"6-4 Tommie Liddell will announce college Friday

By Chris Monter

Date: Oct 1, 2003

6-4 Tommie Liddell of East St. Louis (IL) High will announce his college choice this Friday. Liddell averaged 17.2 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game last season as the Flyers finished 21-7 last season. He shot 52.7% from the field, 26.7% from three-point range and 69.5% from the line. St. Louis head coach Brad Soderberg and assistant Angres Thorpe visited Liddell Monday. Liddell is expected to commit to the Billikens Friday. He played for the St. Louis Eagles AAU team."

it has always been my understanding that these guys surf the web and talk to contacts 24/7. if a credible rumor comes up, then they react by trying to get someone to verify. i.e. for all we know, chris reads our board. then he starts calling. he might call coach brad, the liddell's, his high school coach, the eagles coach, anyone that will know the straight story. once they believe it is solid they write it.

judging from the fact the story mentions a visit from angres and brad to the liddell house, i would guess his source is either brad or angres or the lidell's.

they cannot publically make such a statement. you are correct. a good reporter though can ask a question that the coach can answer in a way to get the message across. plus, you did not see a quote from slu did you. i.e. "dont quote me". or "i didnt tell you this".

tiger roy is right ..... but there are other examples that can be used as well. We in the profession use something called that "background." Some could take to the level of "deep background." But to go this route you have to be confortable in trusting that the reporter won't reveal his sources. Some hide it. Woodward and Bernstein used their background so deep that it became "deep throat." Linda Lovelace on the other hand .....

I don't have a problem understanding "deep throat." What throws me are the "background" and "deep background" references that come before it. Maybe I'm wrong, but I didn't take Taj's initial "professional" reference to mean anything related to pornography. Was the whole post related to it, or did Taj segue into it?

I'm like the character Michael Keaton played in the movie "Night Shift." Sometimes, when the mind gets going, its kind of hard to tell where I'm going to end up with things. Kind of like web site reporting ... blah, blah, blah .... porn! Some may not be able to see the connection; I not only see it, I can make it.

And with a mind like mine ... one that so low it can play handball with the curb .... well, you get the picture, right thicks.

Might have something to do with my formative upbringing on 16G. See other thread.

I work with the press .... television, radio and print. Like any other profession, we can have some codes we work through. For themost part, when talking, you have to assume its all quotable. So whatever you say, it can appear in print with the words "said so-and-so" behind it. But I can code my response by saying "this is on background." Basically it means that they can use it but I would prefer they not use my name on it. I don't care if at that point they attribute to "said an unnamed source" but I don't want my name on it at all. And if I can take it even further by saying this is on "deep background" meaning I would prefer that if they use it they don't attribute it at all. For the most part, you can almost bet that if a source is named in a quote, you're pretty close to whomever is feeding the background as well.

I don't do this all the time .... I have to develop a rapport with my guys to feel comfortable going this route. I have that with a couple of the press contacts I've used over time.

Monter may have gotten word from someone ... maybe even members of the SLU coaching staff. But you would have to believe that they would have to feel really really comfortable before doing anything like that. That's just my speculation. Of course, Monter is connected to the NBA and maybe SLU used a NBA-er to explain how great it is to stay and play at home for college. Who knows.
