I will put up Happy Joe's crust against anybody.

We talking OG Happy Joe's on Watson that has closed or the imposter out in St. Peters? And, yes, I know it is an national international (holy crap they have Happy Joe's in Egypt) chain, but I feel like the new one doesn't use the cornmeal in the crust and it's just not as good as the Watson one used to be.

Cam'Ron Fletcher just entered the portal. Would love to have him!! Also Davion Bradford and Mario McKinney Jr. are in the portal.

SLU could assemble an entire lineup of local guys that we really wanted at one point, but at this point probably don't want.  Lol.

Frank just said that Kyky Tandy will be visiting SLU in the near future.

FWIW Swope follows Tandy on Twitter.  Swope is from the Evansville, IN area which is about an hour away from Tandy's hometown of Hopkinsville, KY.  I can't find on Google if they played on the same AAU team or anything, but presumably they know each other.

He's not good offensively no matter the system. Great defender though.

I'm not on Trilly's discount, but don't know where the Roddie Anderson stuff is coming from.  Best I can tell, nothing on Twitter linking him to SLU and none of the coaches are following him.

That being said, I think adding a defensive minded guard makes a lot of sense with our current roster makeup.  We know that our 3 likely biggest minute guys (Avila, Swope, Gibson) are more offensive minded players.  Thames & Hughes profile as guys who could be good on defense, but that wasn't really the case last season when our team defense was awful.  I don't know about Dotzler or McCottry.  In any event, adding a guard who can play lock-down defense seems like it could be more beneficial than another scoring guard.

    No, not until last Monday.

We agree with you - it feels like a month ago. That's basically how we start the show, with that exact point.

Ha.  Yeah I haven't listened yet, but definitely feels longer ago than that.

"Swope to announce" makes it sound like it hasn't/hadn't happened yet.  Minor quibble / I just assumed it didn't get updated.  Carry on.

Ummm, I think you forgot to remove this point from the previous episode?  Didn't Swope announce a while ago?

One question; where did Caleb Love transfer to? AZ was listed in the top 25 but he was not listed as a starter. Curious is all. I don’t want him. Chemistry killer.

Love entered his name in the NBA draft.  I don't think he entered into the transfer portal & his tweet about the draft said he is maintaining his eligibility, but it seems like most expect him to go pro.

I've changed my view on Love.  He is super streaky and takes too many bad shots, but he would very likely wreak havoc in the A10 regardless.  I'd take him in a heartbeat.  He was a major contributor to a #2 seed who made the elite eight.  He gets a bad rap for UNC failing to meet expectations the year after his hot streak helped carry them on a miracle run to the finals.  I don't think he's a chemistry killer.

I like the SLU Alcindar name, it makes me chuckle. But it doesn't really work because Kareem didn't wear goggles when he went by Lew.

Yeah, this is my big quibble with it as well.  I still think it is the best SLU or St. Louis centric nickname, but it doesn't really sit right with me because of the historical inaccuracy.  I still like Cream Abdul-Jabbar the most.

Think bigger. Anyone worth minutes for us should be a bigger get than this guy.

Agreed.  If we got him, he'd have been like the 11th-13th guy for us.  Very few minutes, 1 year scholly for a guy who already knew Schertz system & can hit a 3 if you need that.  I'd love a team full of guys who are awesome, but that's not realistic.

  10. FYI - former Indiana State reserve Masen Miller is on his way to North Dakota State:

No indication that SLU was after him / only connection was that he played at Indiana State.  In very limited minutes (28 games, 7.6 mpg) and therefore limited attempts (37), he shot over 40% last year.  I thought he could have been a nice deep bench piece for us as a shooter / someone familiar with Schertz.

Love this guy on the roster. Athleticism; length. Can guard 3/4. Can be a smallish 4 in the A-10 who can also protect the rim some. Dalger was supposed to be like this but without the length and athleticism. But still, we saw the team with and without Dalger, and how much difference he made. Kind of like another Thames but a bit more proven.

I'm on board with all of this except the bolded part.  The team was dogsh*t both with and without Dalger.  He was not a good Division 1 player & didn't make much of a difference.  Dalger's last game was vs VCU on 1/19.  Our Kenpom afer that game was 199.  We also finished the year at 199.

Rebounders, Shooters and Rim Defenders/Shot Blockers

ISU took 50% of their FGA behind the arc.  On the roster today we have four 36% three point shooters and one 39% shooter.  Need another high 30's / low 40's.

