In football, they will pretty much be irrelevant. In basketball, they will likely be a multi-bid league which makes them a "major." In basketball, we're looking at 6 conferences (one of those being the new Pac 12) which you can count on to be multi-bid leagues and every other league typically being a one-bid league.

I recently saw an interview with new Utah coach Alex Jensen about a variety of topics. He touched briefly about his time with SLU, but I would be interested in hearing a 15-20 minute interview just about his time at SLU. He clearly has a fondness for Majerus, so perhaps he would be agreeable to do it in the offseason.

A few years ago, I'm saying take the toughest schedule, but in today's college basketball world where it has been made nearly impossible for non P6 schools to earn at large bids, the answer is to have the easiest conference schedule. It offers a better chance at a double bye - thus a better shot at winning the conference tournament, which is essentially now the only path to an NCAA bid.

I guess we are in the territory with the program where I’m supposed to be excited with this non-conference match up….but I’m just not.
Feels like we are already in the mode where we Gotta win 30 games or win the A-10 tourney to get a bid
This is the reality of just about every non-P6 program now, unless a major change happens, like expanding the NCAA Tourney field.

@ARon: Since whne did CJS gain a reputation for developing big men? I missed that. Unless Diakite brings a skill set like Avila, then I get it.
I think you are really overthinking this idea of CJS "developing" big men. I think it's more of a case of showing a recruit how a big can fit into his system by pointing to Avila. No different than what CJS did on the video of Trey Green. He didn't say he "developed" Swope, he simply pointed to him as an example of how another undersized guard like Green can fit into his system.

Interesting note on Davidson. They have an away game scheduled at Kansas. No mention of a return game at Davidson College or even in Charlotte at a N site. So is this the future of Mid-Majors attempting to schedule P5 schools, one way tickets?
Would you be in favor of SLU scheduling away only game(s) v P5?
I don't think it's the "future" - it's pretty much the present. For Davidson, getting a home game against St. Mary's is excellent and realistically about the best a program like us could hope for in today's environment.

I’ve previously said we needed one more big on the roster- some disagreed - glad Schertz agreed with me

I have been an advocate of expansion as the most viable path to get more true mid majors into the Dance, BUT I'm concerned that what is being talked about now wouldn't go far enough and the fact that a P6 conference is driving the discussion is NOT going to be helpful to mid majors. I'm not sure why mid majors aren't beating the drum about this and making sure their voices are heard, and advocating that when the field expands, that some of those invitations to the Dance go to deserving mid majors, as opposed to a 10th place team in a P6 conference. In the end it may not matter, but mid majors should at least go down swinging before being rendered completely obsolete.

And one of those by a lot. Something tells me had they played Bama to around a 10 point loss that may have changed things.
It was the second game of the season, on the road and Avila did not play due to injury.
Do you think a a P5 school with a NET of 28 would have been forgiven for such a loss under those circumstances? Absolutely, they would have. I seriously doubt ISU losing by 10 would've have changed anything. The Committee would just have another excuse ready.

I get your point but honestly I am not sure how you schedule will do mid majors a lot of good. If they are determined to make the Dance a P5 event then that is what will happen no matter who you play or what your ranking is. A handful may make it in but the odds are pretty slim for mid majors. The deck just seems to be stacked against you.
Bingo! Schertz and ISU played Alabama and Michigan State in the non-conference in the season they had a NET 28 and that STILL wasn't good enough to get an at large.

I used to really enjoy following high school recruiting. Unfortunately, those days are gone for me. I now only care about the portal. I'm not sure if anyone else feels the same way. I wish I felt differently.

While it falls directly on the bus company, the residual blame should be spread to Athletics.
At least they didn't have the drunk lady who drove off at Bonnie.

Players from the portal are still making commitments. I haven't been as dialed in as when we were shopping - which now seems like quite a while ago.
Former Schertz commit Christian Nitu went from Florida State to Washington. He did little his freshman season on a bad FSU team.
Bonnies landed a productive forward from TN Tech. Duquesne landed a UT-Martin player who averaged 16 ppg last season. Mason got a kid who played sparingly at Vandy his freshman season, then took a redshirt season at UT this past season.

If it were that easy Arkansas would've won the National Championship last year.
Money is a component but so is coaching, organizational support, player cohesion, a little luck.
So naive, it’s almost cute.

With enough money it would be easy to assemble the best players in the country, for any team, in any conference. A billionaire could out spend everyone.
BYU is trying it.

I'm not saying that you would be wrong, but are you saying that teams like Dayton and SLU do not have legit shot at a national title?
Yes, I would say SLU and Dayton do not have a legit shot at a national title in today's college basketball environment. Not impossible, but pretty close. Hell, schools like SLU and Dayton having a shot at even earning an at large bid has been shrinking in recent years.

It would be exceptionally hard and expanding the tournament to more games makes it even harder. More games less deep Cinderellas.
SDSU was close
San Diego State is a large public university and they have had the $ to invest in hoops going back to Steve Fisher - hardly a "Cinderella." They are joining the Pac 12 and about to officially become part of the P6 (multi at-large bid) conferences.

I missed it from a few days ago, but Kennard Davis signed with BYU, which at first thought struck me as very odd, but then I remembered reading that BYU is a going all Blue Chips in this NIL era: https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/43693446/byu-basketball-aj-dybantsa-kevin-young-boosters-nil

That's who we will probably get
Aren't we supposed to have a home game with them next year?

I expect Jones to start. I would put Warlick in the mop up minutes category, unless there are a bunch of injuries again. Agreed that frontcourt size could be an issue. I was hoping for one more big. I hope we take care of the ball better and aren't so sloppy this season. And a question I raised, I'll be interested in figuring out who will be our best defenders.

JG just keeps playing his game- great effort, do what's needed. Great article on yahoo sports today that featured him as well. Taj79 is a grumpy old man.
100% Taj is stuck in 1977. Goodwin is a GREAT SLU story.

Thanks. This is not a formula for the success of the mid majors. It seems to be a formula for the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer.
Indeed. The list I provided of transfer rankings was questioned. because it didn't align with a poster's premise. Here is another list, which ranks the transfers before their final destination is known. https://www.on3.com/transfer-portal/industry/basketball/
It sill highlights the same dynamic. You have to get past the top 200 ranked players to start seeing some P6 to nonP6 school transfers.

I expect that we will have more balance scoring this year, and not rely so much on the three-headed monster to carry the scoring load, but what about defense?
We're up by 1 with 30 seconds to go, the other team has the ball, what is our best defensive lineup? Some of this will depend on the opponent's lineup, but Anya and Otieno could be a good place to start with Robbie taking a seat and I like the potential of McCottry on D, but I have no idea about the defensive reputation of the 6 transfers. Which guards would we want out there?

We're not Louisville and Mizzou sure is hell is not UK - I don't see that happening. Both of those schools are public institutions as well, perhaps making it easier to apply pressure at the state level. A stunt like that would seem more likely between Mizzou and Mo State, but I don't see that happening either. It's just not that important.
