Those people already are doing the right thing. Unfortunately it’s the 1000’s of people who have no idea they are infected that are spreading the disease.
I hear ya when it comes to the economy Roy. It’s a huge problem and something needs to be done.
I just don’t think there is an easy answer here. Every idea that has been floated about has massive problems that come along with it. 
This is new territory and I’m not sure there is one right answer.

Thanks to corona virus, I was able to watch Tiger King on Netflix.  Holy sh1t. That was a journey. Absolute must watch. 

Times have changed from the plague and the 1918 flu epidemic. Population density is much higher. Personal interaction is much higher. Cross border travel is much higher. The assumptions from 100 or 700 years ago do not apply as accurately to the current time.

The only difference I can see between my description of Bell and yours is that mine was actually more detailed.  So that tells me that it wasn't really the assessment of his athletic ability that people objected to.  It's that certain words trigger negative images. 
In your mind you were just using troll as a short-hand for calling him big and heavy-footed, which is obvious to anyone who has ever watched him play.  Unfortunately, troll is also synomonous with "ugly" which is one of the worst things you can call somebody in an image-conscious society.   Once folks got triggered by that word, they weren't going to listen to anything else you had to say.   
Even really bright people, like the ones we have on this board, can have a blind spot when it comes to vocabulary and context.  Especially in a society with so many different cultural perspectives, where we don't give people outside our social circle the benefit of the doubt.
Note that I could introduce the term "bully ball" with barely any pushback.  By the end of season the board was celebrating it.  While our parents told us we shouldn't bully people, in the world of sports and business, bullies rule.  In the context that adult sports fans care about, being a bully is a good thing.
