Questions about going to Atlantic City

Recommended Posts

For those going to Atlantic City or who have gone, what are the best hotels to stay at that are very close to where the game is played? Looks like the Trump is closest.

Assuming you fly into Philly, how do you get to AC? Rent a car, shuttle, train, hitchhike? Looks like it takes about an hour, does that sound right?

Are people getting tickets through SLU or just buying them on the internet?

I'm trying to decide whether or not to try to go. I really wish they had already moved this game to Brooklyn - would make the trip easier and more fun (I'm not a gambler so AC is just an annoying place for the tourney for me).

Haven't been, but I did the research for a trip this year (wife was 50-50, then decided not to go, so we'll just be going to the opening rounds instead).

Tickets through SLU appear to be a fair deal; better than the Ticketmaster price (without the should-be-illegal fees) for the seats and you're in the SLU section.

There is a train that goes from the 30th Street Station in downtown Philly (their main station) that leaves for AC every 90 minutes for $10 each way. The station in AC is a few blocks from Boardwalk Hall. You can get to that station from the airport via the subway system. http://www.njtransit...eAction=TrainTo

Driving from the airport to AC is just over an hour, depending on traffic.

I'm bummed we're not going; I know AC ain't what it used to be and that it's a little tricky to get to, but I would have liked to see a tournament there before they moved it.

Any hotel on the Boardwalk will be a 10 minute walk or less to boardwalk hall. I would just search for the best deal and go with that. Just google map the hotel to Boardwalk hall if off the boardwalk if concerned.

There seems to be a train option using New Jersey transit to get from Philly to Atlantic City http://www.njtransit.com. I am not quite sure where the Atlantic City train station is. The bus station is like a 10 minute walk, but somewhat shady of a walk.

With tickets, just wait until you get to Atlantic City. This will be my 9th conference tournament. There will always be tickets on the street. They also have a box office. Boardwalk hall has never been sold out for this thing.

If you do end up going, PM me your cell, and perhaps we can meet up for a meal or drink. Taj is treating ;)

After people answer Alumni's question how bout giving this a shot: How are you all planning for the Tourney? Bishop and I started figuring out logistics yesterday, and its pretty difficult to plan w/o knowing where they are going to play.

Basically, is everyone just waiting until Sunday then getting their act together really quick?

That is pretty much what I am doing. Really, really hoping for a drivable location.

Looking forward to seeing you guys there. This will be my 3rd time to AC for the tournament.

Couple of thoughts: in terms of tickets, one reason they become available for cheap is that fans for the teams that lose early look to unload their tickets.

In terms of getting from PHL (or NYC) to AC, if you can afford it I find a rental car to be really nice. Usually the weekend rental rates aren't bad and it allows you to go door-to-door faster (important if you're short on time trying to catch that Sunday night flight back).

I should have an extra seat or two driving down if anyone is arriving in PHL by 11:15 am on Friday morning. We'll drive straight to the arena so we can catch the 2nd half of the opening game.

PM me if you need more info.

Hotels: in order of closeness: Trump, Caeser's, Bally's, the Claridge and the Tropicana. Anything else can become a hike and the winds on the Boardwalk in March can be brutal especially when walking into the wind (cold, sand, etc.). Temps for the week show highs in the 50's w/rain on Saturday.

Travel: we drive seeing as I am in Baltimore. The docs fly into BWI (great SW/AirTran fares) and we go from there in one car. If driving from Philly, find your way to I-76 East over the Walt Whitman Bridge and follow signs to Rt. 42/Blackhorse Pike and Atlantic City Expressway (ACE). The ACE is a 55-mile straight shot toll road to the beach. The Whitman Bridge is also a toll. The ACE ends in downtown AC at Caeser's and Boardwalk Hall is the half-moon arena to the south of that. There is a parking garage underneath but fees are like $20 and you have to be out 1 hour after the end of the event. We park at the Trop (where we stay) for about $5/day.

Airport: check the Philly airport for ground transport as I believe there are trains from there to AC. They might take you to the 30th Street Station or not. Don't know, haven't done that. If you are so inclined, there is also an express bus service. The AC bus station is also near Caeser's but as noted above, the walk can be "shady" to say the least. AC was a decrepit, decaying town before the casinos came and while the casinos and Boardwalk are "okay" the streets around town are still horrid.

Tickets; I buy them there. Sessions anywhere from $30 to $67 per and that gets you two games. Title game might jump to $60. This allows flexibility depending on how far the team goes. An all-session pass can be had for as little as $79 in the "bronze" area. Boardwalk Hall is shaped like a horseshoe and the basketball arena looks like it was set down inside the old sandstone facility --- think Ol dKile just not as steep. It seats about 9K but I have never seen it filled for anything except a final game that featured St. Joe's and Temple -- two Philly schools. Usually, we will buy bronze seats but move down for the games with the SLU section usually behind our bench.

Places to eat: right across the boards over the ocean is the Pier at Caeser's -- a dining and entertainment complex -- rather high end. All the casino's have something. The older casinos are on the Boards. The newer ones like the Borgata and others are across town to the north in what they call "the Marina." You CANNOT walk from that end to the other. Too far and too dangerous. The north end --- Resorts, Truimp Taj Mahal and Showboat --- are also to far away. Some recommednations: White House Subs at 2301 Artctic Avenue is two blocks away from the beach behind Boardwalk Hall. The Irish Pub is at 164 St. James Place and the Boardwalk -- old, old, old Atlantic City.

Yes. I've got this SLU ticket order form on my desk and I'm wondering whether I should fill it out. But otherwise, I'm planning on putting together whatever else I need to as soon as our name is announced.

NYB - a buddy of mine who now flies private jets out of DAL said that hipmunk.com is the best place for airfare. It doesn't include prices from Southwest, but it is still the best aggregator of flight prices and options.

Won't be able to make it to AC, but I must say this website is good! Thanks for the link!
