  1. Texas A&M has a nice band....but it does not compare to SLU's pep band. Now the Aggie dancers, that's a different story. Skipper, your backing the wrong group with that bunch in Austin.
  2. IV did not show well yesterday (against Lamar).....he was flat from the get-go. BH had a good effort and the best thing is he likes to shoot away from the basket. We will need both to play well against A&M. When A&M is on their A-game they are a handful with good shooters and good size. Gillespie has a touch of Bobby Huggins in him.....******* about nearly everything.
  3. cheese....there are about a dozen SLU fans here at the games....where are you sitting?
  4. Law said in the local College Station paper the his coach (Billy Gillespie) has all the players "on a one-possession contract" so he was not surprised to be pulled from the game. Imagine that, a bright young coach valuing each possesion of the ball and each defensive effort!
  5. SLU can't dictate the tempo of the game when the opponent has the ball. Yes, we can continue to play an aggressive M2M defense, but if A&M want to work for a good shot.....they are holding the ball. I believe A&M will push the ball at every opportunity.
  6. The 2006-2007 Lady Billikens best player is 6-1 senior Tyler McIlwraith, a second team All Atlantic-10 forward. Tyler was recruited by Jill Pizzotti.
  7. can you recommend a couple of good restaurants near the Texas A&M campus or downtown.....possible a couple of Mexican or Southwest food places? Thanks
  8. 1. Indeed, Coach Shimmey is a very impressive person and coach. She is particularly impressive with the positive energy she uses on the coaching sidelines. If you attend a SLU ladies game, a great seat is upstairs on the corner at the end of the SLU bench, as it allows you to see and hear Coach Shimmey throughout the game. If she ever decides to leave....Coach Shimmey will be leave her capable successor a strong and talented roster and a new on-campus arena. 2. I have attended between 75-80% of all West Pine practices todate. imo, as of Nov14 none of the four true PFs are ready to replace LM on the court. SLU normally runs four perimeter players and IV. LM is a perimeter player; however, defensively he is asked to guard the opposing PF. When JJ returns 100% healthy, he can play the fourth perimeter spot and better defend the opposing PF. However, JJ isn't ready. To play any of the other three young PFs today simply weakens the team offensively. Every SLU player, plus three walk-ons, gets 20 hours of practice time each week to impress Coach Soderberg. The players that get major game minutes are the players that perform the best during the 20 practice hours and the players that form the most productive and cohesive Billiken unit.
  9. Joe, you stated...."It's the department's job, and certainly not the students', to create the basketball-going tradition that is currently non-existent". Just curious.....who is responsible for the great Cardinal tradition? The owners in the 40's, Mr. Busch, A-B, Bill DeWitt? Or was it the long line of great players and loyal fans from around the Midwest....or was it a combination of all three? Who was responsible for the Big Red tradition in the Hart, Dierdorf, Jackie Smith, Mel Gray, etc. years. Was it Bill Bidwell, or more so the players and the Midwest pro-football fans? Who was responsible for the exciting Blues hockey tradition of the Brett Hull era....whichever owner it was at that time? Or was it Hull, Oates, Shanny, Sutter, Bernie F.,etc., along with the loyal hockey fans in metro St. Louis? I'm surprised that you see the students having a zero, or a near zero role, ("and certainly not the students") in establishing a Billiken tradition. imo, college students play a significant role in any school tradition.
  10. I don't really know...... has Illinois replaced Luther Head, Deron (sp?) Williams, or Dee Brown in kind? has Marquette replaced DeWayne Wade, Travis Diener or Steve Novak in kind? did Bradley replace Marcellus (sp?) Sommerville and Patrick O'Bryant in their last recruiting class? does SIU-C have another Darren Brooks on their roster today? I know Duke and North Carolina reload pretty quickly, but how about the above schools?
  11. A very good year....the ladies should be proud of their season. I look forward to the day were SLU has 100% of the allowable NCAA scholarships. Currently, they are at about 67%. With tuition in the $30k+ range, partial scholarships still leave alot for the parents to cover. I'm guessing most of the SLU ladies qualify for academic schoalrships as well.
