I (and many others) have provided succinct answers to Roy. The fact that he doesn’t want to acknowledge them is his problem.

Not going to address abortion arguments because that is off topic, even for this thread.
I don’t believe I’ve exerted moral superiority, except perhaps for my original outburst (the “Fox news crap” post) 10 or so days ago.

this virus is not a hoax.

    the media isn’t overblowing things.
obama’s administration left a handbook for this.
    trump cut the pandemic team.
    trump cut the cdc budget.
trump’s team failed a pandemic test run.
trump sent 18 tons of PPE to China on feb 7.
our first responders our desperately short on PPE
trump and pence have consistently lied about the ability and proliferation of testing capacity.

trump lied about our preparation for this.
trump bragged about his press conf ratings today.

trump shut down flights from China (but not from anywhere else where Chinese nationals could have come to our country from).
trump has failed in every aspect in his response to this pandemic.

Since we're breaking rules with this thread, can we go back to posting pics of Oregon cheerleaders?

Again I would be shooting from the hip. The transmission rate may well be similar to that of the flu, the mortality is yet to be determined. The reason to say this is that every country, and even every  region of each country may have different transmission rates (R0) and mortality rates (IFR), based upon differences in medical care available, population density, prevalence of malnourishment, and similar factors. Of course health care infrastructure can be overwhelmed. This is easier to  do in rural areas where resources are scarce. One factor to prevent overwhelming the available local resources that I asssume is in use, perhaps erroneously, is the use of air evac. Most certainly the activation of the military will bring into play a vastly increased capability to transfer very sick patients to areas where resources are available.
I reviewed my prior post and added a link to  the latest issue of MMWR, again the information provided is fractional but numbers and articles are presented of a range of disorders every week allowing comparisons to be made. It may be hard to make sense of, but it does provide an overview of the  whole country and specific diseases.
I know it is difficult my friend, I know that very well. I also know that we all mean well for the people and the country. All the best and please continue your efforts to learn about this field.

Also, tonight trump moved the goal posts and said that if we can reduce deaths from the projected 2.2 million to 100-200 thousand then we have been successful. This is major league gaslighting.

He’s hoping for only 100-200 thousand deaths because he thinks that means he did a good job.  Let that sink in.

A lot of playing around with the word “prediction” here.  This isn’t like picking a bracket and the statements by Fauci and other are NOT “predictions” they are potential scenarios, based on certain assumptions and models that likely change daily since the data they are working with is so poor and incomplete.
The utter failure of the country to ramp up testing in January has everyone flying blind when they didn’t need to be.
That really makes no sense.  100,000 dead, while a tragedy not seen in decades, would be much better for the economy than a million dead.  To suggest we need to save nearly everyone or save no one is a false and ridiculous choice.

No one is saying that. What many are saying is that corona could overwhelm our health care infrastructure, which would result in far worse human and economic impacts than the seasonal flu. When is the last time the seasonal flu overwhelmed our system?

Roy, we all realize the economy is in the crapper. The question is - are we going to climb out, and get hit over the head with the toilet bowl lid before we exit the toilet.
What are your specific plans, Roy? What businesses do you want reopened, or do you want everything reopened? What trip points do you want for not reopening?
if we reopen at Easter, we have zero new PPE, no new respirators, all of the hot zones will see a diaspora of infected people to areas of lower concentrations, and suddenly it will be regional hospitals with small staffs, not giant teaching hospitals, that get flooded.
You never take an action without a viable contingency plan, and the resources to support that plan, in this type of disaster. This whole engagement is following in the tracks of the failed 2017 government pandemic exercise. Little PPE. No effective coordinated command structure. No satellite triage centers, so major hospitals were lost to housing only pandemic patients. Mobilization of military and VA resources were sporadic and slow.
The military isn’t doing much better itself. We just lost one of our nuclear aircraft carriers. The Teddy Roosevelt pulled in and parked at Guam, with over 30 sailors infected. It will be there with a skeleton crew for the reactor plants, but it is OOC for at least three weeks. And there are 5000 people to test. Other branches are experiencing similar situAtions.
