run right side, had Sawyer all alone back post. But she took a soft short angle shot with little on it. Houck hit the cross bar side of the box shot. Gaebe had a nice feed from Sawyer blocked at the 8 last second. Would have been a wide open goal. Larson made a nice run and service across the 6. All of this was in the first 5 plus minutes. Good start. …………… 7th minute. Short corner Luebbert snd Larson 2v1. Larson in alone blasted it right to the chest of the keeper. from 10 yards. A better finish is a goal there. ……………. Almost a near post header goal from Stram in the 8th minute from a Luebbert corner. …………… 16th minute goal. Luebbert corner at the 6. Good job by Heckel to occupya defender. Loose ball to Le who had her point blank shot stopped, but Gaebe was there for the rebound. Lots of traffic at the 6. 1-0 ………….. 18th minute goal. 50/50 ball midfield, Fisher knocked Schwartz off of the ball and she made another run. Hit it from 35 yards and she caught Puricelli off her line at the 6 yard line. Emily misjudged the over the goal tip. She had other options. Misplay. 1-1 Those 2 plays were the end of the Saint Joseph’s offense for the game. 72 minutes left to score one goal. ……………. Similar to Loyola, Saint Joe’s blocked a lot of shots inside the 17. Play a 4-2-3-1, deep back 6 and drop the 2 wings for 8 defenders behind the ball most of the game. Katie Shields seemed surprised that the Hawks would play that way. I have no idea why she’d be surprised by that. The only way to open that up is to get a couple of goal lead. …………… Build up was good. Heckel did well with distribution, on the ground, either up the middle or diagonal to wings. …………… One of the issues later first half was subbing out Gaebe, Larson, Sawyer, Simon, etc.. all at the same time for a period of time. Many of SLU’s opponents sit back and defend and they are not making frequent 40 yard runs into the attack. That takes more energy. …………. SLU had some 1 on 4 and 2 on 6 at the 18. Putting an extra attacker there and even an extra defender there helps. SLU did one of those late in the game. ……….. I thought Ashley Miller did some good work. Best of which was being strong on the ball physically, as well as calling for the ball. She received a targeted pass from Lang, shielded her defender, turned. and she placed a great through ball to Schreiber cutting in all alone. But her first touch from 8 yards was too strong. First touch has been an issue at times. Haas to be softer and more controlled. 35th minute. …………. For Freshmen, the two biggest adjustments are pace and physicality. The sooner a player adjusts to both, the more consistently they can contribute. …………. One of the things SLU needs to improve consistency with is valuing the ball in the final 3rd, the same way you would elsewhere on the field. ………….. Katie Houck had a nice low line drive free kick far post from 22 yards. But Heckel couldn’t get her foot on it for the tap in goal. She also had a nice line drive free kick just over the bar from 20 yards in the final minute of the first half. ………….. I’d like to see Hope Kim play more in the sub rotation than she does. She has the size, pace, skill. and poise to be dangerous in the attacking 3rd. …………. Halftime adjustments ………… SLU remained in the same formation. ………. 46th minute Sawyer wise right, diagonal run and service far post to Larson cutting in, but she couldn’t get her foot on the volley streaking in to the 6. Super close. Nice play. ………… Heavy sustained SLU pressure early in the 2nd half. Luebbert free kick along the end line found Heckel whose shot point blank from a few yards was kick saved out to Simon who one times a blast was missed just wide of the open side of the goal. 52nd minute. Heckel missed a header shortly after that. Lyndsey was much more active and aggressive inside of the 18. Need it every game. …………. A couple of near miss Larson crosses to Sawyer and Le inside the 6. ……….. Distribution and build up was good the whole game. Lots of sharp ground passes and combination play. ………….. SLU started fanning on several crosses wide of the box, and getting too many newr the keeper. ………… Kim give and go inside the 18 with Miller. But Kim’s service took a hopped up on Gaebe from 8 yards over the goal. ………….. 67th minute SLU changed formations to a 4-1-3-2. But they did so without Larson or Sawyer in the game. They paired Gary with Gaebe. Kim and Smith wide. Miller in the middle. Le by herself. Very Late. Good idea. You need someone who can finish in crowded loose ball areas within the 18, up top. And that’s Sawyer, Smith, or Schwartz. Gary would be effective at outside back. ………….. 