  1. While 99% of the time I would be in favor of SLU scheduling a game that the majority of its fan base can drive to, fahk Southwestern Missouri State forever. Yes, you should usually get over grudges between programs, but not when those incursions happen against RickMa. You don't pull that BS.

There are numerous non-con opponents that bring multi-faceted benefits to try and get on our schedule, here are a few that I've been wanting for a while:

-Mi$$ou and Illinois: Long shots, but keep calling.

-SMU, Cincy, Memphis: Memphis and Cincy are strong AAC opponents with history that would get the fan bases fired up, also a drive-able distance, considerable alumni presence in Cincinnati. SMU is a school that shares a very similar profile with SLU, there is a massive SLU alumni presence in Dallas, and Dallas is recruiting ground Ford has history in and I'm sure he would love to get back to.

-Any Big East team, but especially Butler, DePaul, and St. Johns: Butler is an easy drive, always fun to play at Hinkle. Chicago and New York games would be well attended by area alumni.

-A not so obvious one - Arkansas: Fayetteville is an easy five hour drive away from the Lou, yes they are an SEC team with a lot of demands for a conference schedule, but SLU has no reason being immediate calling the Hogs (pun intended). Let's get an SEC team on the schedule.

well those of us tech challenged might need a little translation help here?

Of course: @bills10 posted a link that allows you to download SLU's basketball schedule (or any other sport for that matter) so that all the events automatically show up in your desired digital calendar of choice, whether that is ical, google calendar, or your outlook calendar, the link to download these schedules and instructions on how to download them are located here.

This way you don't have to create events in your calendar for Bills games, or constantly check online when SLU plays, or memorize the damn schedule, SLU's entire schedule is just automatically created in your calendar for you.

Concerning the color: When using google calendar, which is my digital calendar of choice, each event has a designated color banner that is used to add a little pop on each day's calendar slot, for some reason, when I dowloaded SLU's basketball calendar, the default colors was like a TCU-Purple, which was just annoying considering SLU's perfect shade of blue. So, in order to change the color for an event in google, you click on the event series in the calendar's side bar, a list of colors will pop up, none of them are quite SLU blue, so you click the little plus sign for custom color. Once you do this it will allow you to enter SLU's RGB (Red, Green, Blue) code to get an exact SLU Blue, SLU Blue's RGB code is Red: 0, Blue: 61, Green 165. And there you have it, now your banners are SLU Blue for all Billiken athletic events.

I don't use iCal so I have no idea how do it there. I don't believe Outlook allows you to do customer colorization. Its really nothing tech savy, its just me being OCD.

Useful link for the schedule to put it in your iPhone calendar if you don’t have the games and times already added

It is really nice, I live and die by my calendar.

One annoying thing for google users to look out for though, the default color for the calendar events when you first set them up is like a violet-purple, no doubt an oversight by our athletic department. You can amend the colors to be a more accurate Billiken Blue - it just feels right this way.

The RGB color code for our official SLU Blue is 0, 61, 165.

  4. I didn't watch the game, but it sure sounds like it was the perfect storm for a loss: Rivalry game, trap game, an opponent happy with packing in the defense after getting an early goal. Bad loss either way, I hope it fires up the Bills heading to UVA for the big road test. UVA is good but beatable obviously, they will be fired up as well. This loss goes away with a win over Virginia.

Rhode Island, SLU, and VCU all with 1 loss currently in the A10 soccer standings.

  5. When I come back to STL, I expect to do two things, watch Billikens basketball in the best arena ever constructed, and drink fresh, ice cold beer until my wife has to tell me that my volume level is inappropriate. Obviously, the Chaifetz is the only place I can do both at the same time.

I'm not a rich man, but I don't care about the price of beer, its part of the fun, not worrying about it is why I come into the office every day. I hand the good people at the counter a magic plastic card, they hand me back beers, can't complain about that.

  6. I'm being hyper critical here and I realize it, Kalish has us playing our best soccer in I don't know how long and I am thankful for it. But I would really like to see us get Schulte some support by netting a few more balls. Across this 6 game win streak, our margin of victory is a slim 2 goals, only  1 goal across the year. The 4 straight shut outs have led to an impressive goal differential, but let's get the man in net a little more breathing room.

Again, this is a hyper critical assessment of the Bills play.

  7. Patrick Schulte is a magician. Four shutouts and counting. Six straight wins for the Bills.

I was hopeful there would have been a few more goals tonight in a statement win, but I agree with the sentiment that Denver is a better team than their record states. BRING ON THE FLYERS.

