I think what you meant to say is the player went down in the box to draw the foul. I think I could have stayed up balancing on 1 leg with both arms tied behind my back.

The foul on Seth vs the keeper was a terrible call Seth jumps moving just slightly parallel to the goal. The keeper jumps 3 feet forward into Seth. 100% contact created by Keeper. keeper drops ball, Seth buries the rebound. Called back for foul.

Both of those calls are lazy and poor officiating

Admittedly I did not get to focus on the game live, but there was also a late yellow card on Leatherman that I thought was just ridiculous.

Lipscomb Bisons:

They play a roughly similar style as Portland, with a little bit more size. They push pace, play their outside backs higher. They will play both a 4-2-3-1 and a 4-1-4-1 depending on the situation within a game.

They still have Javanne Smith up top as their pace forward. He’s as dangerous as ever in space, and on the ball dribble runs. He aggressively will seek to draw PK’s inside the 18, so if you have to foul him it has to be outside the 18.

Smith works well in combination play, especially with Toronto Freshman Josiah Green on the wing. Lots of pace. They put a lot of pressure on defenses. And German Freshman Dan Karsten is their effective target player in their attack. He can finish. Strong transition team. Overlapping runs, switching fields.

They have had some turnover issues in back. Macready lost his spot. They have been going with York and Hurt in the middle. They are vulnerable to both high pressure. Undisciplined at times, prone to fouling in their own half, allowing dangerous set pieces. Wide service. Not a great shot blocking team up the middle. Rodriguez isn’t the biggest keeper, but he’s athletic and he has experience.

Very experienced, veteran team that has made 3 straight NCAA tourneys. Likely to see half a dozen 5th year players or Seniors. A mix of International players, transfers, and a few local regional players.

Opportunity for SLU to continue with the new 4-2-3-1 formation from the Portland game, with Barnett in the middle. Double the wings and Smith. Get transition and set pieces in dangerous spots.