71st minute SLU tried playing Simon and Miller together. (they play the same position) Good idea. And immediately Miller received a header from Smith 40 yards out, another strong turn, and right away she slotted a pass to Simon at the 18. In this formation and personnel, SLU paired Gaebe with Simon. Smith and Sawyer wide. Miller behind them. ……………. Double header Heckel to Smith up to Simon, up to Gaebe in behind the defense at the 18. Hawks Keeper did very well to run to the 18. If she doesn’t it’s a Gaebe goal. It caused Gaebe to just miss flicking the ball over the keeper. 75th minute. …………… Minus the Saint Joseph’s goal in space, this was Heckel’s best game of the season by a lot. She won many headers. She was dangerous and active inside the 18. Her passing and distribution was sharp and accurate. That was the All American version of Heckel. …………… Le took the space and played it wide to Houck, up the line to Sawyer. diagonal run corner of the 18. She cut in with a good look but she lost her balance on the shot over the goal. ………….. Houck corner, doubke header Heckel to Stram to Miller open at the 6, but she couldn’t get enough on her volley at the keeper. …………… Sawyer to Gaebe edge of the 18 1v1 down to the 6. But she went wide i stead of cutting in for a left footed shot. Bad angle drew a corner. Go the other way for a higher percentage shot at goal. ………….. Gaebe wide of the box cross deflected straight up into the air at the 6, but was headed out for a corner. ………… Another Sawyer diagonal run to Simon who brought it down and flicked itober tje defense for Gaebe in alone, but she took too long to chest it down and shoot inside the 6, and it was blocked at the last moment. ………… Houck cross from the corner near post for Simon. Nice play by the keeper. She was not touched but she went down and stayed down. ……….. 88th minute Stram near post header back to the far post trickled just wide off of a Larson corner. ………… I didn’t have a problem with the officiating in the game. I thought George had a bad game when he officiated the BYU game. My biggest complaint was time was wasted too often at times. Needed to stop the clock more often. But that was it for me. ………… I think SLU needed to consider the 4-1-3-2 much sooner. They didn’t need it for possession or build up. They needed ot for nunbers inside the 18 when the oppoaing team was sitting 8 and 9 behind the ball. Simon was a good idea there. Otherwise the most effective players in that spot are Sawyer, Schwartz, Smith. Another idea is to play 3 in back for a limited time or change personnel with a 4 back system to more offensive players that can get forward, or have a big target down field, even Heckel for a limited time. ………….. This was a 5-0 type of game as was the KC game. (KC losing 4 of 5 is not helping lately) ………… tarragona and boosterflight 2 Quote

courtside Posted October 4, 2024 Posted October 4, 2024 1 hour ago, OkieBilliken said: Who are we missing more Caroline Kelly or Chris Allen? It’s not that simple. Margins are small. In my opinion, SLU has outplayed its opponents more often this year so far than the past couple of seasons which were top 10 seasons. I think SLU’s current experienced players have the ability to finish better than they have showed so far this season. I also think the defense has the ability to be more efficient on their end too. Many of which are older players. SLU has 2 new starting defensive midfielders. One has never played the position before. The other is a Freshman. And now they have added a forward to that position. SLU has some promising Freshmen. But they don’t have the depth in the 2022 and 2023 classes. 2 of those players were injured and missed all of last year. 1 won’t be 100% until next season. And SLU has had limited success in the portal, which increases annually in importance. So it’s a combination of things. I know some people want a simple answer but reality is more complex than that. SLU had to talk a few more players into returning this year. Where would they be without those players? SLU is 6-1-5. They had endless chances to win 3 of those games in very lopsided fashion. They were also better than 2 other opponents that resulted in a draw and a loss. SLU very easily could be 11-0-1. They are not, and they are not close to that record-wise. But the overall level is there. It’s really about converting 1-2 more chances a game. I’d be more concerned if they weren’t dominating many of the games. Against Penn State for example, SLU had a 3.21 xG, missed a PK, and was better for over 70 minutes of the game. No other team has done that to Penn State this season. I think SLU at times is trying to score 5 goals at a time. I think they need more poise and