We've already decided our son won't be playing football. Minds were made up well before he was born. Here in Cincinnati, HS football is king - it's like a small town in the south, but with way more high schools. And his grandfather is really pushing for him to go to St. Xavier, the local Jesuit football powerhouse. My FIL didn't play but his dad, brother, and uncles all played there. But my son won't be playing, and the majority of our friends and family here say their sons won't be playing, either.

I don't know what the youth football infrastructure is like in STL now, but playing before HS wasn't even an option when I was growing up. Some Catholic schools have teams here starting in first grade! The teams are 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, and 7th and 8th combine for "varsity". It's insane. He won't be at one of these schools, so hopefully not being around it as a kid means he won't want to play when he gets to HS. I've heard participation numbers are down here but the sport and culture around it are still huge, so it hasn't shown up yet in terms of schools downsizing programs.

As for the point @billikenfan05 makes, I think this indeed is going to play out along socioeconomic lines for the foreseeable future, with lower income urban and rural communities propping up a huge proportion the sport's participation numbers, but I'm also seeing a culture war forming around this sport more than any other. Plenty of middle class suburban families will continue to participate (for now, anyway) because of certain hallmarks of football culture - traditional physical masculinity, militaristic-style teaching and discipline, etc. One of the only guys around my age I know here who encouraged his son to play (he's on his grade school "varsity" team as an 8th grader) said he doesn't want him becoming a "pu$$y" and said that any hard hits to his head "will just help straighten him out because he's already got a few screws loose." He lives in a part of town where every boy plays football and they fit right in, whereas they'd be an oddity in my neighborhood, where I literally have not met one family that has a football playing son.

FWIW, my boss was a Division 1 football player at Baylor (pre-any scandals so that weren't that good, but still, D1 football is D1 football). He and his twin brother, who is also a VP at my company, were both big Texas HS legends back in their day. Football is religion down here. Regardless, they both have young boys now, they emphatically state that they won't let their sons play tackle football until the 8th grade.

To add to that Brett Favre is now a huge advocate of starting full contact ball later, around HS. The Manning brothers didn't play full contact until the 9th grade. These guys are all tougher/better athletes then I ever got even close to obviously, if they don't believe their sons playing full-contact football until far later than traditionally is the call, who am I to dispute it?

I went to the SLU/Denver game (it was either last year or the year before) and their coach was a b!tch. Constantly complaining to the officials and I think he even got into it with one of our players, the guy was banty af.

If there is one thing I am always pro, it is constant, borderline-inappropriate, unceasing smack talk aimed at opponents coaches. Jamie Franks looks like a nerd, someone at the game tonight remind him that he is one!

    Let's Go Bills!

Thanks to those of you who have kept this thread updated throughout the season. I see we play Denver tomorrow night, I hope the fans give their coach hell (assuming they still have the same coach). Anyone headed to UVA for the game next week?

Jamie Franks looks like a pretty dorky bro... But is there any specific reason we should be hating on Denver's coach? I am v curious.

  11. Everyone on this board who wouldn't jump at the chance to get the mighty Chargers of Los Angeles here in the Lou is an absolute idiot. Are you guys kidding me? Forget that they are a doormat franchise with only 19 playoff appearances (AFL era included!) in 60 years of existence, forget that they have 0 championships to their name, forget that they can't sell out a 27,000 person MLS stadium, forget that their horrible owner would smack a baby for a buck. This is the N-F-L you guys.

Shame on you all for speaking ill of The Almighty Shield. We should be honored they are even considering moving a team to St. Louis after the terrible way we treated our last owner. Do what we have to do, spend what we have to spend, let's get America's game back in Gateway City.

(F*** the NFL and F*** the Chargers/Rams - Real talk though, I love those powder blue uniforms, best thing the Chargers have going for them)

  12. I'm starting to get deja vu. Billikens are 5-0 in A10 play. Still have not been scored upon.

FIVE GAMES - FIVE CLEAN SHEETS. Patrick Schulte is the best goalkeeper in the nation and should be starting to get Hermann Trophy hype.

Two winnable games, at home, going into the test of the season with #1 and undefeated UVA. Devener and Dayton, both at home. Denver is 2-7-1, 1-4-1 on the road. Dayton is 6-7, 1-4 on the road. Bills need to focus on the moment and take care of business at home. Do your job, and the Bills look to be 10-3 when heading into Charlottesville. This season is starting to get exciting.