SLU 2 Lipscomb 2
……………..
Lipscomb had 2 players drafted in the top 10 of this past year’s MLS Draft. Senior Tyrese Spicer went number 1 overall to Toronto, and Sophomore Malachi Jones went number 8 to New York City.
……………….
For those wondering why teams need a 2nd 11, 6 Lipscomb players played their most minutes of the year off of the bench. A 7th played his most in half a dozen games. Lipscomb’s best scorer and best attacking player, missed the game entirely, Javanne Smith. Lipscomb’s reserve players played better than their starters.
………..:……
SLU continued with the new 4-2-3-1 formation, as expected, and that was very effective vs the offensive minded teams of Portland and Lipscomb.. For a SLU team that has struggled at times generating offense against defensive opponents, these 2 attacking opponents offered an opportunity for SLU to use their opponent’s pace and attacking prowess to SLU’s offensive advantage. 2 goals was good enough vs Portland because SLU’s defense was rock solid, no mistakes. 2 wasn’t good enough vs Lipscomb as a defensive mistake and bad call cost a couple of soft goals. Both games could have had SLU add a 3rd or 4th which is sometimes needed against high powered teams.
……………..
SLU started the game well, scored an early goal, created a lot of opportunities to tack on to the 1-0 lead but didn’t. There was a 15 minute stretch late first half and early 2nd half that SLU faded, but for roughly 75 minutes the game is what SLU wanted.
…………….
1st half
…………..
Offsides goal. Long throw up the line and Townsend switched fields to Seth who played a through ball to Carlos, and he squared it to Wrobel for the goal, but Wrobel left a little too early. Had one there. Good call.
…………..
But a minute later, an Abonnel long ball flicked on by Wrobel to Seth behind the defense who laid it off to Lara for the goal. Aerial target with size, speed and pace behind the defense. Good start. 7th minute. 1-0. SLU almost scored on the exact same play from Floriani to Wrobel to Seth to Lara about 8 minutes later.
…………….
A minute later. Lara wide run back to Barnett, back post cross for Wrobel from the 8 but his header didn’t have enough on it.
……………
Lipscomb moved Karsten to the wing for the 1st half and it seemed like an odd choice as he’s an effective target player in the middle. Lipscomb made the adjustment later with Davis and Jones giving them lots of pace wide.
………….
SLU had 2 more high level mid half chances, forced a few turnovers in Lipscomb’s 3rd. Tanner’s header from Seth was knocked away by the defender. Carlos won a free kick, Townsend service to Tanner and Rodriguez made a great save. Wrobel’a rebounder was over the bar. Not the biggest keeper but he has quick reflexes and he’s athletic.
………………
There were several times in both halves where SLU had good transition numbers, but they couldn’t get enough shots off at the top of the 18. And the final ball in space inside of 35 yards wasn’t sharp enough in tight spaces. There were also a few too many times SLU played the ball all the way back to regroup and restart when it wasn’t necessary.
………………
First 35 minutes were good. Chances for a multi goal lead. Faded the final 10 minutes. Lipscomb found a few things with its reserve players on the wings with Davis and Jones later in the half but mostly non threatening.
………….
Halftime
………….
Redmon has missed a few games at left back and he tried to play to start the 2nd half but he couldn’t go. Dougherty has done well there in his absence. But Redmon’s pace and ability to get forward is missed.
………….
Early 2nd half Lipscomb goal. Swung wide left of the box for Colombo, who is left footed. He hit a heavy service with pace that Abonnel chose to punch out instead of scoop. And it went right off of Bryan and in for 1-1. Tough one there. Slow start to the 2nd for about 5-7 minutes before SLU took control again.
…………….
SLU won plenty of set pieces in good areas of the field but they weren't super dangerous with them. And at times they couldn’t connect in the final 35 when Lipscomb was able to have numbers in back. Seth made a good diagonal run v Colombo and his service to Lara took another great save from Rodriguez from 6 yards. Abonnel did the same shortly after on a corner header from Davis at point blank range.
…………..,
SLU kept overloading and pinching the middle, so Colombo, Lipscomb’s left back kept playing higher and getting wide making runs. And eventually it led to another goal. Nice work from to win a 50/50 ball middle of the field and play it wide to Colombo. 4 Billikens could have cut him off at the 18, but he was able to get deeper and draw a PK foul. It was a bad call. It wasn’t a PK. But SLU shouldn’t have been in that position. The mindset of calling a PK needs to be did the infraction prevent a goal, or was it egregious. etc….this was an arms extended by Lopes from behind, but a dive by a defensive player at the end  of a long run. 2-1. PK good.
……………
Another kick save from 4 yards out from Rodriguez on Lara. SLU had been playing a 4-1-3-2 since going down a goal. Carlos kept the pressure.
…………..
Lara again left side of the box cross grabbed by Rodriguez as Tanner knocked it out at the same time. Tanner scored the loose ball but Ref said no, and called a foul.
……………
SLU finally did something wanted in other game situations, move Floriani up top and play 3 in the back. Townsend made a nice pass up the middle to Max. He turned and got past Medina. He grounded a nice through ball for Lara for the 2-2 goal. At that point SLU was playing a 3-1-4-2, and that was great.
……………
SLU switched back to the 4-2-3-1 after that for the final 7 minutes and they put on heavy pressure but couldn’t get the game winner.
……………
Tough result. A soft goal and a PK given up. Many chances to extend the lead in the first half. And many more in the 2nd to tie it sooner and win it.
……………
70-75 good strong minutes. Last 10 of first half and first 5 plus of the 2nd weren’t as good. Go ahead Lipscomb goal was against the run of play.
…………..
As did Portland, Lipscomb’s style of play is conducive to playing more aggressively with formations, personnel, tactics. It was a 4-2 type of game and opponent.

This sure feels like a .500 kind of team to me, which is disappointing.  Its hard to see them making a dominant run in the conference that looks like it has several competitive teams playing better right now. Really needed to win last night.  Oh well, it would be nice to beat the hell out of LaSalle in Philly this weekend

I felt Abonnel could have and should have handled the cross he punched out. Just a dangerous place to punch a low ball. Too crowded and too much of a chance to be deflected which is exactly what happened.

