ACE
No X. No big man. Three available scholarships. I'm I the only one who is very disappointed that we don't have anything at this point?
BillikenButch
Dustin Maguire as a player?
billiken_roy
has a big body. plays forward for civic memorial. fearless. never met a shot he didnt like, but i dont say that in a negative manner. my hopes for mcguire is that he is being recruited as a combo forward that could play wing or do time at power forward. if not, i think my first choices in this class would be leonard or hill who are more athletic than mcguire and pretty good shooters themselves. BillikenButch
As a combo forward, would he be a good addition to our team?
SIUSalukis
He's only 6'5. Combo forward with the lean to small forward more times than not.
billiken_roy
you have obviously never seen him play saluki.
billiken_roy
according to chris monter's site, we are competing with dayton, stanford and vanderbilt for this guy. i know nothing else about him as my subscription to monter's site has run out. getting chris to renew is crazy. he needs an assistant as i think he does all his admin stuff himself. slu72
not a big man on the list? Hmmmm.....I think it's time we bring in AB as an ass't. Least ways we could offer a 6'8-6'9" kid the opportunity to learn under a proven NBA pf. Or, it's time for UB to go the crossroads, get down on his knees, and sell his soul to the devil for a PF. Billiken Law
honest question here, how many high school kids even know who Anthony Bonner is? When you look at what other schools are doing to bring in bigs I think it's more about style of play than anything else.
billiken_roy
when a greek godlike body of anthony bonner visits that recruit and introduces himself the kid will notice him i guarantee you that. then it doesnt take much to make sure the kid knows that bonner was a starter for the knicks in the mid 90's and has continued to be a fixture in european pro ball since. i.e. it wouldnt take a genius to see that bonner would be able to show them how to be a successful inside player. SLUBALL
SLU72 you bring up a good point. Is it possibble the current assistant crew lacks credibility when attracting big men. All our Assistants and Head Coach seem to be guard/forward specialists. Who are our staff can provide credibility when talking with big men? Grawer although small in stature had a reputation for developing big men. A big man assistant (Bonner or any other assistant over 6'8") could provide an advantage here at SLU. cheeseman
All this talk of bringing AB in as an asst. coach is moot - we already know that Brad does not have an opening on his staff and we know that AB reportedly asked for something over $100K as a salary. Perhaps if one of the current coaches leave then something might be worked out but if the salary is important to AB then nothing will probably make it happen. SIUSalukis
>you have obviously never seen him play saluki. I have seen him play. I don't really think he ever took a shot within 10 feet at the KMOX shootout. And that was against a shorter Van-Far team. If you really think he can play power forward much in the A-10, you must be the one that has never seen him play.

Considering how well Ian has developed in his first 2 years, KB's improvement his senior year, IO's vast improvement and increased toughness and Tom's play last year I'd say Coach Thorpe is doing a damn good job developing the bigs. 3star_recruit
You're both right. He is Civic Memorial's tallest player so of course he plays inside defensively in high school. But offensively he's a long-range gunner and as you mentioned he's an earthbound 6'5 player so he will have to play small forward in college. cujaysfan
i think a better idea would be to bring in an offensive guru asst coach. leave brad to oversee the whole thing - and coach the D - worked very well for coach al maguire at marquette. kids in st louis might know bonner - but doubt he has that name recognition anywhere else. if AB really wants to be at SLU is one thing - but that doesn't seem to be the case, yet. Agree with Roy. The kids might not know who AB is but all their coaches and advisors do. There is the presence that Bonner brings just walking in the door. Second, there is the name dropping: he can talk about playing for the Knicks under coach Pat Riley, 318 games played in the NBA. It would have to help with recruiting a big man, has to. All this stuff about AB stating he has to make $100k plus, it's all rumor. Nobody credible has stepped forward saying they heard it direct from AB. I know definitely AB is playing at least one more year in PR / Europe and SLU currently has no coaching vacancies ... but all things change. I'd love to see AB at SLU in some capacity. BillikenButch
There is no doubt in my mind that having AB on the bench would improve our access to legitimate inside players. I do not know if he could help develop these kids, but I assume he might. He is articulate, passionate about basketball in St. Louis, and he knows the game. I agree that no positions are open at this time, but they will be soon. Beane will not be around forever (I think he has head coach written all over him) and Thorpe has enough potential to land in another spot. If we had a good season next year, I could see offers coming their way. If we have another bad season I could see them begin to wonder about the wisdom of staying here. Quality Is Job 1
I know this post is way, way, way late (I've been going through some transitions and am weeks behind on this board), but I have to respond to this post, old or not. JJ, Anthony Bonner did not play in Puerto Rico or Europe this past season. He was in St. Louis all winter. I saw him personally. I heard him tell Gerald Jones (Berkeley's head coach and a former Vashon teammate of his) about his coaching plans for next year and beyond. Furthermore, Gerald has told me that SLU boosters are trying to get Bonner to coach at SLU in 2005-06. I don't know what will happen, but I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Bonner is a graduate assistant on the bench this coming season. Bonner helped coach the Missouri all-stars to a victory in the Riverwar game.
jjray
Gerald Jones is by far a better source than me. I just had a short chat with him a few months ago and he said he was on his way to PR to play another season (summer) and said something about playing in Europe (possibily Greece) after the season in PR ended. I too was curious about the chances of AB being added to the SLU staff in some capacity but, as he sounded definite about being out of the country the upcoming season, I didn't broach the subject.
