One cannot help being amused by Marquette's seemingly endless search for a nickname. The vast majority of the Marquette alumni wanted to reinstate Warriors, but that ran afoul of Native American groups. Out here we have the NBA's Golden State Warriors, and the mascot, Thunder, is like a titan, not a Native American. No one seems to complain about the use of Warriors here, although the name Golden State is another story.

In any event, Marquette Gold is just a terrible nickname. Couldn't they do any better than that?

But only the switch from Warrior to Golden Eagle was motivated by what you call "PC" thinking. The switch from Golden Eagle to Gold was dreamed up by some horrible hybrid of board cluelessness, marketing "genius" and branding consultants. Marketing consultants, now there is something to laugh at.

Great idea for a mascot....a joint! What gets me is Warriors is not an Indian moniker. Warriors are fighters they can be Romans, Germans, Americans, etc. I mean if any team ought to have their name changed it ought to be the Washington Redskins. Now that's a slam.

Shocking that 6% liked it. Why not be the Marquette Platinum...more precious than gold.

$$$$$$ All about the buck people.....safe way out, ....Warriors merchandise is all the more precious....now the few who liked Golden Eagles can get their collectible stuff too...and now "Gold." Those poor Native Americans donate a lot of coin there....obviously they did their research to find out that donations to the school haven't been affected as much as the buzz says since change from Warriors...or they would be Warriors....I do find it neat that their graduation speaker last, a Marquette alum, head of Kimberly Clark or something of the like, offers up $1 million to change the name back to Warriors about ten feet from the President of the school. That would have been fun to see the surprised reaction. I am sure he wouldn't have been invited if they knew that was in the speech.

They could be the Golden Retrievers...but if the basketball team starts winning like the past...people would be wearing Golden Retriever sweatshirts...doesn't really matter over time.

In the near term, one wonders...if all those people were clamoring for a return to Warriors...why make such a big production out of the announcement...short term heavy backlash...long term, $$, and indifference. My only question is why not the Marquette Yellow, or another version of the color yellow...there is absolutely zero gold in their colors. Gold is the color of Notre Dame's helmets.

I'm still in shock. This must be some horrible joke!

The issue with Warriors and Native Americans is that for all 40 years the nickname was Warriors it had Native American imagary. From the mascot "Willie Wampum" to an actual Native American. The Board (mainly the Jesuits, I am led to believe) felt that the connection could never be seperated so going back wasn't an option.

The Michelob Golden Light Drafts.....any A-B person on this board knows the wild popularity of that beer in the State of Minnesota and parts of Wisconsin. Ever been to Minnesota? Crazy....Anytime in the mid 1990's and after....you would have an easier time getting one than a Bud or Bud Light at a bar. Reeally a bizzare scene.

At the Oakland Coliseum Arena, an old San Francisco Warriors banner bearing a Native American was placed on a visible high wall at one end. But the Warriors for a long time had no mascot. The logo once included a SF Cable Car and later a map of California. A couple of years ago, Golden State introduced Thunder as its mascot, which looks like a blue titan, like an action figure.

The point is that a Warrior does not have to be a Native American. Marquette's alumni have wanted Warriors back from the time that name was dropped. It is hard to believe that Marquette would compound its past error with an even bigger one.

ESPN News just had an interview with Wade, who apparently had not heard of the change:

ESPN: Your alma mater, Marquette, they've changed their nickname to the Gold. What do you think of that?

Wade: To that what?

ESPN: To the Gold. The Marquette Gold. That's what they're going with now.

Wade: [Pause. Furrows his brow.] Oh I gotta call. I gotta call in on that one. I don't know how that sounds.

ESPN: We're breaking some news here?

Wade: I heard they was trying to change it back to Warriors.

ESPN: No I guess they're going with Gold. I'm surprised they didn't call you to check if it was okay with you.

Wade: [squints. Incredulous.] The Gold? [beat.] No I'm gonna make a phone call to to Marquette after we get off this. [Laughs] I don't know about that one.

ESPN: So that might change.

Wade: The Gold? The Marquette Gold?

ESPN: All right Dwyane, so far so good, and I know your word carries a lot of weight at Marquette as well as Miami, so congratulations. Enjoy the rest of the playoffs.

Wade: Thank you I will. [Looks off camera and says to someone] The Gold?

.. in today's litgious, hit-the-real-lottery-or-make-one-up, reality TV society ... a color or an animal cannot sue you. How many times have you seen someone get upset when the coach or colorguy says "Man, what a warrior he is!"

Talk about reality .. anyone ever had to deal with current American Indian tribes? I do .. and any time I hear 'sovereign nation," I start to cringe. Our peace offering was an actual fire truck! I guess something was needed to protect the reservation ... at least the golf course and the casino!

man, Taj - did you hit that on the head...

as an example - i am sure some have heard about the guy in NC or somewhere that found the finger tip in his frozen custard (coming on the heels of the fraudulent crap with the lady and the chili at Wendy's)

the guy was back in the store within 30 minutes of the incident - and the store owner/manager tried to get the finger back from the guy so it could be reattached - THE GUY WOULDN'T GIVE IT TO HIM! instead he left screaming about calling his lawyer.

the finger now can't be reattched to the poor bastard that cut it off - and is sitting in the guy's freezer that found it - waiting for his big lawsuit.

i guess there will be some irony when a guy that stops for a nice cold frozen treat ends up burning in hell.
