It definitely will be challenged. That’s why I say just give them 5 years and no exceptions.  The NCAA can say they are expanding it from 4 to 5 years to account for all redshirts and hardship situations.  After the 5 year clock is over you are done.

They can make a caveat for people that do missions and other similar breaks in school attendance.  But, they need to be stringent on allowing no exceptions, it’s becoming a joke.

Four years or five years doesn't matter.  It is still a restriction.  If restricting to four years is determined to not be allowed by the courts, five won't be any different.  My point is that if that challenge is coming and wins in court, the NCAA won't be able to prevent it by making a five year rule.

The same thing is true of the transfer rule.  If someone thinks that restricting transferring is unlawful and should be allowed in college sports, then why is that concept restricted to year by year.  Why not semester by semester, month by month, week by week, or day by day.  You cannot say that transferring should not be restricted, but then arbitrarily apply a one year restrictions from transferring just because that meshes with the college sports season.

We're going to see some of the bloat exit in 2025 after the final season of COVID bonus players work through the system. However, I expect to see every stall tactic possible from players. Everyone is going to take advantage of the grad transfer rule now. If players have any chance at all to redshirt, medical or otherwise, you'll see them go for it. Any way to stretch a 4-year career into 5 will be utilized. And it's hard to blame them as long as the market exists.

Here's a question.  All of the arguments that were used to say that players shouldn't be saddle with transfer restrictions and shouldn't be prevented from profiting off of NIL could be used to challenge the four year limit.  Why should poor little college athletes that are constantly being raped by the big bad NCAA be restricted to a four year college career?  How long before that lawsuit gets filed?

Yuri would have been awesome to watch in any real offense in my opinion

I don't disagree, but his skills would have been highlighted as much in an offense that plays through the big men.

Zyree Collins can create his own shot from anywhere. Walsh, getting him now as a role player might be a good move in landing the 7-foot-3 teammate eventually. Good to hear CJS has contacted them.

Walsh is an elite shooter.  If Schertz can get him to buy into his system, I could see him working out.  A guy who can get his own shot, like Parker or, maybe Zyree, are not as necessary in Schertz’s offense.  You’ll always take them, but they have to be willing to not play hero ball and play the system.

  5. We also need to remember that we just brought in a coach that has a certain system.  In my mind, Yuri would not have fit in Schertz's offense.  I'm not sure than anyone who's superskill is slashing to the rim fits Schertz's system if they cannot fill it up from three.  Also, Schertz seems to be valuing size.

I will take issue with this. Sorry Zack this takes some reading:

You can't have 5 guys who can't bring the ball up the floor, or 5 guys who are short and can't defend the rim.  Identifying positions and players to those positions, helps in identifying team needs. For example, every team needs a player who can bring the ball up the floor under heavy, on ball pressure. That's a 1 or point guard. Every team has a second best ball handler who can bring the ball up the floor under moderate pressure and assist against full court pressure. That's a 2 guard or shooting guard. 3 guard or small forward is generally an offensive player who does not handle the ball under pressure. The  4 or power forward, is generally the second tallest player on the floor who can hold his ground near the basket, rebound and protect the rim. The 5 is generally  the tallest player who protects the post on defense. There are over lapping skills, like 4s compared to 5s.

Schertz 5 out offense reduces the significance of height in the half-court, because players can all hit 3s and pull defenders away from the basket. Though on defense, you are still looking at a conventional man to man or zone. Someone has to stop the apposing 6'9" and 6'11" post players.

Numbering the positions makes it easier to analyze and talk about. If it were truly positionless, just take your 5 best players and put them on the floor without regard to their positions.

I think the reference was to handling the press.  Majerus proved that you don't need an elite ball handler to break the press.  He beat it with proper positioning and passing.  When Majerus's guys executed his system to break the press, the ball didn't hit the floor until it was comfortably in our possession in the other team's half court.

  7. If Avila doesn’t want to come here, we’ll get another stretch big who’s in better shape and plays better defense.  We’ll be fine.  I’m convinced that it was Schertz who made Avila not Avila who made Schertz.  I think Robbie would continue to thrive here playing in the same system.  If he goes somewhere else, he’ll have a rude awakening when he runs into the high-pressure associated with a big time program and will have different results in a different system.

If Chris May sticks around we're very likely to miss the opportunities of the continuing changing landscape of college sports. More changes are coming and the SLU AD was not prepared for the telegraphed changes everyone saw coming the last few years. So why would we expect anything different now?