I’ve said for awhile SLU makes poor decisions on when to turn and play forward, when to play it long and direct or clear, and when to drop it back and re start. Watching the game I can point to more than a dozen times where we just boot the ball to no man’s land just to defend again or where we play direct to no one and give up possession. All times where we had time and space to settle and make a better decision. Plenty of times like you said where we have space and/or numbers to play forward and we lay it all the way back to restart. Better decisions need to be made on when to just be patient and retain possession, play it back to restart, or to play a 1 or 2 line direct ball forward.

Looks like LaSalle is going with 3 defensive center backs, 2 wingbacks. They have been really holding back, filling the defensive box, waiting for a SLU mistake to move forward. This announcer really believes that long, silent pauses are the way to go in announcing the game. Also only 1 camera fix mounted at midfield swiveling left and right does not make for an exciting broadcast.

0-0 at halftime. SLU has retained possession, gotten more shots 8-3, generated more corner kicks, and prevented any shots on goal, but just couldn’t put it in. In other words, started just like many SLU men’s games the past few years. What I don’t love about this script is we usually give up a bad goal on a turnover, the other team parks the bus on us, and we either lose or get lucky to tie. Hopefully we write a new script for the game.

0-0 draw, tough to watch, both from the announcer inspired by the sound of silence and the single camera technically and the way the game played out. Expect to see a lot of Billiken opponents running out the 3 center backs and stuffing the box defensively until SLU proves they break through that formation. Not sure what the “discussion” between the teams was at the end of the game, but it looked like their might be some extracurricular activities going on after the game, the ref drew his red card on someone, but they didn’t say who it was on, could have been anyone on both teams. They cut from the game quickly, so I have no idea how that ended. Apparently they need to roll the broadcast booth cart back to wherever they store it between games.

Floriani received a red card in 82nd minute, a second red card was issued at the end of the game. The box score says STL team, so I assume it was one of the coaches.

Yeah, there was a scrum after the game ended, looked like it was getting testy, but they cut from it before anything was announced. If it was only a red card on a SLU coach and not a player I’ll take it. There was no way to tell from the TV feed what was going on or who was doing what.

SLU 0 La Salle 0

5-3-2 for La Salle
4-4-2 for SLU.

SLU switched to a 4-2-3-1 during the game. They tried Torres and Sullivan up top with Wrobel as pace forwards. And they tried Holloway in the middle of the midfield with the 4–2-3-1. Lara has been more effective on the wing this season. And SLU hasn’t been able to find a long term solution to pair with Wrobel when playing 2 forwards.

After a 10 plus minute barrage by SLU to open the game, La Salle played much deeper the rest of the games and they essentially played a back 8 behind the ball.

Maher was unavailable. Easton was in at Center Back. His long throws were once again a factor. Lots and lots of long throws into the 18.

In the first 10 minutes alone, Wrobel headed it just off of the post from Leatherman. Lars hit the cross bar twice, and he had a shot from the left side from 15 saved. And Axel was robbed from 12 yards right in front of goal. Wrobel flicked a corner header, save and rebound blocked Hadn’t even played 10 minutes.

SLU goal called back in the 25th minute. Long throw in from Easton, near post double header goal from Floriani to wrobel. Waved off.

27th minute. One of many SLU set pieces. Seth service to Wrobel, headed just wide.

35th minute. Almost an own goal as the La Salle defender headed into his own top corner. Leaping last second save. Lots and lots of set piece opportunities.

Another example of why you meed a 2nd 11. Redmon injured a few games back at left back. Dougherty plays well in his absence. Dougherty gets injured v La Salle. Gershon Henry stepped in and the talented Freshman played well.

55th minute. Wrobel flick on header off of an Easton throw in. Sellers fanned on the open look from 12.

56th minute. Wrobel received target oass edge of middle of the 18. Lays it back to Sellers, wide to Tanner, lay off to Henry. Low cross to Wrobel for tap in goal. Sliding save to knock it off of the line.