relaxed confidence in and near the 18. Own that space. If you are 1 on 4 or 2 on 6, hold the ball with strength and wait for more support. SLU has shot poorly too often this season. More often low, hard, and to either side of the keeper is the default play, with proper weight balance. Carol has done well at TCU in her new role. She comes off of the bench and she plays 20 minutes leas a game than she did at SLU. And she plays much of it on the wing, but also up top. They play the same formation as SLU. Their starting wings and forward are smaller pace players. Carol gives them size, grit, toughness, and the ability to score a wide variety of goals when things break down. 1v1, she went wide and baked it intentionally off of the keeper. A few driving back post headers. 2 times on a loose ball shot deflected in traffic inside the 18 that redirected to the opposite corner. Some haven’t been the prettiest. A few were. Typical Carol. Chris Allen was certainly valuable in a variety of phases for SLU. He has a long rebuild, and he’ll coach up his players. SLU has good Associate and Assistant coaches. When SLU found Gaebe for example, the guy coaching her was SLU assistant Cal McKee . And Colleen Corbin was a great get for SLU. SLU hasn’t put it all together yet this season. But I like what they have, and I think they can still put it all together if they tweak a few things. It’s taking a little longer with some of the changes. And it may not happen. but, I think that can still happen before the season is over. OkieBilliken 1 Quote

courtside Posted October 14, 2024 Posted October 14, 2024 SLU 1 VCU 0 Any win is a good win. Strong, front foot start, many different high quality chances early and throughout the game for SLU. Poise and efficiency weren’t there in the final 20. Mentioned a few games ago that Hope Kim deserved more time. She has started the past two games. She created a nice chance at Duquesne, then she had a nice assist on one of Gaebe’s goals. But then she inadvertently got headed in the face by a Duquesne player, and she had to leave the game without returning. She was back and ready to go and she created a nice 1v1 opportunity with quality finish at the 18. Hope did miss the end of 3 different passes in front of the goal in addition to that. Need a better percentage there but she did improve her positioning during the game, tucking inside the defender, and getting stronger at the 6. Many different players took turns with very near misses, Houck just wide and just over the bar, Le off of the crossbar bar in front, Larson over the bar, and several more from a variety of players. SLU is struggling to figure out whom to play up top when Gaebe isn’t in the game. Sawyer, Smith, Schwartz, Fox are some of the capable players inside the 18. And SLU’s top few players sometimes sit a little too long at times in each half. SLU has settled on playing Schwartz in the defensive midfield to have an extra attacker in the game without playing a more aggressive attacking formation. Lucie has played left wing (she’s left footed), central attacking midfield, and forward in her soccer career. Overall, SLU’s defenders did well to get forward in the first half vs VCU. Houck, Le, Schwartz, Heckel etc… 2nd half was pretty windy and gusty at times, which mildly slowed SLU down but not too much. Winning games instead of tying or losing, is what matters most. How you play matters after that. SLU is doing several things well, and they are improving getting their defenders more involved in the offense Far too many shot misses are high throughout the season, rather than placed low and in the corners. Wide service finishing needs to be better. One challenge with playing so many different players and combinations, is sometimes not being on the same page in the final 20 in crowded spaces, where you know the subtle tendencies of teammates to make and finish more plays. SLU has still outplayed its opponents more often this season than the previous few seasons. ……………. SLU’s RPI is 35 with 4 regular season games left, plus the conference tourney. …………….. boosterflight, slufanskip and blue bodega 3 Quote

Eclipse, Galaxy, FC United, Sockers, Chicago Inter, FC 1974, etc…are some of the club programs there from which SLU recruits. 2024 SLU player Sarah Sarnowski played for FC 1974. Hana plays 3 positions, center back, defensive midfield, and outside back. OkieBilliken, slufanskip, tarragona and 1 other 4 Quote

OkieBilliken Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 SLU wins 2-0. They outshot Richmond 20-0. Gaebe scores a goal. Scored two early and coasted. On to LaSalle. Let’s stay away from Temple. CenHudDude and Lord Elrond 2 Quote
