how many wins is enough? 24 last year wasnt, is there a number that would make the ford detractors happy? 15 teams in the conference and only 1 or 2 will make the tournament, are all the teams bad?

Number of wins doesn’t really matter when you play against weak competition. I think the context that’s missing from this discussion is how much Ford gets paid. If you’re the highest paid coach in the A10, how come you’ve never finished higher than fourth in six seasons (and most likely to finish fourth in your seventh season)? Fourth place should not be celebrated in this conference.

Besides Dayton, SLU has the most money invested into basketball in a weak A10. There’s no reason we can’t be like VCU or Dayton with regular top 3 finishes and in serious bubble conversations almost every season.

Let’s keep the half game out of first in perspective.  We still have to go to VCU who currently holds the half game lead and head to head tie breaker.  If Dayton wins tonight we are a game out of first but behind Dayton in 3rd due to the head to head and one more game with them.  If Fordham win their next game and we lose, they are 8-4 and in 4th place ahead of us because of the head to head.  Road wins are tough.  This version of the A10 is unpredictable.  The Dukes seem to be hitting their stride.  We’ve already lost to Umass.  This half-game out of first is at a critical juncture. 5th place and out of the double bye is way too close.  A win tonight is HUGE.

Fordham is already in 4th place. If they win and we lose, they’ll be in 3rd and we’ll be in 4th. VCU, Dayton, Fordham, then us. And we hold the tiebreaker over 5th place St. Bs. I agree with the sentiment that we’re not in as strong of a position as some would lead you believe (because of a backloaded schedule) but we’re not a game away from being out of the double bye.

I have to admit that clip made me realize that I do miss Nesbitt. This years team could use someone that’s willing to head butt the basket padding out of excitement after an and one.

Nesbitt’s best qualities are what this team is missing the most. Fire, athleticism, ball handling, shot creation, defense, etc.

    People were booing Yuri?
    That is a major Yikes.

And before someone says, oh that was just a couple of drunk idiots, fine.  Has any other SLU player been booed at home prior to the Ford era?

It certainly wasn’t a majority but there were enough for it to catch my attention.

heard booing but the timing of it felt more like everyone get it together than at one certain player.

I could see that but I took it to be directed at Yuri because he took a really bad shot after a couple bad possessions. Especially after what happened at the end of Fridays game.

This Rhode Island team was like looking in a mirror. Which makes sense, since the game was tied with 1:20 left.

No remarkable players on either team, same garbage Harlem Globetrotters weave (to run 12 seconds off the shot clock, just to get the ball back to where it started), poor ball protection, lazy passes, etc.

Just a couple of very average D1 teams.

Pretty sure I heard some boos directed toward Yuri, toward the end of the game. Lots of frustration with the program right now.

I heard the boos as well, after he bricked a heavily contested long 2. You know it’s bad when the usually tame SLU fans are booing the guy that just broke the A10 record for assists.

Yep.  I miss Nesbitt.  Love him or hate him, his upside was higher than anyone else’s….there was nothing he could not do…just too emotional and too often out of control.

Glad to see that there are still some members of the Nesbitt fan club left on the board. His skillset and fire is dearly missed from this years team.

Jerry Palm has SLU at a 12 seed matched up with Mizzou as a 5 seed

Joe Lunardi has SLU as a 13 seed matched up with Xavier as a 4 seed

I would take either at this point

Both are using us as a placeholder for the A10 autobid. Still have a long way to go before we make any at-large appearances in bracketology

I would hope so. I think we’d enter the tournament at 25-6, 17-1 in conference and finish 27-7 if we lost in the A10 finals but I agree with you it would be hard to keep us out. My only concern is that the A10 is so weak this year there’s a strong possibility our NET doesn’t improve much even with that record. To make the decision easier on the committee (i.e. improve our net to bubble territory and pass the eye test) we need to blow some teams out, get help from our non-con opponents, and lose to either Dayton or VCU in the finals. I agree with others that A10 ends up with 2 teams. I hope we’re one of them.

Curious what the lowest NET ranking to receive an at-large is. St. John’s received one (first 4) a few years back with a NET of 73. But the Big East also ranked as the 4th best conference by NET that year and the Red Storm had 10 Q1 and 2 wins that year.

We got screwed by Wichita State making the tourney in 2021. We were 52nd in the NET and they were 70th, which is personally the lowest I remember getting in. Thanks for that one TV Ted.

Out of good posts for the day.  (Steve's server must be in Fiji because they reset at weird times)  The Ford situation is kind of like Soderberg's although Travis has done more than Brad.  Is there a Majerus waiting in the wings?  If so lets go.  Show me something better and I may go for it......

My only fear about letting Ford go is the thought that the AD could likely mess up the next hire. Then again, SLU has a knack for replacing coaches that can’t get over the hump with all time greats. Grawer to Spoon, Soderberg to Majerus for example.

Yes, I did, we were 23–12…. I get it, you want the coach fired and you want everyone to know it…

NIT with the occasional lucky A10 tourney run is Ford’s ceiling. Are you okay with that? I’m not a Joe Labs or Bonner89 or BC…. I was a ford defender until the SIUE loss and I hope he pulls out a conference tourney run this year. But I just want better for SLU than the status quo.

You’re arguments are that of a small child…”well they’re doing it too…. You losers won’t even wait until the end of the year…think of it, they are 6–1 in the conference with 3 road wins and it’s nothing but incessant bitching… call yourself what you want, but you’re no fan of the university…

We aren’t having this conversation if we stayed within 10-15 points of Iona, actually make some shots in crunch time against Boise St, and maintained an 18 point lead at home against SIUE. I don’t think any of those things are big asks and would change our season drastically. Going 6-1 against bottom half A10 teams doesn’t change that. This team was receiving T25 votes before the year!

By the way we had a 6 game win streak with 3 road wins against A10 bottom feeders last season and you see where we ended up?

See my post above.  We thought our season died when we lost a Q4 game(sorta did), UD lose 3. They didn't have a great resume, other than finishing hot. If you ask me, 2 of the 3 big teams could all have similar resumes to UD last year, and finish strong while one gets the auto bid.  --- While UD last year had a decent Q1 bracket, the Q4 has to have offset that in some degree.

UD also had a win over Kansas. SLU has the only Q1 win in the conference this season and it’s nowhere near the same level.

I 100% agree with you, we lost to SIUE with Fred Thatch. But that isn't what you said. Now if your opinion is that Fred Thatch isn't a big injury then I will respectfully disagree and we can move on.

Our at-large chances arguably died with the home loss to Boise St and definitely died with the loss to SIUE. Since Fred was there for both of those, his injury can’t be used as an excuse for us not getting an at-large this season.