With today's roster, I'm not seeing where the boards are coming from.  Avila 6.6 and Thames 3.7 lead the pack.  It would be nice to have someone who could average 8 or so.

The 45 total blocks last season from our current roster isn't enough.  Last season the Bills had 101 blocks, which wasn't sufficient.  Neither Thames (4) nor Hughes (3) showed much blocking the rim. Avila had 24 blocks, Jimerson 7, Casey 6, Swope 1 and Dotzler 0.

Why are you limiting the sample size on 3 point shooting to only last season?  Here are the career shooting numbers:

    Jimerson: 39.5%

    Swope: 38.4%

    Avila: 37.2%

    Hughes: 36.5%

    Thames (small sample): 35.1%

Toward the end of last season, Thames showed an ability to drive into the lane and then pull up over a big to hit a ten foot shot.  I hope Schertz sees that when reviewing film and encourages that aspect of his game.  If so, and if he improves his three point shooting, I think Thames could have a big breakout season.

I highly doubt Josh Schertz is going to encourage guys to shoot mid-range jumpers.

For reference, this is Indiana State's shot chart vs Utah in the NIT semi-finals:

No one on this forum knows the real numbers but our NIL pot has taken a hit with Jimerson, Avila and Swope signings.  How many big ticket players can we afford?  With the names of two potential recruits floating around this board, it appears we are working on the edges of the pot.

Players not high in their previous school's rotations, or not in the rotation at all, won't command six figure NIL packages.

This is small time thinking.  TheOne was on here saying 3-4 Indiana State starters plus Jimerson.  We only landed 2 Indiana State guys, so I take that as meaning we'd still have potential NIL funds for the right starting caliber players that the big fish are on board with.

Question...Would Avila have moved the needle for you a couple of years ago? How about Swope a couple of years ago...a 5' 10"  170lb player?  Trust the process.

Check out Ryan Conwell's stats and South Florida or Jayson's Kent's stats at Bradley.  We'd have been very underwhelmed to add those type of guys.

Coach Tillett just re-tweeted (is it proper to call it a re-tweet now that Twitter is X?  Did she re-X it?) Anyway, she repeated that a Billiken is on route.  Guess we’ll wait and see, three slots open between returning players and incoming freshmen.

Technically this was a separate tweet.  Not a re-tweet of the one from 4/13.  As far as I know there wasn’t any news about that one / who it was.  I’d assume this is a different player altogether, but who knows

Swope and Jimmer with Larry and Thames behind them is a winning collection of scoring 2/3 guards that should do well in the A10.   Avila and I guess Pikaar at the 4/5 with depth needing to come.

But where is the PG...this car needs a driver.   I wish Medley would have hung around. I know the thinking is now we can do better, hopefully that is true.

Either way this is a big get and Coach is off to a nice start.

Robbie led Indiana State in assist percentage last season.  I'm not super worried about a traditional PG in the Yuri or Medley mold.  Just need a guard or guard(s) who can shoot well and pass well.  Schertz isn't going to have one guy initiating the offense every time down.

Last season was tougher to stomach, and I was much more emotional about Billiken basketball in 2015-16.

Yeah.  I'd agree with this.  Crews final 2 season and Ford 1st season were objectively worse.  They all had fewer wins and lower KenPom raings.

    2014-15 - 11 wins, 289 KenPom

    2015-16 - 11 wins, 226 KenPom

    2016-17 - 12 wins, 273 KenPom

    2023-24 - 13 wins, 199 KenPom

However, this past season was devoid of 2 things those other awful years had going for them.  #1 we were still in the afterglow of the best 3 year run in program history (or at least recent history) and #2 we had more hope that better results were coming.  2014-15 we all knew would be a massive step back after Loe, Evans, Jett & McCall graduated.  We expected the young team to take some lumps, but could hope they'd improve.  2015-16 was still a young team & by the end we pretty much knew Crews was going to get canned & his replacement would be better.  2016-17 we had new optimism that Ford would bring in talent & win and we had a bunch of promising transfers sitting out (Bess, Henriquez, Foreman) plus our highest rated recruit in decades coming in (Goodwin).  This past season was 5 years removed from our most recent NCAA appearance, coming off one of the most disappointing years in recent memory in terms of expectations vs results, and there was substantial doubt about whether or not Ford would be fired / how much hope there could be for better results the following season.  It was an awful experience all around.  No afterglow, no hope of being competitive from the start and little/no hope that we were building toward anything for the future.
