cgeldmacher
I don't know much about this kid, but Duquesne beat out Wofford, Illinois State, IUPUI, and Nebraska-Omaha for his services. If you are suggesting that these are the types of recruiting battles that SLU should be involved in, then I think you have warped expectations for our program. I don't think we "missed out" on this one like your title suggests. The above being said, congratulations to this young man for his signing. I look forward to playing against him in the future. Pistol
Not sure this deserved its own thread after we've been talking about it in the Recruiting 2016 thread, but I will say this: Lewis' stock has risen dramatically over the summer. He went from an undersized shooting guard being forced to play PG to a legitimate college two-guard. He's now listed at 6-2 instead of 6-0 and the difference looked even more dramatic to me when I saw video. He was already an excellent shooter with a lot of poise; now he fits his natural position better. He needs to work on building out his skill set, but the primary one is in place. Basically, I'd say Duquesne got him at exactly the right time. They were his best offer prior to his visit, and he made the commitment upon taking that visit. Good for them. I wouldn't be surprised to see his trajectory continue. I also wouldn't be surprised to see the next Billiken Killer on our hands. Micah Mason graduates, so maybe he's the heir apparent for that title at DU.
slufan13
Yeah seems like he's better now than what his offers showed. I have no idea what kind of relationship we had with him, but it sucks when a local kid's stock starts to rise but we didn't have the relationship with him for it to matter. That said, we already got a shooter with more size in this class. Would hope we're targeting a big or a point guard with the last scholarship

I'm guessing SLU, probably not alone in this tactic, was playing wait-and-see with him. And then we got the Moore commitment. I have no idea if Lewis was interested in SLU but the timing indicates that if we had an open line with him, it was over with Moore. Moore and Lewis are both high-level shooters. It will be interesting to see what kind of collegiate player each becomes.

We replaced 3 of these 4 with Neufeld, Welmer and Bishop so I guess Moore completed the 4th scholarship available from last year. This year, Ash will graduate so I guess we have had 2 open scholarships since the Spring, we signed Moore and now have 1 last scholarship to give out. wgstl
"The 6'2" Lewis made his commitment to the Atlantic 10 Conference school after making his official visit to Pittsburgh over the weekend. He is one of the premiere perimeter shooters in the state of Missouri." Mike is closer to 5'2 than 6'2. If he was anywhere close to 6'0 he would have much better offers. That has been and will be his biggest issue. Amazing 3 ball shooter and decent ball control.

We have one scholarship to give if Hines goes back to walk-on status. We will have more if we have transfers, which will probably be the case. Almost certainly, really: there are 351 D-I schools and over 700 transfers this year. So purely based on averages, we'll have two more guys depart. It's an even safer bet based on one six-man class and the fact we're not going to be very good. We should still be recruiting the 2016 class hard. PG and bigs. Can't be afraid to over-offer. That's the reality of the college basketball landscape right now.

Pistol
Meaning he has grown tremendously? I'm not sure where you pulled 5'2" from - maybe you saw him in 6th grade or something - but he's now 6'2" and has clearly grown. Funny thing about high school kids is they're not all done growing. Funny thing about high school kids is they're not all done growing. I thought the sarcasm of 5'2 would stand out more, I apologize. When speaking with him and Drew Hanlen about 8 months ago he was a few inches shorter than drew and I. we're both 6 foot. It's possible and sometimes normal to grow a few inches in a HS year, but he had to have been no more than 5'9.

Funny thing about high school kids is they're not all done growing. While I question whether Mike is a high-major level player, if he is now 6'2" in addition to the obvious bulk he has added, my opinion may change this fall. Watching him last year, he just looked like an undersized shooting guard lacking the ball skills and quickness to play point. What a senior class at Chaminade with Tatum, Cook, Gladson, and Lewis all headed to major programs.
thetorch
I don't think this team needs more oversized guards without any ball skills. Just saying. Lewis can shoot, he has gotten better but he isn't a good dribbler or passer. He's a pure 6'2 shooting guard. Unless you shoot at a truly elite level those type of plaeyrs can be stopped at the college level. Once again we are better off with 3 pgs on the floor than a bunch of 2 guards like we have now. billikenfan05
I'm gonna go Old guy on this one. Mrjoelabs have you ever had a point in your job where you did everything you could but whatever you were working on just didn't pan out? Example as a part of my job I sell sponsorships and sometimes I'll meet or speak with a company that just has no interest or the marketing budget to do what I'd like them to. That's not my fault and I didn't make a mistake. My point is that I'm sure that some recruits just don't want to stay at home or they have no interest in SLU. So my point is I won't get fired for missing on a deal and crews really shouldn't either when we have a player of similar qualities already committed. Just treat it like his prior 129 posts -- worthless from a questionable fan.