  12. Kordes was hired by Woolard in Jan04. Levick came on board in June04.
  13. SLU's v-ball team won twice on the road (at X and at Dayton) this weekend to gain a share of the A-10 regular season championship. They will probably get the top seed in the A-10 post-season tournament and would be two wins away from an automatic NCAA bid. They finished 19-8 and 11-2 in the A-10. They have two outstanding seniors and three very good freshmen, plus a strong bench. Congrats to Coach Anne and the gals!
  14. david, I agree with your last paragraph that the team looked good tonight, even considering it was opening night and against a good D2 school. When Quincy drained a couple of 3s I thought of the last SEMO game. While some on this board may want to annoint Luke after his results tonight.....an equal number, you know the type, would have certainly crucified Luke if he would not have played well. With this board, you just have to consider the source. JJ and Adam did a few half-court drills this week, plus all of the shooting drills. We need JJ back asap....if not in Texas next week, at least against Houston on Nov25. At this time, I like HD better than Obi. imo, Obi will begin to contribute when he makes a complete mental commitment to being a post-player and not a wing. btw, there was a need for sarcasm!
  15. the most meaningful way the Quincy head coach is looking at this contest is that it is a "buy game". I don't know the exact amount of money involved....but I would guess in the $30k range, maybe more. I heard or read (and maybe on this board) that some of the low majors were now asking for $60k+ to be a "buy game" and with that top school would have a negative SOS effect. In the SLU vs. Quicy, SLU gets a low cost buy game and, since Quincy is a D2 team, there is no negative SOS impact. (I'm guessing that D1 schools are limited to two exhibition games by the NCAA.)
  16. The player of the night was SLU frosh guard Katie Paganelli. She had 21 points in 26 minutes, was 7 for 9 total, including 3 for 4 from the 3-pt line, also was 4 for 4 from the free throw line. SLU's six freshmen played 136 of the 200 game minutes.
  17. Darren had 12 points at half-time......his shooting legs must have given out in the second half from playing tough 94' defense. Darren played 38 minutes.
  18. Hardball.... DB has all of the physical tools to be one of the best defenders on the team, if not THE best SLU defender. Why should we expect less of DB on the defensive end than we do TL, KL, DP, LM, etc. DB simply has to add a little more heart, a little more mental toughness, a little more smarts, and a little more respect for his teammates' defensive effort. When DB doesn't play good defense it is simply because he doesn't want to! What else would make him different than his teammates? What else? If SLU is going to maximize its potential in the 2006-7 season, SLU must become a consistently strong defensive team. To win on the road at Loyola, SIU-C, Houston, Pacific, and in the A-10, SLU must be strong defensively because on some nights your shooting percentage is going to be below average. I like our offense, particularly the consistency that IV, TL and KL bring....but don't bank on SLU outscoring every road opponent. St. Bonnie scored 95 points and lost. To give up 98 points means you played crap defensively. (btw, the Bonnies were only 22 for 41 from the FT line) I agree that a faster paced SLU offense will lead to a few bad shots and a few more turnovers. However, there is absolutely no relationship between the running game and one player unwilling to give an all-out effort on defense. Please NO EXCUSES for an excellent athlete like DB not playing good defense. It's Danny that has to change and not the coach.
  19. in the daily shooting drills for the perimeter players......the best shooters for the past three or so weeks have been KL and DM. They are both very consistent. Dustin just has to adjust to shooting in the big house (Savvis).
  20. thicks, when DP shoots his 3's with his left-hand and legs, and keep his right-hand off the ball.....that when he makes a higher percentage of his shots. When his right-hand gets on the right side of the ball it becomes a two-handed shot and generally a missed shot.
  21. Perhaps Powell does have an offer on the table....perhaps the kid wants to sign....perhaps a parent's signature is missing....perhaps someone else..... I think some posters have to give Coach Soderberg at least an once of common sense in dealing with a scholarship to a walk-on. Perhaps Wendell's scholarship is only for the first semester (still a great financial savings for his parents, perhaps a transfer will pick up that scholarship in January.....perhaps...
  22. slu72 said....."UB's recruiting is abysmal".... SLU has a player on each of the A-10's three pre-season teams: IV on the 1st team, TL on the 2nd team, and KL on the 3rd team. The 14 A-10 conference coaches pick the leagues top 15 players and three of them (20%) are from SLU. And slu72 says "UB's recruiting is abysmal". Simply clueless in Charleston!
