SLU wins 2-0.  They outshot Richmond 20-0.   Gaebe scores a goal.   Scored two early and coasted.   On to LaSalle.   Let’s stay away from Temple.

Definately stay away from Temple….

Two more goals for Caroline Kelly tonight as #8 TCU goes to Orlando and stomps UCF.  She plays 35-40 minutes a game but scores at will.  Can you be an All American if you don’t start?

SLU 2 Richmond 0

…………..

I wasn’t surprised, but it was disappointing to Richmond play two stacks of four 20 plus yards from their own goal for the entire game after giving up 2 goals in the first 5 minutes.

…………..

Richmond plays a 4-2-3-1. However it can look like a 4-3-3 and a 4-4-2 at times. They have struggled to defend set pieces and wide service this season. They lack some size and poise defensively in the final 18. SLU had 2 nice set piece corner goals. 1 was called back for offsides away from the play. It was a call I didn’t like.
……………
Larson was unavailable for SLU. Gaebe sat the rest of the game (75 minutes) after her early goal, It was SLU’s 2nd of the game.
………….
3rd minute set piece corner goal. Houck back post service to Heckel, who headed it to Hope Kim for a 1-0 lead.
…………
5th minute, nice target turn and left side run for Sawyer. Ground pass for Gaebe in the middle of the 18. 2-0
…………
8th minute chance, Le to Kim to Schwartz was knocked off of the goal line.

SLU then subbed out Gaebe for the game.
………..
When an opposing team packs two stacks of 4 players 25 yards from their own goal, you have to make them move side to side and backwards with pace.

Diagonal balls. Play a short ground pass up the middle, turn and reverse fields wide. Play up the line with outside backs. Overlap, pass and go behind. etc….several things.

In order to score more goals. what is less effective are short triangle passes up the middle against a crowd of 8 or 9. SLU did too much of that at times with its 2nd 11.
……………
Set pieces were successful and dangerous throughout the game for SLU. More and more each game, Heckel, Stram, Le wrestled getting on the end of more headers inside the 18.
…………….
Very nice 3rd goal called back for SLU. Luebbert corner, flicked on header from Stram, volleyed in by Kim. Offsides was called away from the play. Didn’t like the call.
…………..
A few times in the 2nd, first touch finishes needed to be better from wide service, including a few at the 6. This was with the 2nd 11.
……………
It was mostly a net neutral RPI game for SLU, vs a sub 200 RPI team. Combined with other results, SLU is 36, dropping slightly. SLU is considered to be one of the last 5 teams in the tourney as an at large. But SLU has several more chances to improve that.
……………
2 bad RPI draws are what’s separating SLU from being a top 20 RPI.
……………
There are different ways to obtain a good RPI. Xavier is top 20 by having no bad losses or draws. SLU is their only loss. Other teams have a few bad hiccups but they also have several more stronger wins to overcome that.
……………
Gaebe’s 12 goals are 3 goals behind the national lead. And her 12 goals in 15 games is top 10 nationally. SLU is also top 10 nationally in corner kicks per game. SLU is just outside of the top 20 in shots per game.

I was pretty amused when Kim (I think) plowed that keeper and the ball into the net in the first half.   I know it was a foul but still pretty awesome.

Do you know of Larson's injury is one that may be a long term issue?  It doesn't seem like she is playing with quite the pace on the wing as she has in previous seasons.   Maybe I am just being too negative about a really good team.

Larson has played with the same pace as aways. She does many things very well, a true two way player. She’s one of SLU’s best few players.

She wasn’t looking to score enough earlier in the season. And when she’s made many long runs through defenses, she’s needed more front foot balance, and patience, on some of the finishes. She needs some other players to provide more service for her at times. And she needs some others to finish the many opportunities she creates.

SLU has played her a few times up top as a forward, but that depletes wing play for the team where she is needed. Playing her more often in the middle here and there is also an option to get her more involved. But SLU has 2 players there that only play there.

