2-0 Penn State at the half. Billikens gave up two on goals that shouldn’t have been that easy. Hannah Sawyer got taken out on a play, went down hard and stayed there, I would guess her day is done on concussion protocol, she did get up with help of the training staff and left on her own power. Looked like she got her bell rung pretty good. Billikens had some chances, but couldn’t convert to goals. Still looks to be a competitive game if they can get a goal.

She got her bell rung a couple games ago, too, and didn't come back in. Hope she's okay - again.

Penn State.

Penn State had 5 players drafted in the NWSL after last season. A Goalkeeper, Center Back, 2 Outside Backs, and a Forward. (Asman, , Wheeler, Wiesner, Linnehan)

But it’s Penn State. They return several others, they added several transfers, Freshmen, and they have a strong player development system. Penn State has 12 Redshirt players. 6 grad students.

Penn State is a mix of returning starters, high minute players, less experienced players. transfers, and a few Freshmen.

Redshirt Senior Kaitlyn MacBean returns after scoring 2 goals in Penn State’s 4-3 OT win over SLU in the Sweet 16 game. She already has 6 goals this season. She’s a highly skilled physical power forward that can’t be left alone or 1v1 near the 18. She likes to use her physicality to draw fouls and pk’s too.

The other attacking player to watch is Tennessee transfer Jordan Fusco, a playmaking and scoring central attacking midfielder. Have to front and double her from receiving distribution. Make Penn State build wide without going through her.

Penn State has been playing a 3-5-2 this year. Their coach adjusts formations based on personnel. Last year, with 2 of the best outside backs nationally, PSU played 4 in back. Some other coaches prefer a set formation.

One outside is a North Carolina transfer. Their Center Back is a UPenn transfer, and their other outside back is familiar, Mieke Schiemann. The outside backs switch sides sometimes. Schiemann is the 5’11! physical defender who tied the game with SLU last year with 3 minutes remaining on a set piece header. She is by far their best set piece aerial player. Have to focus on her with set pieces more than anyone else. On the flip side, she is vulnerable to pace on the outside from SLU’s attacking wings as long as SLU can spread out Penn State’s back 3.

Fontenot, the UPenn transfer is athletic and good in the middle but she lacks size.

Lapi and Martin at defensive mid. Fusco at CAM, MacBean up top. The others will vary as PSU will sub on the wings. Damico and White will probably get a first look with Wilson. Lots of pace on the wings without the size. Cooke, Kulpa,  Kershner all will rotate to play opposite of MacBean

Penn State recruits some of the best Freshmen in the country. many of which won’t be playing.

3-5-2 PSU attack.

  1. They will play through their defensive mids up the middle to Fusco. This is first and direct approach. SLU has had some issues there.
  2. Back line diagonal wide to the wings who then play through Fusco or MacBean. Smaller faster wings. Size up top and in the middle.

Despite playing a 3-5-2, PSU has been aggressive with it, pressing and forcing turnovers. 2-3 up top pressing.

SLU meeds a front foot start, full 90. Spread out and isolate their back 3, playing over the 5 midfielders. Get more shots up and dangerous service with their new keepers. Extra focus on MacBean and Fusco. But everyone on their team is capable too.

Penn State is another SLU opponent that is playing one of the toughest schedules nationally. They are a well respected college soccer blue blood with 17 straight NCAA appearances under Dambach. A National Title, a few Final Fours. And several other deeper NCAA tourney runs.

Offense has been clicking early for Penny State.

Great opportunity for SLU against a high level team.

Penn State 2 SLU 1

It was by far SLU’s best played game of the season. And it was also the first loss of the season. For much of the game, SLU was sharp in distribution, combination play, positional defending. SLU created copious amounts of dangerous chances. But the finishes have to be more efficient, especially amongst SLU’s best players. And, a few early transitional defensive mistakes ended up being the difference.

…………..

The game opened very well for SLU. Lots of pressure, pressing, forcing turnovers deep in Penn State territory.

