Box and Won
Biondi said he'd retire if the endowment were to hit $1 billion. Anyone got $147 million to donate? Also, the S&P 500 gained 13 percent in 2012; what investments does the endowment hold?

I think in 06-07 SLU had an endowment of just over a billion. Then 08 hit.

bonwich
The calculation is for FY, which I think skews it in a head-to-head with the S&P. As point of reference, the FY2011 increase was something like 19 percent. Plus, the delta is total change, not return, so it includes withdrawals to fund capex and operating expenses. The percentage change values listed for the participating institutions DO NOT represent the rate of return for the endowments’ investments. Rather, the percentage change in the market value of an endowment from FY 2011 to FY 2012 reflects the net impact of: 1) withdrawals to fund institutional operations and capital expenses; 2) the payment of endowment management and investment fees; 3) additions from donor gifts and other contributions; and 4) investment gains or losses. kshoe
Plus, as Bonwich pointed out this is from June 30, 2011 to June 30, 2012, a period in which the S&P returned 5.5%.