Anyone else having trouble getting the game on espn+

it was listed. I was on game starting soon. Now it’s gone

LaSalle announced the game will not be televised due to technical difficulties.

At this point they don't know the cause.  They maybe dropped some of the equipment in the pool or the broadcasting team came under heavy fire on the way to the game.

I was at the City 2 game, was going to watch the WSOC game on TV when I got home, but I guess not. Read in the stats they won 4-1, but noticed in the stats Emily Gaebe didn’t play at all? Anyone know what’s up?

Noticed that as well.   The conference title is going to come down the final game in Dayton that we likely will have to win.  Hoping she is healthy by then.

Made it to the City 2 game as well.  Good crowd, good finish.

SLU 4 La Salle 1

SLU has settled back into the 4-2-3-1 for several games, playing an attacking player in the defensive midfield. Very set back 6 with a few steady outside back rotations.

La Salle 4-2-3-1.

The Explorers are a physical if not chippy team. But SLU was ready for a physical game. La Salle takes on the personality of their coach. They play their wings and back 6 deep. It’s the strength of their team. Getting an early lead against them helps not allow La Salle to play the way they like to play. Last season, La Salle was able to play SLU scoreless for a half. SLU moved to a 4-1-3-2 and put up 4 goals.

La Salle takes a lot of shots from distance. It’s also how they scored their goal. And it’s where almost all of their shots were taken.

La Salle returned several starters and bench players from last year including their best scoring threat, Haley Gschrey who rotated between central attacking midfield and forward. She scored on 25 yard free kick after a SLU foul outside of the box.DiElmo adds to their attack. Walker was quiet. Generally, La Salle defends, and they are less willing to change shape to send more players forward in close games even when losing during the game.

No Larson. No Gaebe for SLU. They will return soon. This is why depth and having a 2nd 11 matters.

SLU rotated wings at forward and forwards at wing. Discussed previously the players more likely to finish inside the 18. Sawyer and Smith were two of those mentioned, and they did just that middle of the 18.

Substitution patterns for SLU were good, and re-entry was quicker than in some other games where certain players sat too long. It also helps to have versatile players that can play multiple positions. Leonard played on the wing after having also played outside back at times this season. Several SLU players can play all 3 attacking positions.

Set pieces. SLU scored a big goal just before half time after a free kick, when they were able to get numbers forward in the 18. SLU scored an additional set piece goal late Houck to Heckel from the right side of the 18. This was sandwiched between a nice play from Le to find Sawyer. Playing to tack on late and put the game away. SLU continues to improve on set pieces. getting more out of the air first touch.

Uplifting result against a tricky opponent without 2 of SLU’s best players.
……………
SLU had a chance to enter the 20’s RPI but that was quickly erased when Xavier lost at home to Providence. It was the first bad RPI result for Xavier this season. The combination of results moved SLU back to 34 RPI entering this week.

Julia Simon opens the scoring 8 minutes in, 1-0 Billikens, assist by Emily Gaebe

Houck deserved an assist even more for keeping it in the offensive end and making the opportunity possible. Great team effort.

3-0 Billikens at half time, getting called offsides once was the entire Patriot offensive summary for the game so far.  Shots are 15-0 in favor of the Billikens.

5 minutes in, 4-0 Billikens. Goal by Hope Kim, assist by Izzy Luebbert of a corner kick.

Houck's long ball looked like it was going out but Smith timed a perfect run to get a perfect header on it for the 2-0 lead.

Outstanding shot from about 21 yards out by Preusser to make it 3-0. This is only her 7th appearance of the season. First goal.

Hope Kim is having a great freshman year.

Lots of reserves in now. Great to see Gaebe in the starting lineup and looking healthy but no need to give her any more run tonight. Mason is absolutely overmatched.

By the way, Dayton tied Fordham tonight, so SLU will move up to first place with this win. That means SLU clinches the 1-seed and regular season title with a win or tie at Dayton this weekend. Dayton needs to win but can still take the 1-seed. Can't ask for more exciting stakes for a final gameday if you're the A10.
