  1. People are complaining about May's comments, but they are just that, comments.  If he has the backing, I think he'd be willing to make a move.  He has shown the willingness to make tough calls with coaching changes.  He fired Sodie after a 20-win season and Stone after she showed significant progress with the program but couldn't get the team over the hump. The Stone firing particularly felt like a head scratcher at the time.  Now look where we're at.

If the money wants Ford out, I think that's what will happen.

Let's also see what happens this week.  Hopefully the seniors are as hungry as they sound.

im actually hoping he gives perkins the night off.   he isnt right.   it's pretty obvious something physically is hampering him.  there is a slight limp.   he doesnt have he burst of speed we saw 2 years ago and he definitely isnt jumping as quick or high.   i dont think we need him vs paul quinn so save him for Auburn.

I feel like I want Perkins to play as much as possible. He needs to get his legs back and into game shape. That'll come with time on the court during games.

OK SShoe, you have an ample income and are motivated to donate $1000 per year to SLU. However you would prefer to split the amount you give to the Billiken Club in half in order to give the other half to a NIL collective. I would assume the Billiken Club would not like that and you might wind up without a Billiken Club membership.

    Ha, ha, ha, ha.

SShoe, your thoughts are nice, but I am afraid they are unrealistic. For one thing coaches are under contract for a specific number of years. To reduce their salary you have to start by buying the remaining time left on the contract, and then renegotiate a salary at a lower level. Dollars to doughnuts (nowadays doughnuts are probably worth more than a dollar) that Ford would not stay around to enjoy his lower salary.

I am not asking you to believe this, but money has to be available before it can donated for NILs, facilities, programs and/or coacsh salaries unless the donor takes a loan. Do you really think anyone is going to take a loan to donate money for NILs, facilities, programs and/or coach salaries?

I didn't say it'd happen overnight.  But if I annually give $1,000 to the Billiken Club and there's a collective available, I might split my contribution into $500 increments, or something like that.

Cheeseman, my comment about NILs referred to my opinion, which you or anyone else does not have to share, that the economy is going down the tubes and private money (unless you happen to be Bezos or Gates) is going to get tight. I do not see a growing NIL based system, whatever the players may want, without a flourishing economy. I am not talking about competing in the NIL arena, I am talking about a drought of money being directed into NILs.

NIL money isn't necessarily going to come from a growing pot of money.  Instead, as more contributions go towards a collective, I think you'll see donations for facilities, programs, and coach's salaries likely drop.  I mean, if the NIL money becomes everything, how important is it to pay a coach top dollar or have a sweet locker room?

Every year there was at least one mid-major with a top 6 seed.  None of them made it.   It's easier to be the hunter of a high-major than to  be hunted by one.

Top 25 is about bragging rights. If you're interested in actually making a run, history tells us you're better off being underseeded or a top 4 seed (which means you're one of the best teams in the country).

Hold up.  A definition of mid-major may be needed here. I don't think I'd call St. Peter's a mid-major and I'd like to say we have way more in common with a Houston or Creighton (both made long tourney runs in recent years) than St. Peters or Oral Roberts.

it seemed they were pretty limited yesterday.   didnt have beer or soda.  just water and gatorade.   and the only food i saw was the popcorn.

they are planning to have at least that friday though according to the lady at the stand.

    They had beer

  8. The one thing about last year was that we had trouble generating any type of offense when Yuri was not in the game.  Assuming Perkins is healthy, I don't expect that to be the case so much this year.  Maybe he's not bringing the ball up the court, but he can be the one to create, either for himself or for others.

With one scholarship remaining and a clear need for a D. Jones type back up PG, I would think there are quite a few PGs who have one year of eligibility remaining who would like to be a part of a top 20-25 , NCAA qualifying team for their last year.

While it's only on paper, I think today's 2 commitments solidify that preseason expectation.

Don't know who's out there, but I'd probably prefer a freshman PG.  Someone that's willing to sit a year and learn.

Bake sales and car dealers tossing a couple hundy aren't going to keep SLU competitive in the A10.

I get what he is saying.  If that is type of thing you are going to limit the program to because it is "easier to swallow", you might as well go back to the Horizon league or drop to D3.  That is what you are relegating the program's status to if you won't play by the new rules.

That's not really what we're suggesting.  These are just the things the average fan can do to help because let's face it, a billikens.com fundraiser isn't enough either.  The majority of it is up to the athletic department to connect the athlete and big donor $s if that's what's needed.

I think the money needs to come from business. Companies who are already have advertising or PR budgets. An IMO's pizza using SLU players instead of a Jason Tatum. The car dealers having signing events. Royal Bank taking some of Ramsey's money and giving it to Thatch. Bob McCormick  hiring Billiken players to advertise and work his camps. The Chess Club doing a promo  with Kramer. Be creative.

Was thinking about this yesterday.  In addition to the above, how about places like Humphrey's (when it reopens) having NIL exchange nights.  20% of proceeds during and after games go to the exchange. That type of thing is a little easier to swallow.

Court cases have held that players have a legal right to monetize their image and likeness. This isn't an NCAA decision.

Exactly.  You can't regulate how much a player makes in NIL money.  You can regulate transfers though. Start with that. If a coach leaves, they get a waiver and don't have to sit a year.  Easiest fix in sports.

The Majerus years were the pinnacle of what I'll ever watch at SLU. That was the best time. From the 19 points at GW to the final presser with the players and coaches weeping to watching them bring home A10 championships and even Jett talking smack on twitter about SVU.

Players that play for the team and even stick around(think Highmark, Claggett, Jett, etc.) are not going to be that common going forward. The game just is not the same as it used to be, and normally when I hear that said I say "baloney" here I think that's true, because the money has changed. The money is what matters.

I feel like the money has always been there.  It's just become so much easier to take it.

  14. This one truly makes me sad.  I don't blame Yuri at all for this.  Many of us would do the same if we were in his shoes.  I just feel like this is sort of the beginning of the end.  College sports is already the ultimate laundry sport (cheer for the jerseys), but in most cases you kind of knew what to expect even if they were only here for a year or two.  Now we have no idea when or if a player will leave and every year we'll just become more jaded/pessimistic with each surprise departure.

My guess is that Ford will get a better than adequate replacement at PG.  Hell, he may even get two of them now that he has minutes to offer.  But getting a one- or two-year replacement player doesn't compare to watching players like Jett, Evans, Mitchell, etc. for 4 years.  I'm not sure what the NCAA can do at this point, but the future of college sports for anyone that is not a fan of a Duke or an Alabama looks pretty f'ing bleak.

Now we’re selling sitting on the bench for 2 years. Name one acceptable pg willing to play 6 minutes a game for 2 years? Marten chose Indiana State over that option.

The answer is not necessarily recruiting another traditional, past-first PG.  Go after a combo guard that can handle it and score it, wouldn't mind playing alongside Yuri.  Majerus' teams had 3 legit PGs on the team.