SLU had one of many free kicks just outside the La Salle 18. 2nd ball played in by Henry. Floriani slid to poke it in the goal, middle of the box. but he fouled the defender. He unfortunately already received a yellow card

16 shots. 14 corners 11 free kicks, most from in close. A plethora of Easton thrown ins as well. Much of the game was played in and near the La Salle 18, as opposed to even midfield. Have to convert. Any of many early chances go in and La Salle would have had to change how they play.

SLU 2 Loyola Chicago 1

Redmon, Maher, Barnett, were all out with injuries. Floriani served his 1 game red card suspension. It was a 2nd 11 win.

4-2-3-1 for SLU
3-5-2 and 3-6-1 for Loyola

Front foot start for SLU. Strong game overall.

Gershon Henry showed why he was one of the top recruits in the country. Very complete two way game at left back. Very strong outside back play for SLU on both sides of the field.

Dougherty played center back at Dallas Solar, so he was comfortable playing there. Highly active minutes at center midfield for Nate Ward who assisted on a goal, drew a PK for another, and a 3rd shot beat the keeper but it was cleared off of the back line. And he was quick to give back when play became chippy at times.

SLU had several chances to extend the 2-0 lead, many of which were dangerous. Breaking down the Loyola defense was good. Pace, targets, switching fields, combination play, overlapping runs, moving the defense much of the game. Needed to play more to extend to 3, vs protect 2 in the 2nd

Big one Tuesday vs top 10 RPI Charlotte.

Charlotte 49ers

Kevin Langan has made 10 NCAA Tourneys in his 12 seasons as Head Coach. Last season they lost in the 2nd round to eventual NCAA Champion Clemson. Langan was an assistant on the 2011 Charlotte team that reached the NCAA Title game. They return many players from that team.

Charlotte plays a 4-4-2. But they move their Japanese Forward Ogata behind their other big size, target forward. And they have a few of those. That will look at times more like a 4-2-3-1. But it’s a base 4-4-2. Ogata moving in between central attacking midfield and forward. They really like to play through him. Charlotte also has a lot of depth all over. They can insert 2nd 11 players and not miss a beat. They play roughly similar to SLU.

Former Billiken, and Charlotte native Danielle Moore, is a 2 year starter at left back for the 49ers.

Lots of experience at center back, where Pilcher and Laursen are very solid. Forana gives them depth. There is an opportunity for some wide pace runs for SLU’s wings on the outside. Spread them out. Their back 6 plays pretty compact. Consistent personnel up the middle, keeper, center backs, defensive midfielders, and Ogata. They have depth at wing and up top. They’ll play a few big target forwards up top , Jauk, Arsvoll. at 6’5 and 6’4. Even Larsen.

Charlotte is pretty solid in all phases, and they do well against a variety of styles. They don’t make many mistakes. Richardson gives them some pace on the wings, but their strength is up the middle. Good at working through the back 6 to Ogata and switching field s with diagonal balls. They’ll make you pay if you turn it over up the middle.

Big opportunity for SLU to get a result against a good top 10 team.

I don’t know what the record is for most passes completed between centerbacks and goalies by both teams combined in a single game, but whatever the record is, it is in danger of being broken tonight if both teams keep playing this way. Neither goalie has a save, 2 shots and 2 CKs for SLU, 1 shot 1 corner for NC Charlotte.

0-0 tie. The Billikens generated a lot more chances when they opened up a little more, would have liked to see that all game. Still, a tie against a highly rated opponent is a good result. Back to conference play.

Schulte's Columbus Crew has a match on October 15, the day of the Panama friendly.  They are in a tight race with arch rival Cincinnati for second place in the Supporter's Shield.  Finish in the Shield standings dictates home pitch for the playoffs.  There are two matches before the Cincy match, but it will be interesting to see if releases their #1 GK for a friendly if the Cincy match is vital to their finish.

Doesn’t the national team let a club know if a player is going to be selected before the roster is announced?