3rd minute. Harmless middle if the field play, Heckel made a nice tackle. And instead of moving forward with big wide open space, she turned and played the ball back to wing Amelia White of Penn State who is fast and she buzzed through Lang and Le and placed a nice ground through ball for MacBean. MacBean wasn’t marked closely. She split Stram and Schreiber, and she was 1v1 v Stram low corner far post. 1-0 completely against the run of play. 2 other times Heckel turned the ball over deep in SLU’s end. in the middle of the field. One result was a free kick from 20. Another was a shot high and wide inside the 18.

7th minute with SLU deep in Penn State’s end, Wilson launched a ball up the line for MacBean near midfield, isolated 1v1 with Heckel. She outraced Heckel up the line, and she turned around Stram too, shot just wide low far post. Luebbert had done well to get up the field at left back, but that’s the draw back of pinching in there with outside backs.

Transition defense. Leaving MacBean or Fusco unmarked or 1v1 with a center back were big defensive keys to the game. Instead of zonal marking, it’s more effective to find those two players.

10th minute set piece corner for Penn State. Damico was left unmarked near post by Stram. Header off of the crossbar bar.

13th minute Larson moved up to the middle to press the back 3 with Gaebe. Ball swung around wide to Damico who one timed a pass to the corner for Fusco as Luebbert approached. This left Fusco 1v1 with Lang who went out to cover. She overpowered Lang, ran straight at Heckel who gave too much space backed down well inside the 18. Fusco laid the ball off to MacBean who was posting up Stram in the middle of the 18. Easy turn and finish. A little more containment vs risk, from Luebbert and Lang and it’s possibly a less dangerous chance with more help defense. Those kinds of chances and risks sometimes are better deep in the offensive end. 2-0

20th minute Luebbert played it up the line for Gaebe in space. She split both Schiemann and Fontenot, in alone for an easy goal from the 6. But she didn’t get the shot off quick enough, and Fontentot made a last second tackle to prevent the goal.  Her rebound was then blocked too. Some nice combination play a minute later, and Luebbert launched a shot from distance that was barely tipped over the goal, headed for the top corner. Good examples of taking advantage of these opportunities mentioned pregame.

SLU spent a lot of time 35 yards from Penn State’s goal, not effectively breaking down 7 defenders.

Sawyer was drilled by Lapi in the 37th minute. SLU likes to use Sawyer off of the bench midway through the half. Unfortunately 2 goals later, and quick injury after entering and that was it for her on the day.

Great combination play from SLU in the 42nd minute. Le wide to Sarnowski who played it back to Miller in the middle. Ground through ball low to Smith whose 15 yard shot was tipped away by the diving keeper.

Several set pieces and corners but not SLU wasn’t efficient enough with finishes. Luebbert launched a far post set piece volleyed just wide by Kim early in the half.

Overall chances were pretty even. 4 to 6 quality Penn Stare chances and they finished 2 of them. SLU didn’t do enough with possession inside the 35-40 of Penn State. But they ended up with at least 4 high level chances of their own in the half.
…………..
2nd half.
……………
46th minute diagonal ball over the top for Larson 1v1  right side of the box. Her shot gets blocked  over the goal.

47th minute Houck long ball into the box for Smith marked by Fontentot. Clear intercepted by Larson and a handball called on Herr. Le PK 2-1 2 minutes into the 2nd half.

A couple of close offsides calls for SLU at the 18 in the next few minutes.

49th minute. Simon forced a turnover inside the 40, up to Gaebe, at the 18. She put her blast just over the bar. (Lots of high misses this season from Gaebe.)

51st minute, great through ball from Le up the middle to Simon. She was knocked down but the ensuing play was her pass to Larson left side of the box. But she didn’t get all of it, easy save close in chance. Lots of good combination.

52nd minute. Larson’s cross deflected by the defense off of the cross bar. Rebound shot by  was blocked. Rebound shot by Lang was over the bar.

53rd minute. SLU forced a turnover after a ling ball from Houck was a yard too far for Gaebe. She walked around Schiemann, hits one from inside the 18 over the bar far post.

SLU had as many or more high level chances in the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half as Penny State did the entire first half. And that doesn’t count some of SLU’s chances in the first or possession. But only 1 goal to show for it at the time and for the entire game.

