Billiken Rich
Is there really a broadcast if no one can tune into the station? As long as it's before dusk when they have to screw in the lightbulb at the top of the tower you should be able to get 1380 throughout most of the neighborhood surrounding the station...... The radio broadcast will air on 1380 AM, since 101 ESPN has a programming conflict. As always, Billiken Hall of Famer Bob Ramsey will provide the play-by-play, while St. Louis American Sports Editor Earl Austin Jr. handles the analysis. SLU will travel to Corpus Christi, Texas, for the final two games of the tournament over Thanksgiving. The Billikens rallied for a 69-56 victory over Indiana State last Tuesday in Terre Haute. SLU fell behind 10-0 from the get-go and trailed by as much as 12 in the first half, but rallied to take a one-point lead into halftime. The second half saw the Billiken freshmen step up – scoring 21 straight Billiken points – as SLU cruised to the 13-point win. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is coming off a 78-62 loss at Georgetown last Tuesday. The game was tied at halftime, but the Hoyas outscored the Islanders 44-28 in the second half. The Billikens are 88-20 in seven seasons at Chaifetz Arena. SLU is 47-6 on its home floor the last four seasons. Saint Louis has advanced to the NCAA Tournament the last three years, a school record. Additionally, the Billikens are one of 10 programs in the nation that have advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament in each of the last three seasons. Saint Louis climbed as high as No. 8 in the national polls last season. The Billikens (27-7) were No. 25 in both the USA Today coaches’ poll and AP Top 25 final poll. SLU finished No. 24 in the final NCAA RPI. All 12 available scholarship players (minus the injured Grandy Glaze) have played early and often for the Billikens in each of the first two games. Junior guard Austin McBroom, who poured in a career-high 24 points in the opener vs. Southern Illinois, leads the team with 14.5 ppg. Junior guard Ash Yacoubou scores 13.5 ppg and brings down a team-best 7.0 rpg. Billiken head coach Jim Crews is in his third season at the helm. The back-to-back A-10 Coach of the Year is 57-14 in three seasons at Saint Louis, 411-362 in 27 years overall. RECAPPING THE LAST GAME Saint Louis overcame an early deficit and posted a 69-56 victory over Indiana State last Tuesday at the Hulman Center. It was the second win in a row for the Billikens against a Missouri Valley Conference team. SLU will face Wichita State of the MVC on Dec. 2 and could play Bradley next week in the Corpus Christi Coastal Classic. SLU improved to 2-0 with the victory. The Billikens fell behind 10-0 at the start and trailed by as many as 12 later in the first half, but free-throw shooting and defense helped the Billikens claw back and complete the come-from-behind victory. Once again, the Billikens utilized a 12-man rotation, with all players playing double-digit minutes. The Billiken freshmen again played a key role, scoring 21 straight points for SLU at a crucial point midway through the second half. Junior Ash Yacoubou led the Billikens with 15 points, thanks in part to a 7-of-9 performance from the stripe. Freshman Milik Yarbrough scored 11, while freshman Marcus Bartley posted 10. Sophomore Mike Crawford added eight points for the Billikens. SPEED LIMIT 60 The Billikens have held their first two opponents to fewer than 60 points for the first time since the 2011-12 season. The Billikens have won 62 games in a row while holding their opponents to 60 or fewer points. The last time the Billikens lost while giving up 60 or fewer points was Jan 29, 2011, a 52-46 defeat at George Washington. THE BILLIKEN SIX As expected, the Billikens’ six freshmen have played an integral role in SLU’s first two outings. All six have seen playing time early and often. Against Southern Illinois, all had entered the game by the 12:57 mark of the first half. At Indiana State, all were in the lineup midway through the first half. At Indiana State, it was the Billiken freshmen who paved the way for the victory. With 11:46 remaining, the Billikens were trailing by one. The SLU freshmen would go on to score the next 21 Billiken points to give SLU a double-digit lead. SCORING DISTRIBUTION BY CLASS Here is a look at the Billikens’ scoring distribution, by class: • FRESHMEN | 49 points | 37% of scoring • SOPHOMORES | 21 points | 21% of scoring • JUNIORS | 56 points | 43% of scoring • SENIORS | 5 points | 4% of scoring One interesting storyline to follow this year will be how this year’s freshman class scoring distribution compares to that of last year’s seniors. In 2010-11, the Billiken freshman class of Dwayne Evans, Jordair Jett, Mike McCall Jr. and Rob Loe accounted for 52 percent of the team’s scoring. SHARP FROM THE LINE Against Indiana State on Tuesday, the Billikens went 13 minutes without recording a field goal. However, thanks to clutch free throw shooting, the Billikens kept their lead and posted the eventual victory. Mike Crawford hit the first Billiken free throw of the stretch at the 3:39 mark of the opening half. SLU would go on to make 17-of-20 from the