It seems like a punch that connects is dealt with more severely than a punch that whiffs. I don't know if I agree with that methodology. The intent is the same, one punch lucky, the other less so.

I take over-achievers to mean that, compared to recruiting classes and past performances, these teams are stepping up their game. I wouldn't mind a six seed in that you play an 11. You might be able to beat an 11 even it you have jitters in the opening minutes.

Oddly enough, the radio feed on 101.1 was about three seconds behind the tv. Usually it is the other way around.

I can't argue for him getting court time, but he seems to be out of the mix until ???? I kind of feel bad for him in that he transferred from a (much) lesser program where he excelled to a program where he hasn't logged meaningful minutes in two years. I would not be surprised if the program is recruiting 'over' him by year's end. It is a good problem to have quality people on the bench. Ah, well.

Where will the Billikens be on Jan 1?
someoneelse replied to TVACH13's topic in Billikens.com Main Board
I think they will be in New Mexico, or maybe STL. -
I appreciate your analysis. I go to site called betfair.com. I can't bet on it, not that I would anyway. As opposed to giving a point spread, they do allow buyers and sellers of futures contracts to come together to settle on a fair price. They can bet on the spread, winning, points etc. Most college bb games are going to be rather under subscribed so a deep fluid market will be hard to find, if they are even on the board. On a related note, intrade.com does the same thing for political events. Will Obama get re-elected? (About 50%) Will Herman Cain be the nominee? (Even with his 'bubble', he never got above 10%.)

How predictive is the Pomeroy method? More predictive than the Vegas lines? Less?

I wondering how the JoePa defenders would feel if they, or their sons, were in the shower.

Annual Plea for SLU Football
someoneelse replied to Bay Area Billiken's topic in Billikens.com Main Board
As a Fordham grad, '91, I can say that adding football is not recommended. On such a small student body, it puts too many athletes on campus, diluting other aspects of college life. I went there when there were no scholarships, so they were students who happened to play football. Throw in scholarships and, well, it changes things. I recently went back for my 20 year reunion, and not one fine memory involved Jack Coffey Field. It just wasn't part of my campus life and I really enjoyed going to school in the Bronx. Signed, Someone who screamed 'FU' a lot in college. -
During Valvano's ten-year tenure as head coach at North Carolina State he gained a reputation for having miniscule graduation rates among his player as only 3 of his recruits ended up graduating from the University. http://hoopedia.nba.com/index.php?title=Jim_Valvano It could be worse.

As a Fordham grad, '91, New York is a pro sports town. Colleges can't get much ink. There are already two pro basketball teams, three hockey and two football to get the coverage. St. John's got it when they were very good, but that is about it. Fordham is also located in the Bronx, which would be similar to a so-so part of North County, not a great area and kind of far away from 'city center'. It takes real work and effort for people to get to the games, via train or automobile. Not much else to do on game night nearby. Campus a good college campus, but good places to eat are about a 15-20 minute walk away from the Rose Hill Gym (not a good gym, either). Who wants to do that on a winter night. I could go on and on. I root for Fordham, but a school's gotta know its limitations, if you know what I mean.

New US News college rankings are out.
someoneelse replied to STLfan's topic in Billikens.com Main Board
No, but I did work college radio, WFUV, 50,000 watts, and met him once. A pretty nice guy, from what I remember many, many years ago. -

As a Fordham grad, I can't believe the 56 rating, or GW's 51. There's more to live than basketball and Fordham proves that every year. -
Class 1A in Minnesota is pretty small. Doing very little research found a 1A school that has 200 kids total for the entire high school. I take the scoring stats and such about a 6'10" player as not that meaningful.

AP story on coaches revoking scholarships
someoneelse replied to a topic in Billikens.com Main Board
There was a scene in the movie 'Hoop Dreams' where the Marquette coach (Kevin O'Neill?) is meeting with Gates? and O'Neill says to Gates Marquette is offering a four year scholarship, and Gates' coach immediately says 'renewable' and the Marquette coach agrees. Make of that what you will. The movie came out in about 1995. While Gates' coach comes off as kind of a jerk, he did have experience with D1 players and looked out for Gates in this one respect. -
B. At 10-10, they would be .500. At 30-10, they are twenty wins over .500. I take games to be short hand for 'won games'. Some people would, some people wouldn't.

Not trying to stir the pot, but great work ethic/gym rat are sometimes code words for being white. Full disclosure--I did not click on the link so I don't know and I may be eating my words very soon.

They aren't, you are correct, but they do, and often. GMs should know that you don't know what you are getting with a 19 year old. You are drafting potential. It is easy to mock, say, Darko Milicic, but he is still in the league. Some others from that draft class are not.

Frank seems to have contacts in the men's bb program. Not to say that they are infallible, but that is probably where they are coming from.

Fordham, which has an opening, has an alum coaching at Robert Morris--two straight NCAA appearances. Mike Rice, class of '91. I knew him in school, not well, and he was an ok guy. His wife also graduated from Fordham same year. Don't know if they are still together. He is from Boardman, OH originally, a coach's son.