60th minute. Fusco had a chance from 20 off of a feed fron a Gleason run. Save Puricelli.

62nd minute. Le again nice playing getting  back to defend Fusco in space, and turn her over.

64th minute Luebbert long cross back post for Le. But Poorbaugh was there to catch it.

67th minute MacBean had a good chance save Puricelli. Through ball in space from White. Again, back pedaling in transition defense was an issue as way too much space was given to MacBean between defenders. Unlucky as the initial pass bounced off of Le to Fusco in space.

76th minute. More strong pressure and combination play for a several minute stretch from SLU. Give and go from Larson with Le back to Larson. Shot from 10 yards just off of the post and bar.

78th minute. Le outlet wide to Larson yet again. She beat Martin and Wolfe inside the 18. She was fouled from behind by Wolfe. PK. Gaeb’s PK was a diving stop by Poorbaugh who read the kick correctly to her left. Still 2-1.

80th minute. Le again to Larson down the right flank. Edge of the box cross to Simon all alone from 10 yards out but she couldn’t get the shot off quickly enough, and was blocked.

82nd minute. Puricelli turned it over and made the ensuing save.

86th minute Stram long ball to Larson 8 yards in front of the Penn State goal. She was pulled down by Fontenot. No call.

Several more chances in and around the 18 off of ling service in the final few minutes for SLU.

Creighton Bluejays

New coach, new team. Jimmy Walker is in his first year. High energy, good recruiter, whose teams play hard.

Creighton has 12 transfers, not all in the same year, but many, from a wide variety of places. Walker worked the portal immediately after getting hired. They also have 11 International players.

They will mix up formations based on a variety of things. personnel, matchup, i juries etc... having played a 3-5-2, and a 4-2-3-1 thus far.

Their 4-2-3-1 is organized, and uses the width of the field. If they play that, then this could be a game where SLU can try to build combination play through the middle.

Mondiri is their high volume shot taker forward anywhere inside of 25. They like to get in space behind the defense via Levine or Azumi in the middle. Both are very capable on the ball, distriubuting or scoring in the middle. Radke likes to push up and play higher as a right back. Creighton will play a lot of players. And against SLU they’ll meed to do so for fresh players. They will try to get service around the 18, where hustle plays can also get them more offense.

Defending, not great with set piece defense. 1st or 2nd chances. Can be overpowered physically and with pace outside with what SLU brings.

Creighton is solid, high floor, low ceiling. The game will be part of the annual Socctoberfest doubleheader with the Men’s team. So there will be some added festivities there.

If SLU plays like it did vs Penn State, SLU will win many games this year.

Zalac has been their keeper. a transfer from Louisville.
Radke and Kulick at outside backs.
Solomon and Offer are center back.
LeVine and Murray Powell in the defensive midfield
Westlie and Downing on the wings. They will mix it up there. Downing the small quick pressing wing. Westlie and Mallory whi brings more size. Azumi finds the spaces in the middle. Mondirii up top. Judkins (defender) will play too.

SLU 0 Creighton 0

4-2-3-1 for both. SLU switched to a 4-1-3-2 in the 2nd half.

Bouncy windy turf game. 27 healthy players dressed. 3 injured players did not. (Sawyer, Welker, Jackson)

The game had the feel of a 3-0 SLU win but that never happened.

When Creighton lost a lopsided game to Nebraska, all of Nebraska’s goals and chances were often either set piece headers or volleys out of the air, or 1st, 2nd 3rd chances from wide service. SLU hasn’t been as efficient with those types of opportunities.
……………

It took all of 5 minutes for the ref to stop the game and warn Creighton coach Jimmy Walker about his animated behavior. Working the officials was effective for him throughout the game. Some soft fouls were called on SLU in the final 3rd. A whopping 34 fouls were called in the game.

……………

Creighton did a good job in the first half of fouling SLU 35-40 yards from goal to force free kicks. And they also were able to force corner kicks. This reduced SLU’s shot totals and it slowed their transition. SLU has not been dangerous on set pieces this season and that continued qt Creighton. It had been a SLU strength the past few seasons, both hews balls. and cleaning up the 2nd or 3rd opportunity.