The ACC is about to implode setting off more conference changes. The SEC/B10 partnership may cause a schism with the NCAA and develop affect basketball only schools.  NLRB rulings and other court rulings may bring changes in athletes status.

Lacking leadership and vision makes it hard to navigate these complex situations. Lacking organizational skills makes it hard to run an organization effectively during times of change. The skill of sucking up to rich donors, raising funds and spending their money is just one part of the skillset needed to be a successful AD.

"Grumpy Old Men" is your attempt to minimize the importance of those criticizing the lack of effective leadership. Some of us want SLU to be relevant, we haven't been for the last 10 years directly due to May. One hire, a good X post and press conference, doesn't mean you can navigate the upcoming difficult changes. Concerns about these changes are at the fore front of schools with much more money/influence than SLU, see the B12 doing everything they can to stay relevant. Can we claim SLU and the A10 is doing the same?

The single biggest factor in SLU being successful in the new landscape and being able to take advantage of the changes and possibly getting into a better conference as a result is........WINNING.  Neither Chris May nor any other AD would be able to get SLU into a better situation if we continued down the road we have the past few years.  On the flip side, if Schertz gets us to Dayton level or better of sustained success, it will be that, and not any sort of skills that Chris May has or doesn't have that will get us into that better situation.  My point is that hiring the right coach and having the right facilities is what will get us to the next level much more so than any long term strategic plan to make that happen.

Huh? You're missing the point. Avila is a sophomore and next year will be a junior.  One more year of physical development, college weight room, trainers.  That's a reason for optimism that the ISU MVC Tournament 2nd place team could be better next year.  All 5 starters have another year of experience.

That's next season, not the season after. I'm not projecting them any further into the future.

Gotcha.  Along those lines, I would assume our nutrition specialists, strength and conditioning coach, and facilities will help all of that more than what ISU was able to offer him last year.

I understand but here's a reason for optimism.

Avila and Conwell were only Sophomores.

    Kent, Swope, Larry were Juniors.

Not 1 Senior in the starting 5.

If he gets the band back together, there's some room for improvement physically and technically.

In the day and age of free agency, saying guys are only juniors or sophomores has much less meaning.  If a kid comes here, we are only guaranteed to have him for one year.

On the last @Midtown Madness we did a very quick combination of who we'd keep from each roster and ended up with:

    Avila
    Swope
    Conwell
    Kent

    Larry
    Jimerson
    Thames
    Curcic
    Hughes
    Williford
    Nitu
    Birmingham
    Alderink

The last 4 are signed HS players, Williford to SLU and the other 3 to ISU.

This team would be very expensive but would win the A10. The incoming players and Curcic would be nice values to round out the roster and keep the budget somewhat realistic.

I guess this also means Jaden Schertz would walk on.

I also realize that we wouldn't have much positional depth behind Avila but this was an unplanned exercise.

Haven't had a chance to listen to the podcast yet, but that is exactly the list I would come up with.  I have a feeling that one or two of the ISU starters and one or two of the recruits might not come over.  I predict we have three spots to fill with either additional freshmen or additional transfers.

LHJ, shot 35% from 3, which is very average for a D1 combo guard. He was also a starter on one of the worst defensive teams in the country. I don't recall him shutting down anyone, and he didn't light up the steal stats, so I am not sold on the good defender narrative.

I could not like your post, so I had to do it this way.  Agree with everything you said.  I don't think that Hughes is as good defensively as the MBM narrative.  That being said, I also think he's a better three point shooter than he showed last year.  I think he's staying, so my hope is that he buys fully into Schertz's system, stops taking bad shots, and becomes a much better player.  I've said it many time before, Hughes elite skill is three point shooting.  That is what he has shown since high school.  Yet, he has moments, many of them last season, where he thinks he needs to be his dad.  If he just lets the three point opportunities come to him, as they will under Schertz's offense, we will like the results a lot better next year.

  13. The JGood and French years were fun.  Yuri was fun to watch and appreciate as well.  He would always get us optimistic with recruiting.  The A-10 tournament run and NCAa appearance was nice.  I also appreciated the way he was a non stop promoter of the program.

  14. I like that the national perception is that we are underachieving given our potential.

    ST. LOUIS

    Out : Travis Ford
SLU sacked Ford moments after the team's season ended in the A-10 Tournament. He was there eight seasons and went to one NCAA Tournament. Many in the business believe this program has been an underachiever vs. its potential for decades. With no hire yet, it's only fair to assume SLU is waiting on a coach whose season is still ongoing. Josh Schertz is the presumptive guy here.
