Reports that BVF is going away. No mention of brokering NIL in this interview or the Stu interview.

So, if they are going to be active in NIL, he missed a really key opportunity to hi-light their efforts to leverage NIL to attract athletes to SLU.

So it's an assumption based on a preponderance of the evidence.

Does anyone know of any ongoing SLU AD led NIL efforts beyond the t-shirt online store? Or any plans for SLU to support athelete NIL deals? Or any businesses that are approaching SLU for NIL moving forward?

I would be very interested to hear about any efforts.

The BVF is basically being absorbed into the AD.  Whatever it was doing will continue to be done.

If at any point the power conference schools are at a disadvantage to schools like SLU monetarily that is the point they leave the NCAA.

SLU should try an all of the above strategy,  NIL and revenue sharing. Ignoring one is not taking advantage of all available options.  Also helping facilitate NIL deals for athletes can help them avoid predatory practices.

Do you have any information that SLU is not doing an "all of the above" approach?  That's my issue.  Guys are handing out criticism based upon their own speculation.

I am not confident that they have a strong handle on things. That's based on historical facts regarding changes to the NCAA landscape. May and the AD have always been reactionary and not proactive and when they've reacted, they haven't reacted well.

I am not sure I understand his comments that this house settlement puts SLU in a position to compete at the "highest level". The only thing that really changes is that donations to NIL are now tax deductible. But that isn't unique to SLU.

All this does is allow direct payments, NIL still exists.  To think that's gone is short sighted. Schools need some apparatus to make deals between players and those willing to pay them for NIL.

Being in a metro area should be an advantage for NIL deals as there are more businesses.  However, it appears SLU thinks the direct payments are all it needs,  at least from these interviews.

Director May clueless as usual.  I'd feel so much better if there was mention of direct payment and a continuing effort to secure external NIL for deserving student athletes.  To not pursue both is to willfully not do what it takes to "compete at the highest levels."

I think that you guys are being far too negative about this one.  Regardless of your feelings about Chris May, the math may just be the math.  If we are able to revenue share now, just the receipts from ticket sales should give us a nice chunk to pay our players.  Since we don't have to pay football players, this may give us a big advantage over football schools.  Even if it is not an advantage, even if it just pulls us even with them, I'd be happy.  The tone that Chris May used in the article made be think he is very positive about what this means for our program in the future.  Your opinions about Chris May, valid or not, shouldn't have any impact on the idea that this could be a very big positive development for SLU.

I like this hire.  Veteran coach who has led her own programs and knows how to recruit.  She has a ton of overseas connections and also in the upper midwest.  Cleveland St has become one of the best low major programs in the country under her watch.  Recruited very successfully in the transfer portal.

Based upon the picture, she definitely has a love for hoops.

PD article of Timmermann's interview with AD May about revenue sharing. As everyone would suspect, the largest share of payment revenue with go to basketball.  Next in line for paying players would be men's and women's soccer.

Chris May is normally very reserved in his comments about the future.  Reading between the lines of his comments in this article, he sounds legitimately excited about what the new rules mean for SLU.  To me, it sounds like a confirmation about what we have been discussing above about schools without football having an advantage.  I still don't like the pay for play new system, but I will probably warm up to it if it results in us having a competitive edge in the sports we care about most (basketball and soccer).

  6. So, from what I am reading, I guess this sounds good for SLU.  Am I right?  It would seem to me that if we can spend between $3-5M under the revenue sharing system, we might be outspending power conference schools who are having to spend much more on football.  It seems to me that the Big East and the top few teams in the A-10 may have just been handed a reason for greater hope.

  7. Have to agree with Taj.  This is not to say that Schertz is not good at developing bigs, but I don't think the college basketball world believes that is his reputation, at least not yet.

Also, from what I read above, if this guy does turn out to be good and a contributor, he's gone next year.  Just the reality of college basketball right now.  I guess we just have to be happy with one year stints of quality play from some guys.

