Prospective Head Coaches

Recommended Posts

Thought we could get one thread going with who we think are legitimate contenders for the SLU Head Coach position (assuming JC does not want the position), this could be coaches who are looking at getting let go or who we could pry away from their current positions.

I will throw the first interesting candidate out there:

Ben Howland - UCLA: ESPN reports that Ben Howland will be fired this week from UCLA. Yahoo Sports has reported Ben Howland has been officially fired.

Howland could be a good get - he's a big name, has a history of success, and is a very good recruiter (even if his coaching ability may be a little suspect). Amaker would be a bad decision - not a great track record there, and I have doubts about the Coach K coaching tree.

Why would we want someone who is being fired?

Odd suggestion but honestly, a potential homerun in my opinion.

Pat Skerry.

Excellent recruiter. He will be a star coach somewhere. Why not here?

I'll be honest, I had to look him up. Impressive turn around between his first and second seasons at Towson:

Howland's had success at UCLA and PITT. Yes, there were rumors how UCLA had run amok a couple of years ago, still he's won 3 conf titles, taken them to the final 4 a few times, and has recruited some great players. He's a defensive oriented coach. Plus his origins are the Beast. If JC's not the man and you want a splash hire you really couldn't go much bigger than Howand.

Might have been mentioned before, but what does everyone think of Jeff Capel III from Duke?

But I think Howland or Marshall would be excellent hires. Not sold on Amaker.

Like Jeff, prefer Chris Collins if we go Dooke Asst. route.

Marshall isn't happening. Especially not after the run they're currently making. He makes $1 mil+, has nearly unlimited resources and has already passed up a BCS job.

This has about a 5% chance of happening. And it would be a terrible choice to hire BOBBY KNIGHT.

Put whatever percentage chance on it you want. I'm not saying its definitely going to happen, just that it very well could. He has connections to St. Louis and there have been reports that he will not renew his contract with ESPN.