Maybe a half dozen high level chances all half for SLU. None for Creighton. A few each for Gaebe, Larson, and even 1 for Brinkman.

A fair half time score would have been 1-0 or possibly 2-0 for SLU.

Creighton moved Manriki back to defensive midfield, and they played an outside back defender on the wing. Very conservative defensive personnel.
……………
2nd half changes. 4-1-3-2 for SLU.

Heavy pressure from SLU early in the 2nd half. Larson had two great early 2nd half opportunities. Missed wide from 8 yards after a combo from Houck to Gaebe. Transition long run from Simon. One timer instead of walking around the defender.

A great third Larson chance all 10 minutes into the 2nd half: Combo tic tac toe Gaebe to Gary to Simon to Larson in alone left post from 8 yards and she grazed the near post and side netting.

SLU goal kick 56th minute. Midfield Smith to Gaebe off to the races. She beat two defenders, Solomon and Offer, she cut in at the 6, and she ripped a low hard blast that somehow hit the shin of the sprawling keeper, no goal. Unbelievable.

58th minute. Larson from the right side 1v1  from 12 yards, leaping save tipped over the goal.

All of this heavy pressure from SLU came after changing to a 4-1-3-2 formation. Playing 2 forwards, Gaebe and Larson together up top. Gary and Smith on the wings. Simon in the middle, and Le as the lone defensive midfielder. SLU also tried Smith in the middle with Gary and Schwartz with Gaebe and Larson up top.

60th minute Le wins a header at midfield, up Larson who plays a give and go with Gary back up the line to Larson. Hannah cut in from the side of the box at the end line. Her short cross to a running Gaebe who went down in front of the keeper. Looked like a foul from behind by Offer. Ref stopped play, reviewed it. No PK. I was okay with the no call.

Throw in to Gaebe. Triple teamed with her back to the goal from 12 yards, she turned left foot shot was well over the goal.

SLU subbed out Larson in the 69th minute and SLU went back to a 4-2-3-1. And that slowed the offensive dominance of the previous 24 minutes. 5 minutes later, Larson subs back into the game. Still a 4-2-3-1 instead of the much more effective 4-1-3-2. But offense returned. Gaebe a mice pass to Kim who cut in the middle of the18 around Solomon in alone. But the Creighton keeper sprinted out to prevent the shot and easy goal. Great risk taking anticipation to save a goal to dive at the 10.

Creighton had a chance in the 75th minute. Downing wide to Offer and her cross back to Downing but she missed the ball on a wide open header. Again, transition defense, SLU wasn’t marking man to man. SLU had the numbers but left her alone middle of the box. By far Creighton’s best chance of the game to that point.

SLU drew several more fouls 35/40 yards from the Creighton goal. Service launched in the box and knocked around mostly harmless.

81st minute. There was a brisk wind in the face of SLU for much of the 2nd half. In this small stretch, SLU was popping up a few clears that the wind blew right back. Pass back to Puricelli. She fanned on the clear, popped it up left side to Manriki. She was able to get through Le and she launched a 35 yard shot off of the crossbar bar that bounced straight up in the air and bounced out of bounds. Levine then launched a laser shot from 30 yards running downhill that spun back, caught by Puricelli right on.

Gaebe a minute later best two defenders left side from 22 yards far post, leaping save.

83rd minute, Smith up to Simon, to Gaebe, she cut in on 2 defenders left side of the 18, chips a pass to Larson 1v1 at rhe 6 back to goal, but flicked away by the defender to a scrum in the box. Simon goes down. No PK. Again a good no PK call in my opinion.

88th minute Le was fouled by Levine, as she walks the end line towards to box. Instead a foul and card was called on Le. That happened a few times in the game where SLU was called for a foul when Creighton grabbed and held while SLU tried to pull away.

89th minute, free kick for Creighton from 25 yards. Good hit from Manriki but right at Puricelli. No problem. Creighton had 4 high level scoring chances all game total. 3 were shots from distance.

Could have been a 3-0 or 4-0 game for SLU. Easily needed to be 2-0.

Credit to Creighton whose back 6 and keeper played hard, organized. with few mistakes.