I have been an advocate of expansion as the most viable path to get more true mid majors into the Dance, BUT I'm concerned that what is being talked about now wouldn't go far enough and the fact that a P6 conference is driving the discussion is NOT going to be helpful to mid majors. I'm not sure why mid majors aren't beating the drum about this and making sure their voices are heard, and advocating that when the field expands, that some of those invitations to the Dance go to deserving mid majors, as opposed to a 10th place team in a P6 conference. In the end it may not matter, but mid majors should at least go down swinging before being rendered completely obsolete.

What amazes me is that the Committee is usually made up of more than 50% folks who are representatives of non P6 conferences.  Why those representatives go along with the shafting of their own is beyond me.

What I’d like to see is the St Louis area tourism board sponsor an annual event, MIZZOU vs SLU in the Enterprise Center, or maybe their own MTE. Bring in some tourist dollars and help SLU out with scheduling.  I’ll wish for a pony next. Oh well.

I've been saying this for years.  It should be the St. Louis Sports Commission that puts it on.  Doesn't have to include SLU or Mizzou or Illinois every year.  Just have it.  Kansas City has been doing an MTE like this for decades.

Either Duquesne or A10T in Pittsburgh is what I want to do next year.

Pittsburgh is very cool if you stay in the downtown area between the rivers.  Duquesne is easy to get to from there.

  11. My list (I count 17):

    1. Kiel Auditorium

    2. TWA Dome

    3. St. Louis Arena

    4. Kiel/Savvis/Scottrade/Enterprise

Not just a flat tire.  It also broke down according to the article.  Also had no air conditioning.  Kinda bush league for your first NCAA tournament.

It had no air conditioning during the time it was broken down.  If the bus isn't running, neither is the air conditioning.   I seriously doubt they had a bus that had no AC at all.

Anyone know what Gibson's plans are? Is he hoping to continue playing ball or ready to head to the office?

I spoke with him at the Billiken Golf Classic.  He told me that he is done with basketball, despite the fact that he would definitely have opportunities if he want to keep playing.  He plans on staying in the St. Louis area and its interviewing with companies now.

I didn't see that as a "shot at SLU" as much as reporting what preservationists were saying about SLU. Their quotes and impressions about SLU are pretty fair, given the history of its expansion in Midtown. Like it or not, SLU did get rid of a significant residential neighborhood. Since then, the school has torn down a lot of buildings for surface parking lots that go mostly unused. There's nothing even remotely out of bounds said about SLU in this brief article.

It was a shot at SLU.  Journalists do this all the time.  They will use someone else's words to convey a message that the journalist wants to make so that they can say that were just reporting facts.  This was an article about a new business going into a building and the writer of the article interjected someone else's quote to make the point the writer wanted to make.  Whether we agree or disagree about the sentiment, or not, it was an intentional shot at SLU by the writer.

Yes, I'd say so. And now he has a legit shot at a national title.

I'm not saying that you would be wrong, but are you saying that teams like Dayton and SLU do not have legit shot at a national title?

  16. Key phrase from the announcement:  "The event will take place between Nov. 25-28 and feature different pods and matchups, which are still TBD."

Sounded good at first, but now seeming less and less likely we will get a power conference team.

EDIT: looks like last year it was a combination of four team mini tournaments over two days and single game individual matchups.  It lasts several days, but the participants don't stay any more than two days.  It's a lot of teams that are in and out playing either one or two games.

  17. The Sharma signing reminds me a lot of Javon Bess.  Both are about the same size.  Both were at bigger programs that would have utilized them more had they stayed.  In 32 GP at his final season at Michigan State Bess had 31 FGs.  Sharma had 30 FGs in 29 GP in his season at Virginia.  Sharma was actually a much better 3PT and FT shooter than Bess in the final big program years.

I'm hoping Sharma does the same stuff for us that Bess did.
