Bay Area Billiken
Reposting here from a while back in the hopes that someone in the SLU Athletic Dept. reads this Board. Rick Majerus would be wise to place a call to Bill Self in Lawrence, Kansas this morning, to try to get a basketball series between KU and SLU. After yesterday's developments re Mizzou to the SEC, Self may be in a more receptive mood vis-a-vis playing SLU. This could be home and home, or even home, home, and Kansas City, would be acceptable. Another option would be St. Louis and Kansas City, if KU would prefer that. The situation appears ripe for such a phone call asap.
Tonka
That would be a nice slap in the face to Mizzou. However, RM has said numerous times that Self said he would never play him. Would his mind change now? Not sure. We'd really have to have a nice season or put together a couple nice seasons for it to ever happen. Bay Area Billiken
Now Self has a real reason to play SLU. ...
Bobby Metzinger
The KC Sports Commission and the St. Louis Sports Commission should bring these two sides to the table -- we know that a SLU-KU matchup at the Sprint Center or at the EJ Dome won't bring in as much $ as a football game between MU and KU at Arrowhead, but it could be a springboard. I don't understand your logic in terms of KU's interest. Spite? That's a bit thin. And, SLU is not yet in a higher profile position for anyone to be interested other than SLU fans. If SLU ever played KU any time soon, it'd be similar to Duke. You go to KU every time and play or it doesn't happen from a KU perspective. I can see KU playing an elite National reputation program in a game in KC, and or St. Louis. A school like SLU needs several years of being a high level program, similar to a Xavier or Gonzaga...and even then getting a game would still be a big challenege. While I'm all for the enthusiasm, and encourage the efforts, objectively speaking, the only interest at this time imo would be from SLU. Clock_Tower
Court. Not just spite. Also, the St. Louis market/game within the State of Missouri. Believe the premise of this thread is that KU draws heavily upon both athletes and students from St. Louis area and would find some benefits playing by playing SLU. Whether these benefits are enough is another issue but certainly worth a phone call IMO. Playing home and away games against Mizzou with games in Columbia, MO is a showcase for the St. Louis athlete and an enjoyable game for the KU alums living here in St. Louis. Such presence in the state of Missouri helped KU land Ryan Robertson, allowed Tyler Hansboro (sp?) to follow Roy Williams at KU before following Roy to UNC and allows KU to get in on the area's top talent like Beal, etc. The deal won't work if based upon spite. As you also point out, KU could find more attractive and proven basketball programs like X and Gonzaga but these are not located in St. Louis, MO and Cincy, OH and Seattle, WA have not been similar recruiting spots for KU, full of alums, in the past. For-DaLove
Courtside is correct. KU doesn't need a series with us at all. Sorry, but it's true.
ACE
If Ben McLemore ever suits up for them and they have other high profile recruiting targets in St. Louis, I could see it happening.
For-DaLove
Schools like KU can recruit anywhere without worrying about playing a game in the area. I would love to see it happen. KU just doesn't need it to.
STLfan
I think $$$ will win out and MU/KU will end up playing despite any hurt feelings. It's a big game and Mizzou leaving KU and the Big 12 has only intensified the hate. The TV networks will love it.
slu72
Better yet maybe now is the time to approach Mizzery about making SLU an annual rivalry to replace KU.
cheeseman
Nothing but pipe dreams about KU and MU. Move on
