Breaking down the game

Just because the other thread turned into bad (good?) schtick.

I really looked at the guard positions as I think that is where games are won and lost. I will be very interested to see who matches up with Joe Jackson from Memphis. He looks to be a faster/quicker version of Mike McCall (5 stars for those who care). He is a true sophomore and I am hoping that he gets matched up with Kwamain. KM is still our best, most experienced player overall and I want the pseudo senior against the sophomore. This is a game where we need to really lean on KM to hit big shots and make star plays.

I expect DE to match up with Barton who by most indications is there best player (5 star). I want RickMa to look DE in the eye and say..I do not care if you score a single point, I want you giving 110% on D. DE is going to be huge for us this game as he is one of the few players we have who can combat their athleticism.

Cody needs to keep his stroke and we need to run the offense patiently like we did in Anaheim and against teams who we played for the first time. The A10 teams scouted us incessantly and I think X in the 3rd game had truly seen nearly all of the wrinkles our offense had to offer. That is when KM sometimes just said, F this, I am shooting the three (without running much offense). The slips, rolls, and kicks that give us open shots SHOULD be available as I do not think Memphis will concentrate on where we are going but just emphasize pressure and creating turnovers.

This might be a time when we pull the Soderberg vs Arizona (2003) strategy where 4 players run back on defense after the shot goes up. Of course on the other hand, Memphis is supposedly a bad rebounding team so maybe we think we can grab offensive rebounds and get some put backs.

If we can handle the pressure, I am talking less than 15 Turnovers, I think we can win. The more "exciting" the game is, the more it favors the tigers.

I did about 10 mins of looking stuff up, so please dont crucify me if these thoughts are off base.

Bottomline, in RM I trust.

i only looked at losses, because it would take too much of my precious porn/music research time to look at the wins, but we only had 15 TOs 3 times, against LMU, Dayton in OT and UMass. i suspected we haven't had more than 15 TOs all year and barring some anomalous victory, i think that's the case. i'd rather keep it around 10-12 turnovers. i'd also like to get ahead by 25.

memphis leading scorers are Barton, Jackson, Black, Crawford followed by Thomas. Barton is 6'6", Jackson is 6'1", Crawford is 6'4" and Black brings their sole size at 6'8". Thomas is 6'6". Two of their four others listed in double digit mintues are 6'87" and 6'9". So this is hardly a size or skill thing to me. They want to up tempo it much like Mizzou or La Salle would because of the disadvantages that lack o fheight usually provides. Not true with us. We do no ttower above them nor they us.

Four of their top five are sophomores while Thomas is a freshman. Hmmmmm. Bright lights, big city, who knows. All in all, I think this is a good game for us in temrs of how we match up.

Channeling Baret Scott ......."Can't Wait!" I thinkit will be fun and I, for one, am not scared. Of course, the defensive line that plays in shorets for Michigan State might make mince meat out of either of us. But let's worry about that Friday and Saturday.

Just curious, but he apparently averages around 24/mpg but really didn't do much the last 5; injured or not needed? I assumed if you're blowing teams out you might let a freshman get some experience.

He was injured and they didn't rush him back. Then he tweaked his injury again in the CUSA tourney. so they kept his minutes down as a precaution.

To be fair, Memphis sounds a little like temple to me in the back court. And we didn't do so well against Temple's guards. DE on Barton could spell foul trouble for DE, that will be a key matchup. I don't want to see cassity in this game at all.

Crawford is a 6'4 guy that shoots 40% from three. That scares me. Hello Kalif Wyatt. JJ could get the Crawford assignment, but JJ won't be starting.

On paper, the key for us appears to be controlling Crawford and Barton.

It'd also be nice to get some good minutes out of CR.

Thanks for the info. Any word on what the injury was/if it's 100%?

I read this guy has a 7ft wingspan which leads me to believe he's an important part of your rebounding scheme / dunking attack.

He might not be starting, but I see him playing at least 25 minutes in this game, maybe more if DE gets into foul trouble (a very real possibility.)

Yep. Add in this thomas kid and they have three seemingly good players that go 6'4, 6'6 and 6'6.

That's the ball game for us in my opinion. Figure out how to contain these three. Crap, just given the size of these guys, KC might have to play.

We also haven't played a lot of teams that press or trap as much as Memphis does. If we keep TOs to our season average or lower, that puts us in a good position.

People are underrating Memphis' length and athleticism, too. Those guys might not look much bigger on paper, but they have a few guys with much longer reach than their listed heights indicate.

I don't see him being able to keep up with them. Most A10 guards blow by him; there's no way he can stop anyone on Memphis one-on-one. I'd still stick with Jett, Mitchell, and McCall as much as possible and cede the height advantage. Just keep them from driving and force them to shoot.

Agreed re: KC, which pretty blows b/c they don't have to guard him. I think JJ plays b/c of his size, rebounding/hops and proclivity to get a few steals (PS how awesome was it when he tried to dunk in the A10 game against La Salle off a steal?). Also, as of late, he's hit a couple of mid range jump shots which varies our offense just a bit.

I completely agree, KC won't be able to keep up with them. This will be a damn tough matchup for us. We'll need CR's athleticism, even if its just to give DE a break. There's going to be a 6'4 shooter with 2 Outerbridges out there on the court. This is why i was hoping for a team with more of an inside presence as opposed to this long quick guards. Tough tough matchup for us.

nick unless jett is in the game or evans is driving to the basket, we pretty much do this now.

Adonis had his moments earlier in the season. Wait till you see the hops on D.J. Stephens (43" veritcal, if I remember correctly). Speaking of dunking attack....he's currently a finalist for Dunk of the Year.

DJ comes off the bench as relief for Tarik Black/Witherspoon at times. Super high-flyer type guy, which also frustrates me at times. It takes him so long to come back down after going for a pump fake, whoever he's guarding has time to step over and take a shot.

The guard play on the perimeter (on both sides of the court) concerns me more than some high-flying dunker.

I like his 2.4 pts per game. I'm assuming he averages 1.2 dunks per game. There will definitely be no way for us to stop his high-flying, cerebral, all-around game.

he's a player that goes in for 4-5 minutes to give your team a boost...he can jump crazy high for blocks and dunks...he plays his role well...nothing more, nothing less.

Exactly. I apologize if someone read more into my innocent comment concerning our "Dunking Attack" than was intended.
