Both of those calls are lazy and poor officiating Admittedly I did not get to focus on the game live, but there was also a late yellow card on Leatherman that I thought was just ridiculous. PK good. …………… Another kick save from 4 yards out from Rodriguez on Lara. SLU had been playing a 4-1-3-2 since going down a goal. Carlos kept the pressure. ………….. Lara again left side of the box cross grabbed by Rodriguez as Tanner knocked it out at the same time. Tanner scored the loose ball but Ref said no, and called a foul. …………… SLU finally did something wanted in other game situations, move Floriani up top and play 3 in the back. Townsend made a nice pass up the middle to Max. He turned and got past Medina. He grounded a nice through ball for Lara for the 2-2 goal. At that point SLU was playing a 3-1-4-2, and that was great. …………… SLU switched back to the 4-2-3-1 after that for the final 7 minutes and they put on heavy pressure but couldn’t get the game winner. …………… Tough result. A soft goal and a PK given up. Many chances to extend the lead in the first half. And many more in the 2nd to tie it sooner and win it. …………… 70-75 good strong minutes. Last 10 of first half and first 5 plus of the 2nd weren’t as good. Go ahead Lipscomb goal was against the run of play. ………….. As did Portland, Lipscomb’s style of play is conducive to playing more aggressively with formations, personnel, tactics. It was a 4-2 type of game and opponent. …………… I felt Abonnel could have and should have handled the cross he punched out. Just a dangerous place to punch a low ball. Too crowded and too much of a chance to be deflected which is exactly what happened. I’ve said for awhile SLU makes poor decisions on when to turn and play forward, when to play it long and direct or clear, and when to drop it back and re start. Watching the game I can point to more than a dozen times where we just boot the ball to no man’s land just to defend again or where we play direct to no one and give up possession. All times where we had time and space to settle and make a better decision. Plenty of times like you said where we have space and/or numbers to play forward and we lay it all the way back to restart. They have been really holding back, filling the defensive box, waiting for a SLU mistake to move forward. This announcer really believes that long, silent pauses are the way to go in announcing the game. In other words, started just like many SLU men’s games the past few years. What I don’t love about this script is we usually give up a bad goal on a turnover, the other team parks the bus on us, and we either lose or get lucky to tie. Not sure what the “discussion” between the teams was at the end of the game, but it looked like their might be some extracurricular activities going on after the game, the ref drew his red card on someone, but they didn’t say who it was on, could have been anyone on both teams. They cut from the game quickly, so I have no idea how that ended. Apparently they need to roll the broadcast booth cart back to wherever they store it between games. Floriani received a red card in 82nd minute, a second red card was issued at the end of the game. The box score says STL team, so I assume it was one of the coaches. If it was only a red card on a SLU coach and not a player I’ll take it. There was no way to tell from the TV feed what was going on or who was doing what. They tried Torres and Sullivan up top with Wrobel as pace forwards. And they tried Holloway in the middle of the midfield with the 4–2-3-1. Lara has been more effective on the wing this season. And SLU hasn’t been able to find a long term solution to pair with Wrobel when playing 2 forwards. After a 10 plus minute barrage by SLU to open the game, La Salle played much deeper the rest of the games and they essentially played a back 8 behind the ball. Maher was unavailable. Easton was in at Center Back. His long throws were once again a factor. Lots and lots of long throws into the 18. In the first 10 minutes alone, Wrobel headed it just off of the post from Leatherman. Lars hit the cross bar twice, and he had a shot from the left side from 15 saved. And Axel was robbed from 12 yards right in front of goal. Wrobel flicked a corner header, save and rebound blocked Hadn’t even played 10 minutes. SLU goal called back in the 25th minute. Long throw in from Easton, near post double header goal from Floriani to wrobel. Waved off. 27th minute. One of many SLU set pieces. Seth service to Wrobel, headed just wide. 35th minute. Almost an own goal as the La Salle defender headed into his own top corner. Leaping last second save. Lots and lots of set piece opportunities. Another example of why you meed a 2nd 11. Lays it back to Sellers, wide to Tanner, lay off to Henry. Low cross to Wrobel for tap in goal. Sliding save to knock it off of the line. SLU had one of many free kicks just outside the La Salle 18. 2nd ball played in by Henry. Floriani slid to poke it in the goal, middle of the box. but he fouled the defender. He unfortunately already received a yellow card 16 shots. 14 corners 11 free kicks, most from in close. A plethora of Easton thrown ins as well. Much of the game was played in and near the La Salle 18, as opposed to even midfield. Have to convert. courtside Posted September 30 Share Posted September 30 SLU 2 Loyola Chicago 1 Redmon, Maher, Barnett, were all out with injuries. Floriani served his 1 game red card suspension. It was a 2nd 11 win. 4-2-3-1 for SLU 3-5-2 and 3-6-1 for Loyola Front foot start for SLU. Strong game overall. Gershon Henry showed why he was one of the top recruits in the country. Very complete two way game at left back. Very strong outside back play for SLU on both sides of the field. Dougherty played center back at Dallas Solar, so he was comfortable playing there. Highly active minutes at center midfield for Nate Ward who assisted on a goal, drew a PK for another, and a 3rd shot beat the keeper but it was cleared off of the back line. And he was quick to give back when play became chippy at times. SLU had several chances to extend the 2-0 lead, many of which were dangerous. Breaking down the Loyola defense was good. Pace, targets, switching fields, combination play, overlapping runs, moving the defense much of the game. courtside Posted October 1 Share Posted October 1 Charlotte 49ers Kevin Langan has made 10 NCAA Tourneys in his 12 seasons as Head Coach. Last season they lost in the 2nd round to eventual NCAA Champion Clemson. Langan was an assistant on the 2011 Charlotte team that reached the NCAA Title game. They return many players from that team. Charlotte plays a 4-4-2. But they move their Japanese Forward Ogata behind their other big size, target forward. And they have a few of those. That will look at times more like a 4-2-3-1. But it’s a base 4-4-2. Ogata moving in between central attacking midfield and forward. They really like to play through him. Charlotte also has a lot of depth all over. They can insert 2nd 11 players and not miss a beat.They play roughly similar to SLU. Former Billiken, and Charlotte native Danielle Moore, is a 2 year starter at left back for the 49ers. Lots of experience at center back, where Pilcher and Laursen are very solid. Forana gives them depth. There is an opportunity for some wide pace runs for SLU’s wings on the outside. Spread them out. Their back 6 plays pretty compact. Consistent personnel up the middle, keeper, center backs, defensive midfielders, and Ogata. They have depth at wing and up top. They’ll play a few big target forwards up top , Jauk, Arsvoll. at 6’5 and 6’4. Even Larsen. Charlotte is pretty solid in all phases, and they do well against a variety of styles. They don’t make many mistakes. Richardson gives them some pace on the wings, but their strength is up the middle. Good at working through the back 6 to Ogata and switching field s with diagonal balls. They’ll make you pay if you turn it over up the middle.