Something that is also important to note, the Bills have to keep winning these A10 games in order to keep pace with VCU, who is also undefeated in A10 play. The Bills and Rams don't play each other in the A10 regular season, so there is potential to have a tie in the conference regular season winner. With all these wins, Bills still don't control their destiny - unless they keep winning of course.

After the showdown with UVA, the Bills have Duquesne in Steel City and Fordham at home. Both teams are currently 3-1 in A10 play. We're going to be holding our breaths into the end of the season. Bills soccer is meaningful again!

  13. Billiken men improve to 4-0 in A10 play. Still have not been scored on. We have the best goalie in D1 soccer and he is a freshman. I wonder how long he'll stay in college, the kid could play in the MLS tomorrow.

I LOVE the direction this team is trending. That game against UVA is going to be a war. Win that and we likely get an at large bid.

I think every mid major coach believes the final 4 is doable after schools like WSU, Butler, Loyola, etc have done it.  I think we may have had a legit shot at it with Rick's boys, however, we just got some really tough draws. Probably the best shot was the '11-'12 team because we still had Kwamain. We gave MSU all they wanted, and had we got by them who knows.

Things have to break just right for a mid to do it, but first and foremost is the talent. I think if we can keep this group of FR together going forward and add in a few key pieces, a decent big man for one, it's a possibility. Ford's filled in all the slots now they just need the experience and the commitment.

I think there were two "book-it" teams in the hypothetical history of SLU basketball:

    1) If Hughes, for some unfathomable reason, decided to come back for his Sophomore year, that team had the pieces to go the final four. They lost so much when Hughes left though.

    2) If Rick was coaching the 2012-2013 team, they make the Final Four. I''ll go to my grave believing this. Altman so bewilderingly out-coached Crews in that game it hurts my whole body to think about. He had the perfect defensive game plan laid out for us and they executed it flawlessly. Crews made no adjustments and left those players out there flailing. That team was built to defend Russ Smith on that Louisville squad. Obviously, beating Duke in the Elite 8 is massive but, I'll roll the dice with Rick.

I think we have one of the largest "stadiums".

Interesting to see the Cult of the Grand Canyon on the list. Don't the students get college credits for attending events?

No reason to put "stadiums" in quotations, Herman qualifies as a stadium, though I agree it is in need of improvements.

I have no idea if GCU students get credit for going to athletic events, I do know that that for profit, fake "Christian," University, has one of the most gorgeous stadiums in college soccer.

While Spokane is much larger than the STL area, there are a number of similarities between SLU and Gonzaga sports/basketball, that make the article great reading for Billiken fans.

How in the world is Spokane larger than St. Louis? I suppose if you were to compare Spokane's metro/combined statistical area metrics to St. Louis City proper's population, but in terms of total metro area St. Louis dwarfs Spokane.

Gonzaga is the standard, perhaps below only Villanova, in terms of program stability at non-football schools, even over Xavier, no one is debating that and trying to emulate their success is old news, I don't want to sound prickish or dismissive but its not a new idea at all. And while I have been May's harshest critic often, even I am sure he has looked into figuring out ways we can replicate their success.

If Gonzaga is proof of anything, its that the weight of the coach on the success of the program is massive, Few powered this, and he deserves all the praise he received. You can build the arena, but as we've painfully seen, the wrong coach can set it all ablaze, I think Ford is that guy right now beyond a doubt.

What a country to live in, where the wealthiest people can demand that everyone else pay for a new stadium and cite "politics" for leaving when they don't get their way. The case against publicly funded stadiums is truly bipartisan, one of the rare things we can all agree about, because it involves both higher taxes and a gross misuse of the funds created by them. I genuinely don't understand how someone - other than the team owner(s) in question - could support it.

This also isn't about winning or losing. I've always been a fan of the Bills, Cards, and Blues, no matter how well they're doing in a given season. I don't care if the Cincy teams are good or not. I was merely pointing out that morale around the Bengals has been low for years and getting worse, and that even if they were good, the stadium deal is still a massive ripoff for Hamilton County.

Having a football team is not important for a region. The fastest growing regions in the US have to do with job growth and quality of life. Many of these places don't have football teams and certainly don't need them.

    Here, here.

The financial breakdown of it is almost insulting - especially when it comes to the NFL. The average revenue of an NFL team is around $432MM per year,  the tab for a new NFL stadium is around $1BB, and that goes on the city's books. Obviously the financial breakdown between revenues, costs, earnings, and economic impact for the city are more complicated then two figures, but you don't have to run any models to eyeball those two numbers and know that NFL Owner's should be footing a larger portion, if not all, of the bill.