line until Milik Yarbrough’s dunk at the 10:57 mark ended the field goal drought. The Billikens are fourth in the Atlantic 10 Conference in the early going with a 72.1 percent shooting clip from the line. BILLIKENS TO CELEBRATE ANNIVERSARY SEASON This season marks the 100th anniversary of Billiken Basketball, and the 99th season. The Billikens did not compete in 1943-44 due to World War II. There will be several special events and promotions this season to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Billiken Basketball, including an All-Century Team unveiling later this year. Fans will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite players via online balloting. The Billikens’ first game ever recorded was Jan. 14, 1915, against Company E. The Billikens play Duquesne exactly 100 years later on Jan. 14, 2015, at Chaifetz Arena. THIS DATE IN HISTORY Saint Louis is 2-4 all-time on Nov. 23. Last season on Nov. 23, the Billikens defeated Bowling Green 74-47 thanks in part to Tanner Lancona’s then-career high 12 points. The Billikens’ other win on Nov. 23 came during the Rick Majerus era, a 78-50 victory over Tennessee State in 2010. NCAA TOURNAMENT WINNERS Saint Louis is one of 10 programs in the nation that have advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament in each of the last three years. The others are: • Creighton • Florida • Gonzaga • Iowa State • Kansas • Louisville • Michigan State • North Carolina • Syracuse ALL-TIME WINNERS Saint Louis’ five seniors from last year (Jake Barnett, Dwayne Evans, Jordair Jett, Rob Loe and Mike McCall Jr.) accumulated 93 wins during their careers, making them the winningest class in school history. SLU’s current seniors, Grandy Glaze and John Manning, have 83 wins in their three seasons. That total is fifth in school history for most wins by a four-year class. HOME SWEET CHAIFETZ The Billikens are in their seventh season at Chaifetz Arena. SLU has an all-time record of 88-20 on its home floor. SLU is 47-6 the last four seasons in the 10,600-seat arena, including a 14-3 mark last season. CREWS IN THIRD YEAR Back-to-back A-10 Coach of the Year Jim Crews is in his third season as the Billikens’ head coach. He is 57-14 in two years at Saint Louis, 411-362 in 27 years overall. Crews was tabbed the 2012-13 UPS NABC Division I Coach of the Year, Sporting News’ National Coach of the Year and the A-10 Coach of the Year. He was a finalist for the Naismith Coach of the Year award. He has been a part of 16 NCAA Tournaments as a player, assistant coach and head coach. Crews played on Indiana’s 1976 national championship team and also won a title as an assistant coach in 1981. SCOUTING TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI Texas A&M-Corpus Christi enters Sunday’s game 1-1. Last season, the Islanders finished 18-16 overall and 14-4 in the Southland Conference. The Islanders are coming off a 78-62 loss to Georgetown Nov. 18 in Washington, D.C. AMCC led by as much as six in the first half and the game was tied at halftime, but the Hoyas outscored the Islanders 44-28 in the second half to post the victory. Bryce Douvier scored a team-high 16 points for AMCC. For the season, Douvier leads the way with 17 ppg and 6.5 rpg. John Jordan follows with 16 ppg, while Rashawn Thomas has pumped in 12 ppg. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has an experienced roster with two seniors and seven juniors on the squad. Jordan, a preseason first-team All-Southland selection, is 10 assists away from becoming the Islanders’ all-time leader. Thomas was also a preseason All-Southland pick after averaging 11.1 ppg and 5.7 rpg last season as a freshman. Brandon Pye led the Southland Conference in 3-point field goal percentage last season, hitting 50 percent from long range in all games and an impressive 64.9 percent in league play. Islander head coach Willis Wilson is in his fourth year as head coach at AMCC. Last year, he received the Ben Jobe National Coach of the Year Award, presented annually to the top minority coach in NCAA Division I. Wilson directed the Islanders to the third-biggest turnaround in the nation a season ago. Sunday’s matchup will mark the first meeting between Saint Louis and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. SERIES HISTORY This will be the first meeting. JESUIT BASKETBALL SPOTLIGHT Saint Louis will play two home games this year as part of the Jesuit Basketball Spotlight – Dec. 2 vs. Rockhurst and Feb. 3 vs. Saint Joseph’s. Since the 2008-09 season, the JBS has brought greater positive awareness and exposure to Jesuit education and its shared mission to thousands of people across the nation who have attended more than 500 basketball games played by Jesuit institutions against each other. I'm sorry we keep changing ways to watch the game each week on ya'll. But, I'm a firm believer in this being our new go to option for Fox Sports Midwest games because after watching a few minutes myself this is the best quality I have ever seen from a stream. Please give me ya'lls feedback since the stream is on now to help with setup, etc. Also, I will be available for anyone that needs help setting up VLC. --Go Bills!
