Not a good showing against WCU...for a wrap up of the WSU game see the end of the WSU spread thread....

As you will see below the report card took a big hit with 8 of 9 categories down...Does this mean we are a bad team...No...Our overall rating now is C...in fact, our offense is rated as C as well as our defense.  We are neither a good team nor a bad team....we are an average team. The verdict is still out on how we will do.  Over the next couple of weeks we will see what this team is made of.  In a recent interview Schertz talked about culture. He said culture doesn't transfer in, it has to be built. Since the beginning of the season I have talked about how the team needs to gel.  You can substitute the word gel for culture.  Schertz and I are talking about the same thing. A little gelling and getting a couple of more players back (Avila and Casey) could start to turn the ship around. We still have a lot of potential...will it be realized? ...stay tuned.

Game preview... Next up... Quinnipiac (D+ )... known for its political polling.  Unfortunately, that will not help them in basketball. Let's start with something simple. The Bobcats are one of the worst shooting teams in D1. (see report card below).  So we got this game, right?  Not so fast.  We should win this game BUT it is not a gimme.  Why would that be? Because Q plays D.  They are not a great defensive team but they are good enough to create some problems for us. We need to shoot at least average against them. Also they are not a good rebounding team BUT they get rebounds on offense....when you can't shoot there are balls flying everywhere.  We need to get our share of those.  Did I mention  that they can't shoot BUT they do have a couple players who can...Otieno from close in (also their leading rebounder) and Zimmerman their 3P shooter.  If we can get those rebounds on missed shots Otieno's pts will drop.  And if we guard Zimmerman he will pass on some of those shots.

It's time to take a look at the report card....

Keys to the game.... Shooting and TOs...If we do these 2 things right we win...If we do both of them...shoot average and protect the ball...we can win in a blowout. If we only do 1 of those 2 things...we win in the neighborhood of 7 pts....If we do neither then it is a close game. Also important  in this game are rebounds, especially when they are missing shots...NO SECOND CHANCES for them. And finally, no open looks for the Bobcats.  You certainly don't want to make it easy for a shooting challenged team.

WWN2D2W....Target  slash...48/ 35/ 75....Win the reb battle by 4...Win the TO battle...we are currently a D team in TOs...protect the ball....Hold Otieno and Zimmerman to a combined 15 pts....Go for the Shake Shake  (80+pts)

Bottom line...If we play our game...we can be like The Beatles...You'll  see nothing from the Mighty Quinn

They may be a shooting challenged team, but apparently not from the free throw stripe.  Looks like we need to be careful fouling them.

Very true...which is another key to the game...they can only shoot when no one is bothering them....bother them.

It will be up to the fans to bother them when they are shooting free throws.

The game tonight is against Quinnipac (rank 231 by TR). SLU (rank 155 by  TR) has better stats than Quinnipac. TR's Vegas line favors SLU to win by 8.5 pts with 3 stars of confidence. This is in line with the Wiz's. Looking forward to tonight, go Bills.

ESPN has SLU -8.5, after opening at -6.5, Total 154.5

Quinnipiac (3-3) is coached by former Hofstra and Fordham Coach Tom Pecora, is a member of the MAAC with the likes of Iona, St. Peter’s, Manhattan, Fairfield, Siena, etc. Pecora was able to get some big time recruits to Fordham. I liked him as Fordham’s Coach. His team beat St. John’s at Rose Hill Gym, but like other coaches, he didn’t win enough there. He was successful at Hofstra.

It's a sad state of affairs for us when our team is favored by less than 10 when playing Quinnipiac (yes, frickin Quinnipiac) at home.

-Q returns either 3 or 4 starters from last year's team that won their league regular season and has the pre-season POY who as of this writing has their knees intact, one of these players changed their last name during the off-season

-they have a lot of roster continuity

A nice win...

Let's start with a triple tip o' the cap  to ...Swope who had a career high 30 pts....Anya who had a double-double 12 pts  and 18 rebs and right now is #2 ITN in rebs and Jimerson who had 16 pts and moved ahead of Claggett to #2 on the all time scoring list.

Let's see what happened tonight ...bolded statements from the original post.

Shooting and TOs...If we do these 2 things right we win...We did and we did. The shooting was off a little bit... we were three 2s (bunnies) and 1 FT short of the target slash. But it didn't matter because our slash beat the Q slash across the board.  In TOs, we beat them 15-10. Those extra 5 TOs led to this stat...11 pts off TOs  for The Bills . Q only had 4 pts off TOs...This 7 pt difference was the extra 7 pts on the spread. Had we made the target slash that would have been another 7 pts for a 21 pt win.  I will take the 14 pt victory.

they get rebounds on offense....when you can't shoot there are balls flying everywhere.  We need to get our share of those...We did.  Q had 12 Off rebs...we had 37 Def rebs capturing over 3/4 of the rebs...this cut down on the Q scoring...A lot of this was the result of Anya's effort.

Go for the Shake Shake  (80+pts)...We did

If we play our game...we can be like The Beatles...You'll  see nothing from the Mighty Quinn...Queue the music

Contrary to my usual, I bet the Bills.  Got a double win last night.  Spread was the 8.5.

Bought -6.5 pre-Avila news.  He moved the spread 2-3 points which is crazy
