  1. I realize the team's performance last season might not lead someone to assume a big role for any returning player other than GJ.  But I doubt Hughes and Thames would have stayed if, after meeting with Coach Schertz, they believed they would be at the end of the bench going forward.

Yeah I agree with this but does anyone on the team currently have + ball handling skills?

We mentioned beating the press as a reason for a PG. It's best to beat a press with passing.  But sometimes especially late game situations you need someone with traditional PG skills.

Maybe Coach thinks we have enough.  I'm unsure.  I'd think we need 1 or 2 PGs.  Then more front court players.

I imagine CJS is a "you can never have two many PGs that can shoot" type. But between Swope, Hughes, and McCottry I don't see that as the greatest area of need.  I'd be more concerned about finding some complimentary size up front.

that said, it has been my business experience that most "managers" wont surround themselves with associates that will complete their "team" by strengthing their collective weaknesses.   they are more apt to find a worker bee or a yes person.   rather than "risk" bringing in the person that could take their job.

Steve Spagnolo was a perfect example of this when he coached the Rams.

  4. Once all the lawsuits work out and unions form we'll see the college teams in revenue sports become professional organizations that are merely "sponsored" by the universities.  The universities and their donors will seed them with assets and kick back operating profits to the unis as a way of paying for the right to use the unis' facilities and trademarks.

With that we'll see a complete and total end to transfer restrictions, red-shirts, and academic requirements.  We'll probably also start seeing kids getting multi-year contracts as programs try to keep teams together.  They'll finally just be professional athletes.

I am sure CJS reviewed some game tapes & got some recommendations from Tate.

I wonder if he had some individual 'come to Jesus' meetings with individuals and saying 'I see limited playing time for you for the upcoming season' ?

He may pretty much know who transferring in from ISU.

My assumption as well. Hopefully it is a sign that CJS is confident enough about who is coming in that he could honestly tell Curcic his chances for minutes would be limited.

They are delusional over there.  Schertz leaving completely broke them.  I really do understand being disappointed, but they have lost touch with reality.  Nobody acted like that when Romar left here for Washington.

I’ve always gotten the impression no one noticed when Romar left for Washington.

Larry Bird used to have a restaurant/hotel right off the highway in Terre Haute.  I ate at the restaurant a couple of times.   It had some cool Celtics memorabilia.  One of his less talented, weirder looking brothers was running the place.

Yikes, imagining a weirder looking member of the Bird family.

I am not a hater of this likely new coach.  I’m just guarded about it.  I don’t trust Chris May’s decisions and I feel Schertzs style might not fit our league.  And I think an actual search instead of just having 1 candidate might have been a better path.    If he does well I will be among the first to praise him.

You are presuming they didn’t start looking until Ford was gone.

They’ve been looking since at least January. Schertz was not the only one considered, even if he ends up being the only one offered.

    Misinformed for sure.

Yeah I had to chuckle when, I think the same poster, suggested Schertz has brought their program so far already that moving to SLU would be a step down for him at this point.

Lol you do realize Slaten has been the sports director at two tv stations in town for multiple years.

He's also been fired from every job he ever had, usually after failing and embarrassing himself and his employer in some way. He's currently listened to by dozens of people on the town's third choose for sports talk.

ok bernie.   look that's her issue.   she should at least have the conversation.   how often will we see schools of that magnitude looking for a new home?

If the commish has a move to make, it would be to pounce on any/all basketball only schools that are made second-class citizens in the Big East the moment any ACC refugees join the conference.

If you have the right person picking coaches, it's just fine.

    See VCU-

Within the first 2 years after a coach leaves, they bring in someone and make the tourney + they made extra cash for the AD with the buyout.  And it will happen with Odom next year.

    2008–09 Anthony Grant 24–10 14–4 1st NCAA First Round
    2009–10 Shaka Smart 27–9 11–7 5th CBI Champions
    2010–11 Shaka Smart 28–12 12–6 4th NCAA Final Four
    2011–12 Shaka Smart 29–7 15–3 2nd NCAA Third Round
    2012–13 Shaka Smart 27–9 12–4 2nd NCAA Third Round
    2013–14 Shaka Smart 26–9 12–4 2nd NCAA Second Round
    2014–15 Shaka Smart 26–10 12–6 T-4th NCAA First Round
    2015–16 Will Wade 25–11 14–4 T-1st NCAA Second Round
    2016–17 Will Wade 26–9 14–4 2nd NCAA First Round
    2017–18 Mike Rhoades 17–14 9–9 5th None
    2018–19 Mike Rhoades 25–8 16–2 1st NCAA First Round
    2019–20 Mike Rhoades 18-13 8–10 7th [a]
    2020–21 Mike Rhoades 19–7 10–4 4th NCAA First Round
    2021–22 Mike Rhoades 22–10 14–4 2nd NIT Second Round
    2022–23 Mike Rhoades 27–8 15–3 1st NCAA First Round

    23-24 - NIT

24-25 Likely NCAA if Odom isn't picked up this summer

    - While Shake and Wade are outstanding coaches, Rhoades is eh, and Odom is another one we could have gotten with our resources.

In this era the AD needs to have the next coach in mind at all times.  The good years, the bad years, always. The AD (and boosters) should have 3-4 names whose agents they are prepared to call with very little notice. Sustainable success will involve being able to have your coach poached and immediately turn around and make another good hire..

It was brought up on Spaces last night that "Team Blue" has to go.

Based on how this went down - Kilcoyne's tweet right before the buzzer, Ford not wanting to discuss it in any detail, SLU not making it official until an hour and a half after the game - it looks like they wanted to get everyone back to St. Louis and then take control of the announcement and media interactions.

Vintage Chris May. 'Let's keep a lid on this as long as possible and control the narrative' has backfired more than once now.

Given the timing of how it came out Martin (and undoubtedly Frank and others) have had the news for weeks and agreed to hold the scoop until the Bills season officially ended.

He basically has said he is done. Sounds like he is done coaching.

After the last few years I don’t blame him for not be too enthusiastic about starting over somewhere.  But time might heal that up and help him get that fire back.
